I hate to say it, but something really seems to be broken on this team. You rarely see senior players leaving the team in the middle of the season (and we're in week, 4; it's not the beginning of the season anymore). Gant hasn't gotten a ton of playing time up to this point in his career, so it seems strange to think that could be the motivation. They're running out of opportunities to fix whatever it is that's wrong, and they can't afford to let this malaise creep into the B1G season.......

I do think it’s notable that the one year we had a competent architect/play caller, the LBs looked a helluva lot better.

The overall system was in complete disarray in ‘18, ‘20, and this year. When the coordinator doesn’t really have a grasp on what’s going on, it’s hard to blame the LBs for also thinking too much and not just running and tackling.

This.

Calling the defense and the defenders knowing where to be in said called defense are one issue (coaching). You can have a little bit of inexperience lead to some busts in the early going but you have the right guy calling the defense and it will all take care of itself imo.

I would also add the game plan and preparation go hand in hand with scheme. If your scheme sucks, guess what, you most likely don't know how to build a game plan or prepare your team for what they are about to see. It is all inclusive, not to mention teaching technique and fundamentals. The defensive coaches are more than lacking on this staff.

Piss poor scheme, plus lack of preparation equals players that appear like they are slower and not good. Great scheme and preparation makes players look fast and great.

Yeah I'm pretty confused with what Al Washington is doing right now... you have EA playing 1 down and get a TFL, have a Chambers getting playing time and have a MLB playing 50+ snaps but getting zero tackles.

IMO the personnel packages are a big reason why something doesn't feel right with this team. All this depth at WR but we aren't playing it which is a position you can rotate. Then at a position where you shouldn't be rotating we have a revolving door.
