LB Chris Spielman (2x All-American, 4x Pro Bowl, 3x All-Pro, CFB HOF)

Upon further thought, riddle me this.

If Spielman wins, how does this differ conceptually from what happens on Saturdays?

Well that's a big reason OSU didn't try to settle early I assume; they do not want to attempt to legally define 'likeness' in this situation. Slippery road that will have to be gone down.

On the radio they were talking about after this settles, what does this mean about all the #5 jerseys OSU has sold, full well knowing it was sold in likeness of Braxton Miller's, etc. etc. Ugh.

On the other hand...one member at Eleven Warriors posted something like this...so what about Chris benefits from having OSU tagged to his name now? Another word, he is saying Chris should not be referred to as former OSU LB to promote his own show or other event promotion as Chris would be financially benefited from the OSU label. That is like saying I should not have OSU in my resume. Some people totally missing the point.

It's blatant exploitation that would result in massive lawsuits in any other field.

The problem is that the solution has to be meager or it could destroy the entire thing. While a small number of kids in a free sports are exploited, they do get benefits. More importantly, other non revenue sports are full of more serious student athletes that would lose their funding if the compensation grows too large for the revenue athletes.

cool so all those kids who get scholarships on non revenue sports (mostly paid for by the revenue sports) should not get schollies?

We are talking about redistributing some more of the total revenue to the football players, no? No reason they couldn't continue to use some of the revenue to pay for scholarships for non-revenue sports. Those athletes just shouldn't get any more than a scholarship.

Not everyone has deep pockets and who decides this value ?

If they make it a small stipend everything can continue. If it's open season, it could kill college athletics. Wait till title ix gets involved.

And let's not forget that 95% of FBS schools can't afford to do anything. In Ohio, The Other State Universities combined for $168M in athletic subsidies last year. It averages about 10% of tuition at those schools. Fredo (OH)'s athletic budget was over 70% subsidies. I don't think it's good policy to ask Ohio students and taxpayers to shell out more so that foosball players can take even more money on top of their scholarships.

If it's done, frankly the NFL should pay for it since we're acting as their minor league. Either that or they can start a minor league and give kids a choice between a college scholarship or playing in Tulsa for 40K a year.

How many D1 schools are there ? 200?

200 x 85 schollies = 17,000 players.

Have the conference (or nfl) pay them 1-2k each, that's around a quarter million a year. Take it out of the 100-300 million per year tv revenue.

Was just going to cite title IX. What a mess. Don't even get me started on non-revenue sports... this is all such a mess.
