5. CHRIS SPIELMAN, 1987
After an incredible junior year, Chris Spielman returned to Columbus to solidify himself as one of the greatest linebackers in Buckeye history. His senior campaign was his best one yet, averaging over 14 tackles per game and adding 0.91 tackles for loss per game, the best mark of his career.
In 1987, Spielman was once again named a consensus All-American and won the Lombardi Trophy, given to the nation's top linebacker. He is currently third on the career tackles list at Ohio State and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and Ohio State's All-Century Team.
7. CHRIS SPIELMAN, 1986
After bursting onto the scene as a sophomore, Chris Spielman's junior season exceeded the hype. His 205 tackles are the second-highest single-season mark in program history. Additionally, Spielman was responsible for nearly 25% of his team's tackles, the highest share of any player in Ohio State history.
Spielman's junior campaign included his famous 29-tackle game, which tied Tom Cousineau's single-game record. The Canton native earned consensus All-American honors in 1986.
9. CHRIS SPIELMAN, 1985
The beginning of one of the greatest careers in program history, Chris Spielman's sophomore year was a sign of things to come. The second-year linebacker recorded 140 tackles and was responsible for nearly 18% of the team's total tackles, the 20th best-mark in program history.
Spielman's 1985 season was highlighted by the Buckeyes' upset over No.1 Iowa; the sophomore recorded 19 tackles in the rain and had a critical stop on fourth-down.
FOR OHIO: CHRIS SPIELMAN SELLS 1986 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP RING FOR $6,200 TO GO TOWARDS COVID-19 RELIEF
We're living in uncertain times during the COVID-19 outbreak, but Ohio is gonna get through it together – and have some fun along the way.
Chris Spielman continues to make a difference amidst this unprecedented crisis.
The All-American linebacker is on a quest to raise $40,000 to help those affected by the pandemic. He's already raised a sizable portion of that total, but he added another hefty chunk on Tuesday evening, selling his 1986 Big Ten Championship ring for $6,200.
Spielman's also auctioned off his 1984 Big Ten championship ring for $12,000, a game-worn Buffalo Bills jersey for $1,125 as well as his personal 1994 All-Madden Team leather jacket for $2,565, a Detriot Lions jersey and pants set packaged with his 1994 Pro Bowl watch for $2,500, and a game-worn signed Browns jersey and helmet for $1,525.
After all that, he's now just $2,000 shy of his total, and it hasn't even been a month.
There are many iconic Spielman plays that are omitted, including the huge stop vs Ronnie Harmon in the 85 Iowa game, but there are plays from that game included. There are also plays from a game involving TTUN's current head coach.
Chris Spielman to join Lions organization as Special Assistant to Chairman and President & CEO
The Detroit Lions announced today that Chris Spielman has joined the organization as Special Assistant to Chairman and President & CEO. In his new full-time role, Spielman will report directly to President & CEO Rod Wood and participate in interviews for the team's general manager and head coach search.
"Chris Spielman has been a tremendous ambassador for the Detroit Lions since the day he first put on a uniform as a rookie in 1988. He brings great passion for people and the game of football, and we are thrilled to have him on board to help lead our team. This position is a full-time opportunity for Chris that will allow him to work across various departments on both the football and business sides of our organization."
"This is an exciting day for the Lions organization. The Ford Family and I look forward to working with Chris and leaning on his knowledge and advice as we take the next steps as a team. His relationship with our team and our city will serve as a strong foundation for him in helping to fortify and sustain our organization's culture."
"I am humbled and excited about the opportunity to be involved with the franchise that is truly a part of me. The opportunity to work with Rod Wood and every single person in the Lions organization can't get here fast enough. To Lions fans everywhere, I will do everything in my power to help Mrs. Hamp and the Ford Family achieve their vision of something we can all be proud of."
Buckeye Heroes: Chris Spielman set the standard for Buckeyes on and off the field
What helped to set Spielman apart from other Ohio State linebackers was his intensity and determination. That is not to imply that other Ohio State linebackers do not play hard, either presently, or in the past, but when you watch video clips of Spielman playing at Ohio State, one could almost get the sense that Spielman was bound and determined to make every tackle. In a last-second, bitter home loss against the Michigan Wolverines in 1986, Spielman registered 29 tackles. Spielman would not be outworked, either on or off the field. There was no “off” switch for Chris Spielman.
He has the attitude that every employee of every organization should exhibit: I’m here to do whatever needs to be done, and to never complain or engage in self-promotion.
Just sayin': That is really great advice for all employees no matter who they work for.
