AKRON, Ohio -- Wednesday night was the night before the second straight football state title game for Dante Booker Jr. of St. Vincent-St. Mary.

It was the night when he had his final Irish practice of his high school career.

It was the night the Ohio State commit was riding to the gym for a little workout with his father when he looked up from his phone and said, "Dad, I just got Mr. Football."

“Stop lying,” his father, a former Auburn defensive lineman, said.

The look in his son’s eyes quickly told Dante Booker Sr. that his son wasn’t joking.

Dante Booker Jr. was named Ohio's Mr. Football for the 2013 season by the Associated Press on Wednesday night. He is the first Irish football player to earn the award, which is the state's top individual honor.

“I’ve seen the list of players that were up for the nominations and with him being a defensive player, they don’t get a lot of those type of accolades,” Booker Sr. said. “There are great players that he had the company of being in contention with.”

MASSILLON, Ohio – Beneath the lights at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, Ohio’s 2013 Mr. Football watched the ball bobble on the ground and picked it up.

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior linebacker and tight end Dante Booker Jr. had quite the past two days. On Wednesday, he was named the 27th Mr. Football in Ohio, the first in SVSM history.

On Thursday, his team lifted the state title trophy for the second straight year, also the first time in Irish history.

“It’s a great honor,” Booker said after the championship ceremony. “I received a second state championship. I’m going to watch Ohio State play and I’m sure they’re going to get the W too. It’s been a great weekend.”

With everyone focused on Raekwon, Mavety, Dixon, etc. with regards to recruiting right now it's easy to forget Booker. So pumped to have this guy in the class! Kind of reminds me of Jalin's recruitment - not very much buzz considering what an elite talent he is. I expect this guy to make a major impact on the position group and be another stud LB for the Silver Bullets. That's all that matters but I still wish he got more love.

First defensive player since the Big Kat

Forgot about Big Kat, thought it might have been even longer otherwise. Either way, it looks like Mr. Booker has put himself into the elite category of prospects with his play on the field this season (which was his only slight critique it seemed). I liked Berger to contribute early with his play but I think Booker might actually be the more likely early contributor with the injury to Berger and Booker's progress (and I mean in addition to McMillan, who I am confident lands in Columbus).

I don't think anyone is forgetting about Dante, but the 3 guys you mentioned are still just target and haven't committed, so they will be our focus until theyre Buckeye commits. Commits aren't focused on as much as targets, because we're always looking at who else we can get to make us better. No one is doubting our 2014 class is very very good. Dante is very good, and we're fortunate to have him in the fold. But guys like him, Curtis Samuel, jamarco jones, big Meech, Damon Webb, parris, etc are not forgotten in the least, IMO

I have seen in numerous places that Booker has been up to as much as 250 lbs his Jr. year. I think his current and ideal playing weight is around 230-235 lbs. All this talk about the next great OSU LB; by the time he is an everyday contributor, 2 years in an elite S&C program, with his frame, you are looking @ a 265 lb DE and V. Gholston clone.

He's nowhere close to 250 right now. He's been hovering around 210-215 for a good while now.
