LB Etienne Sabino (official thread)

I remember watching 'Bino commit on ESPN. Not many remember it, but he used the phrase "The University of... ... Ohio State" in his commitment long before TP did. (And in both cases it was obviously done to simply add drama.)

I don't follow recruiting nearly as much as many of the rest of you; but I remember that interview fairly well. I've been a big fan of his since, and I am really pulling for him. As with all Buckeyes, it would be great to see him reach his potential. The difference with 'Bino... it's hard to say where the top end of that potential is.

Sabino was a 5-star and one of the top LBs in the entire country in high school. As grad pointed out, his only problem has been fitting the system...his talent is top-notch. Reminds me a little of Mike D'Andrea a few years back in a way...phenomenal 5-star talent but could never grasp the OSU system (and also had some unfortunate injuries). If/when the light goes on for Sabino, look out...

Only difference is that I don't remember MDA ever being good on special teams as a froshy (?). I do agree with what others have said though. The kid is a true sophomore, everyone grows at their own pace............be patient.

Some need to relax, I guess we will see about Sabino but he will not start this year. Kline is now in the 2 deep at MLB FACT, So that leaves the SLB spot next year if he picks up the system!!!

The 2-deep can change daily through week one. FACT. Definitely agree that folks need to relax.

The 2 deep can change through the year; I guess we will see, I just did not see much out of Sabino at the LB position last year talk in the spring this year to make me think he should be a starter over one of the three that are being talked about. I hope he does turn it on and become the star LB everyone has him tagged to be.

Sabino to the Rescue
By Brandon Castel

As trainers rushed onto the field at Ohio Stadium Wednesday, Luke Fickell must have asked himself what he had done to anger the universe.

After three peaceful seasons of consistency under James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman, the Ohio State linebacker coach and co-defensive coordinator watched as his only returning starter, Ross Homan had to be helped off the practice field.

It has been that kind of fall camp for the Buckeyes, and it?s less than two weeks old.

Although Homan?s injury does not appear to be serious, it marked the third time this fall that Fickell and Heach Coach Jim Tressel have had to contemplate the loss of a starting linebacker.

?It's a little scary,? Fickell said. ?I think we have a lot of good football players, some young kids that are really going to be able to play, but time will tell.?

Just recently, the Buckeyes lost senior Austin Spitler to a calf injury that could sideline him for a portion of the preseason, but even that is nothing compared to the loss of junior Tyler Moeller, who was listed as the starter at the Sam linebacker position coming out of spring practice.

?Without Tyler here, that?s a great loss for our defense,? junior Brian Rolle said. ?A wonderful guy as well as a player.?

I don't even remember seeing Sabino during the game :so:

Did he actually get decent playing time and just not make many plays, or did Tress just not throw him out there that often? I think we needed his athleticism out there, especially with Spitler being more of a hit 'em lb and not a run around the field lb.

I am very excited about our defense this year. However, I feel as though we need to continue to try to get reps to developing players one being Sabino. He seems to be the forgotten man. Does anyone think he replaces Spitler next year?

Sabino would give them a force off the edge, but Klein & Sweat will push Sabino for that spot, not to mention any youngsters who mature like Bell, Whiting, etc. I'm not sure how healthy Moeller will be next year, but you can never count Taz out.

I'm as excited for Bino to play as anyone... maybe more. That being said, whose place would he take right now? The LB's are playing through the roof, which means Bino will likely have to keep working on his reps in clean-up time and contributing on special teams... Look for him to be 1st in line for Spitler's spot come spring.
