LB Curtis Grant (National Champion)

Don't ever see him starting over Spence, but anything's worth a shot I guess at this point. I hope he can make some sort of impact.

So the depth chart, IMO, is looking like this next year:

SDE - Bennett, Pittman / Moore
UT - Washington, Bosa, Sprinkle / Munger
NT - Schutt / Hale, Carter, Hill
LEO - Spence, Miller, Grant / Lewis

Extremely young, but extremely talented.

This is a bit off topic in Grant's thread, but I'd expect Hale to start over Schutt, if playing time in '12 is any indication.

He would never see the field behind Spence and Grant - if DE is Grant's best position, he is more than athletic enough to do it.

I do like the idea of Grant playing Leo. All our defensive ends seem to have a propensity to outgrow the position. So, having a linebacker grow into defensive end, sound good. And his experience as a linebacker should help his coverage skills. This could be the greatest idea since moving a tight end to tackle and since moving a fullback to linebacker. It might suit his temperment.

Hate to put an unrealistic goal on a player but when I think of one player who could impact the team the most in a NC run by totally breaking out Curtis would be high on the list. I'd have to say Braxton improving as a passer on offense and Curtis waking up on defense would both be huge. Really hoping the lighbulb comes in for Curtis in a big way. Talk about someone who could have used those 15 bowl practices.....would have been huge for him.

If the proverbial light bulb hasn't come on in 2 years in the program, I am not holding my breath on when it does. He has all the physical tools, but if he hasn't been able to get his head around to playing LB by now, I think he never will. Not trying to bash anybody, but that's how I feel. In any case, wasn't he rumored to be playing LEO next year?

Took Sabino some time as well. I'm sure Curtis is frustrated, but sometimes it just takes time and if he is willing to put in the time and effort I think that proverbial light bulb will come on at some point.

Sabino was a nice solid player as a 5th year senior. If that is what Grant ultimately ends up as, then that will have to suffice, but that would be a pretty large letdown from where expectations were. I'm still hoping for more than that...but concede that this hope may be unrealistic.

True it took Sabino til his 5th year to be a solid player.

I know Grant cam here with expectations through the roof. I hope he becomes that player someday, whether it is tomorrow or his senior year.

Everybody does not live up to expectations. Some people exceed them and some people don't. Depends on who is making the expectations and what those are.

I think things still look good for Curtis.

No first year linebacker last year took nearly as much grief for not starting as Curtis did for his first year.

And with recruiting classes averaging 20 a year, yes, the mathematical expectation is that they will play one year, their senior year.

nope. Katz was first team all American USA Today and I think he got defensive player of the year. Back then all we had was USA Today rankings ,Bill Kurelic and BSB.

Katzenmoyer was considered the number 1 recruit in the nation by at least one publication. It was so long ago I forget the magazine (I want to say Athlon), but I know he was on the cover of their recruiting issue. Those were the dark ages before internet recruiting services were popular. I am pretty sure it even pre date Kurelic (at least on O Zone which only goes back to 97).

Anyway, to the point. Katzenmoyer was really hyped considering the fact people didn't follow recruiting anywhere near the way they do now.
