LB Dallas Gant (transfer to Toledo)

Ohio State commitment Dallas Gant talks recruiting and Buckeyes’ in-state efforts

After a rough junior season at Toledo St. John’s Jesuit, Dallas Gant and his Titans football team hit the field for the first time in the 2017 season for a scrimmage against Sylvania (Ohio) Southview High School on Friday night.

The unquestioned leader of his team and his defense, Gant didn’t play much — he didn’t have to — but looked every bit the part of an Ohio State commitment. The future Buckeyes linebacker took just about 15 reps total, including one play on offense, split out as a wide receiver, in the very controlled scrimmage. The Titans are entering their first season with new coach Larry McDaniel, who is taking over for long-time St. John’s coach Doug Pearson.

There’s a lot of new things for Gant to learn as he heads into his final high school season, and that’s one of the reasons he committed back in May.

Only a Freshman, LB Dallas Gant Has Been Mature Since Day One at OSU

Ohio State will have three freshman linebackers on the roster this season and expectations are high for each of them.

Teradja Mitchell, Dallas Gant, and K’Vaughan Pope were all blue-chip recruits last year. Mitchell was the No. 2 inside linebacker. Pope was the No. 9 inside linebacker. And Gant was the No. 10 outside linebacker. Needless to say, because of those hefty recruiting rankings, they are coming in with lofty expectations.

The immediate expectations, however, may be higher for Dallas Gant, who was the only one of the three to enroll early and experience spring and winter on the OSU campus.

Mitchell and Pope have since arrived at Ohio State and are partaking in summer workouts. But with Gant enrolling early, he will be ahead of the other two for a while.

The experience alone has given Gant an advantage, but if he wasn’t capable of making the most of his first six months on campus, then it wouldn’t have done him much good. Thankfully for the Buckeyes, Dallas Gant isn’t the kind of person who lets his opportunities go to waste.

“I think Dallas is such a mature young man,” linebackers coach Bill Davis said after spring football. “He really is mature. He’s very businesslike and he did everything, he went about it right. Now, he made the freshman mistakes that you’re going to make. But he’s such a mature young man and it means so much to him. He had a lot of growth and he’ll benefit from that down the road. We’ll benefit from that down the road.”

Ohio State rotated their linebackers this spring almost at a constant rate, though they were careful not to put too much on Gant’s plate. They kept him at outside linebacker this spring, wanting him to get his feet wet, but not wanting him in over his head.

The coaches liked what they saw.

“He’s a neat kid,” defensive coordinator Greg Schiano said. “Very mature. From the minute he stepped foot on our campus you could tell he was a little different than your average high school senior. And he works incredibly hard. He’s very focused, very smart. We just need to keep getting him better. He needs to get stronger. He needs to get into Mick’s summer program and continue to work with our linebacker coaches. He’s going to be a really fine player.”
