Doesn't look that heavy to me.

Guys with low body fat (body builders)can be very heavy. I remember pictures of former 5 time Pro-Bowl DE Mark Gastineau. He looked skinny at 270lbs. I still find it amazing Simon was rated so low in recruiting. For much of his recruiting he was rated a 3 star prospect? (Rivals)

Scout had him as a 5 star though. Rivals probably wasn't convinced that he would be big enough to be an elite defensive tackle.

if i'm not mistaken they also claimed he took plays off and they had questions about his "motor".

Agreed, that was the talk after his senior season...just prior to his senior season he was considered a 5 star if I recall correctly.

Either way I don't guess it matters since he's currently lightin' up chumps and we're all glad he's doing so for the good guys.

It really has nothing to do with john, but everything to do with rivals. They ignore the input of the good guys at osu rivals and just blatantly favor southern kids and toss out inexplicable rationales and rankings for the northern plodders.

They were a joke with mike adams, later doing a complete reversal after actual analysis of his dominance in san antonio.

They followed the exact same bobby burton script with simon a year later.

This year only one slow northerner was worthy of five stars from Rivals, and he was the worst ranked 5-star (aka 1 southerner emerges this summer and he's a 4-star as well).

I always considered Simon a 5 star DT in HS...Rivals flat out missed with him.
Fellow southern-biased outlet ESPNU also had Simon below 5-stars, but their scouting report started out by praising his motor.

Athlon Sports had Simon in their consensus top-50, despite the Rivals/ESPN rankings:

18 - OD
27 - Scout
30 - PrepStar
69 - Emfinger
N/A - Rivals & ESPN

the winter MoC came in he put up 410 on bench and if i'm not mistaken over 700+ on squat. 18 years old and was that strong it incredible. Anyways Simon is one of the leanest DT's I can remember. He almost looks like he's so light when you see him but you have to account for the muscle he carries.

Clarett was incredibly strong.
But back to Simon...............
I don't know how big he can get, but he'll probably need to put on a good bit of weight for the Pros. He's smallish as a DT right now but makes up for it with strength. Could he play DE in the Pros? Possibly.
I'm guessing before he leaves, Johnny will break Kudla's records in the WHAC.

Taking after his father, defensive tackle John Simon revels in being a 'workout freak'

Always in search of a new and challenging workout, sophomore John Simon recently was recognized by ESPN.com as being one of the top 10 "workout freaks" in college football.

Normally, a parent would be angered to hear someone refer to his or her kid as a freak.

But make it "workout freak," and John Simon III has no problem with the reference to John Simon IV, a defensive tackle at Ohio State.

"I take it as a compliment," his father said. "He works extremely hard, and he sacrifices a lot. Growing up, he would miss parties or doing something with other kids on occasion if he knew he had to get a workout in. That was always his priority."

It started when he was about 3 years old. His father, who is a salesman and - big surprise - a weight-lifting freak in Youngstown, would take him to the gym and sit him at a table with a toy to distract him. It didn't work.

"He'd see me and the guys working and say, 'Can I try this?'" his father said. "So, supervised, we'd let him do a chin up or a press, something small. It grew from there."
