LB Chris Spielman (2x All-American, 4x Pro Bowl, 3x All-Pro, CFB HOF)

The OHSAA added five former great Ohio athletes to its Circle of Champions at the boys state basketball tournament Friday and Saturday. Those inducted were: Michael Redd, Earle Bruce, Rex Kern, Paul Warfield and Chris Spielman. Redd was an Ohio State basketball player and the other four played football for the Buckeyes. Spielman talked about what the honor meant to him, saying, ?Normally, I?m very uncomfortable being honored for doing the right thing or trying to do the right thing. I?ve never understood that. But the OHSAA is important to me. Growing up, my dad was a high school basketball official and a high school football coach. High school sports is a big part of who I am today.?

Former Massillon, Ohio State and NFL standout Chris Spielman hosted a youth football camp for kids ages 7 to 14 Monday at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. This was the first time the camp ? which is in its sixth year ? was hosted in Massillon.

MASSILLON ?

One of Chris Spielman?s first memories of his time in Massillon goes back not to a specific game, but of attending a football camp prior to his freshman year at Longfellow Junior High.

The camp was hosted by former Tiger great Steve Luke, and also included one of Luke?s Ohio State teammates, Archie Griffin.

?I remember on the old practice field where the parking lot is now,? Spielman recalled Monday morning. ?I have fond memories of that camp. I still have the T-shirt that says, ?Steve Luke Football Camp.? It was a white shirt with green letters.?

On Monday, it was Spielman who returned to Massillon to give back to the young football players, not just from Massillon, but all over the area. It was the first time Spielman?s camp ? which has been operated the last six years by ProCamps Inc. and was sponsored locally by AultCare ? has been held in the same stadium in which the former Tiger blossomed into a high school legend.

Spielman was as active on the fake grass of Paul Brown Tiger Stadium during Monday?s camp as he was during his playing days in the early 1980s. Clad in a red T-shirt and running around barefoot, he bounced from one group to the other, offering pointers to many of the 350 campers ages 7 to 14.

?I love the game,? said Spielman, who spent a little more than 10 minutes after the camp talking with Massillon?s players prior to the Tigers?

7-on-7 against Louisville. ?My passion for Massillon is the same as if I?m doing a camp in Dayton. I owe that; the game deserves that. The game has always been bigger than anybody or any place. The game deserves your full effort, and giving back as ex-players is important.?

In face of adversity, Spielman chose family over football

CHILLICOTHE — For years, Chris Spielman said he put his life on the gridiron above his life at home.

“A football player — that’s how I defined myself,” the former Ohio State and NFL linebacker said Monday at Chillicothe Middle School, where he was the keynote speaker for Adena Bone and Joint’s Head-to-Toe Expo.

“I didn’t define myself as a father, a husband, a person of faith,” he lamented. “I was a football player first. Everything else came second.”

But after his wife Stefanie was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in 2001, Spielman broke down. He recalled the moment when he parked his car behind a restaurant in Columbus, crawled into the back seat and curled up in the fetal position, screaming and sobbing and asking the proverbial question “Why me?”

Not long after that episode, Spielman discovered a letter he had written to himself in 1996 as a member of the Buffalo Bills. In the letter, every goal he set had to do with his loyalty to the team. So he rewrote the letter, replacing every reference to “the team” to “my family.”

Some minor news, but Spielman's team took home the crown yesterday in the 2014 Quicken Loans All Star Challenge, edging out the second place team by about half a second in the team competition. Spielman drafted David Fales of San Jose State, Louis Nix of Notre Dame, Marcus Roberson of Florida, C.J. Mosley of Alabama, and Anthony Fera of Texas. Roby was at the event and also participated, but not as part of Spielman's team. He came in 4th in the Hands competition. Louis Nix also took second in the Lineman Strength Challenge.
