MASSILLON ?
One of Chris Spielman?s first memories of his time in Massillon goes back not to a specific game, but of attending a football camp prior to his freshman year at Longfellow Junior High.
The camp was hosted by former Tiger great Steve Luke, and also included one of Luke?s Ohio State teammates, Archie Griffin.
?I remember on the old practice field where the parking lot is now,? Spielman recalled Monday morning. ?I have fond memories of that camp. I still have the T-shirt that says, ?Steve Luke Football Camp.? It was a white shirt with green letters.?
On Monday, it was Spielman who returned to Massillon to give back to the young football players, not just from Massillon, but all over the area. It was the first time Spielman?s camp ? which has been operated the last six years by ProCamps Inc. and was sponsored locally by AultCare ? has been held in the same stadium in which the former Tiger blossomed into a high school legend.
Spielman was as active on the fake grass of Paul Brown Tiger Stadium during Monday?s camp as he was during his playing days in the early 1980s. Clad in a red T-shirt and running around barefoot, he bounced from one group to the other, offering pointers to many of the 350 campers ages 7 to 14.
?I love the game,? said Spielman, who spent a little more than 10 minutes after the camp talking with Massillon?s players prior to the Tigers?
7-on-7 against Louisville. ?My passion for Massillon is the same as if I?m doing a camp in Dayton. I owe that; the game deserves that. The game has always been bigger than anybody or any place. The game deserves your full effort, and giving back as ex-players is important.?
