LB John Simon - (2012 B1G DPOY, Super Bowl Champ)

So Johnny's what? 280-285? I'm not too worried myself. He's only a true sophmore. His muscle density is still growing with age along with the rest of his body. He'll be right around a natural 290-300 for the Pro's and possibly his Junior year even.

Defensive tackle John Simon: He flashed while forcing his way onto the field as a true freshman, and now in his first season as a starter, the sophomore and one of the strongest players on the team should prove he can be disruptive as three-down player.

"I expect the world out of him," senior defensive lineman Cameron Heyward said. "I saw him running extra this summer, I saw him lifting extra, just trying to get better. He had a great freshman year, so I always tell him you can't have that sophomore slump -- you might have that Cameron Heyward sophomore slump. So he's trying to get better than that."

Ohio State spotlight: John Simon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Cameron Heyward might be stealing the spotlight on the Ohio State defensive line with a spectacular play or two each week, but Eastern Michigan likely won't need a searchlight today to locate OSU's John Simon either.

Whether it's practice or a game, OSU running backs coach Dick Tressel said, Simon's tenacity always seems to propel him into the midst of the action.

"He's relentless. He's painful for us," Tressel said of those practice sessions. "All summer (in preseason camp), if my guys have headaches, it's usually from running into Simon or Cam.

"And throw (linebackers) Brian Rolle and Ross Homan in, too, because they're quick and they go, and they're relentless, and they're not going to stop. It's awesome."

Linebackers are expected to play that way, though. Simon, on the other hand, has given the Buckeyes a gap-jumping punch up front usually on the other end from Heyward that the offensive lines of Marshall, Miami and Ohio U. all had difficulty plugging.

He's been pushing the pile, so to speak. Though his numbers aren't alarming -- seven tackles, three of them for lost yardage he's made his presence felt by opening tackle lanes for Rolle, Homan and their ilk.

One way he's doing it is, like Heyward, Simon might line up over the guard on one play and outside the tackle on another.

"You can't have a scheme, like 'Let's take care of this guy with these two people because he's over there,' because he may not be there," Tressel said. "But I think that's secondary to the energy he brings to the defense."

Ohio State says sack the quarterback, and Buckeyes hope Simon will follow

Ohio State coaches are hoping sophomore John Simon, above, and the rest of the defensive line will have more success pressuring the quarterback when the Buckeyes open the Big Ten season against Illinois on Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? John Simon can't escape his weight room reputation.

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel told the story of walking up the steps of Simon's Youngstown home on a recruiting visit, entering the front door and "there's a weight room. Not a TV set or a couch. There's a weight room. So I love those home visits."

Asked about Simon's intensity about the game, OSU co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said: "We always say, 'How important is the game to you?' As you simplify your life, you can become really good at the things you do. When 30 things are important to you, it's a little harder to get good at those 30 things. John probably has three or four. I'm not saying what they are, but football is one of them, and the weight room is one of them, too."

Teammate Ross Homan, an OSU senior linebacker and captain?

"That dude is a total meatball," Homan said with a smile. "He'll be in that weight room, 24-7."

I like him at DE better than tackle. We will need him to have a big year in 2011! :oh:

I would love to have Cam inside against (presumably) Arky and slide Johnny outside. He has insane speed and strength for a young-man his size. If he catches a T or TE out of position at all he can go inside, outside or through the block. Him shooting through the gaps @ Iowa was a fine indication of this.

He's just too damn fast.
