LB Dante Booker (Official Thread)

I think many are calling him a future DE because he hasn't shown the LBer instincts that a guy like Trey Johnson or Kyle Berger display.

The kid's the #1 OLB in the entire country. His performance at The Opening showed some seriously good LB instincts...

Right, because 7 on 7 flag football is a better indicator of someone's ability to play the game of football than the actual game tape.

With regards to your mention of his ranking or whatever, see Morris, Shane. All the tools, still waiting on that on-field production. I think Booker's senior year will give us a better indication of how he'll project at OSU.

Yeah, he was rated as highly as he was--even before The Opening--because he had no LB instincts. :roll1:

He was rated ahead of your example Kyle Berger--based on review of actual game tape--even before The Opening and still is after it. A swing-and-a-miss...

Curtis Grant (#1 ranked Linebacker, 5-star recruit, etc.) was ranked above Ryan Shazier (#5 ranked Linebacker, 4-star recruit.) Curtis Grant is another example of a guy with insane athletic ability, not as much linebacker instinct. Whereas a guy like Ryan Shazier is a top player despite being undersized.

It's not at all unreasonable to think a move to DE could be in Booker's future, a la Jamal Marcus. If the staff decides to do that, you should let them know that his scout position rating doesn't agree with that move.

You're using Curtis Grant as an example now only after he has had difficulty adjusting to the college game...did you predict that--i.e., question his "LB instincts"--before he set foot on campus? I bet you didn't. Shazier isn't a top-notch LB because of his instincts, it's because he's an athletic freak. Yes, he has made the mental transition from high school to college-level football better and quicker than has Grant, but even Shazier said it was tough for him during his freshman season adjusting to the speed of the college game. If Shazier's "instincts" were so great, he'd probably have more than one career interception. Rather, Shazier film-studies his butt off and can read and diagnose plays well...that, coupled with his athletic skills, makes him such a killer LB.

Booker may come in and play lights-out from day one, or he can end up struggling throughtout his entire time at Ohio State...no one knows. But anyone right now who questions his "LB instincts" before he even is in his senior year in high school is simply grasping at straws.

The book is not yet closed on Curtis Grant, by the way. He could very well end up as an All American LB when all is said and done. There are far more kids who set the world on fire as juniors than as freshmen.

Booker may come in and dominate at LB as a freshman. He might slide down to DE. It might take him two years to pick things up, just like Grant. None of us know. It is pointless to argue about it.

I'm glad that Booker is a Buckeye.

^^Yep, this^^

Especially hoping the Curtis Grant All American possibility plays out. A NC could seriously hinge on that.

2013 high school football preview: Dante Booker Jr., Parris Campbell Jr. form a bond at St. V-M; set to continue it at Ohio State

The usual questions about football came and went, and Dante Booker Jr. and Parris Campbell Jr. answered honestly and with a straight face.

Questions such as who is faster and who is stronger.

“Parris is,” Booker said when the who is faster question arose. Campbell said: “I am” simultaneously.

Who is stronger? Campbell said: “Dante is.” Booker said “I am.”

OK.

What about who is funnier and a better dancer and singer?

Booker and Campbell, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School seniors and Ohio State recruits, smiled at each other and laughed.

The momentary pause was filled by Campbell.

“Outside of football, we can both be characters,” he said. “We both have our times where we crack some jokes. We can be two clowns. We like to have fun. That is everybody around here though. Everybody likes to clown around.”

St. V-M coach Dan Boarman laughed when the question was posed to him because he has been around the dynamic duo since they were freshmen.

“They are both real quiet leaders,” Boarman said. “Neither one is real loud. Just speaking to them, you can tell they are quiet. That is really their personality.

“I was joking at our senior meeting about how quiet of a class this is. Normally at our senior meeting prior to the season, you get a lot of guys speaking up and saying things. Not a lot was said by these seniors. I saw Booker after the meeting and said: ‘Book why didn’t you say anything?’ He said: ‘Coach, you know I don’t talk much. I speak with my actions.’ I said. ‘I have no problem with that, but you understand that when you do speak, people listen.’

“I think as he grows more and more he will understand that. He is not a big talker. He is one that does speak with his actions. He is a leader from the standpoint that when he does speak, people do listen to him. It’s the same with Parris. I am trying to get them to speak more.”

Booker, who is 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, makes his presence felt against Fighting Irish opponents by the way he plays linebacker. Campbell, who is 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, dazzles opponents as a running back.

Together, they helped St. V-M win the Division III state championship and post a 13-2 record last season.

Dante seemed faster and more aggressive last night. There were a few times he ran right past the play. He would lock in on the QB and miss the handoff to the RB. Not sure if it was excitement from it being the first game or the fact he was getting through the Garfield o-line so fast. The physical skills are definitely there. He just needs to get his mind to slow down some. Like Parris, he has taken his game up a notch this senior season.
