"I know this might sound canned, but it's true: My standard and expectation was always much more than the hype. I was always on a mission to play the perfect game." ? Chris Spielman
Neal C. Lauron | Dispatch

Life has thrown curveballs, high hard ones and change-ups at Chris Spielman in the past year, but he's kept swinging away.

From being notified he was named to the 2010 class of the College Football Hall of Fame, to losing his wife, Stefanie, to a long, public battle with breast cancer in November, to becoming a single parent of four, Spielman has endured. Today and Saturday, the former All-American and Lombardi Award-winning linebacker from Ohio State will take a few bows as part of the enshrinement ceremonies in South Bend, Ind.

As anyone who listens to his radio show with Bruce Hooley on WBNS radio knows, he's ever learning how to better raise his four children (Madison, 16; Noah, 14; Macy, 9; and Audrey, 8). At the same time, he will continue as a college game analyst for ESPN this fall. And he will indulge his joy of teaching football with his fourth annual camp for youths at Dublin Coffman from Monday through Wednesday, with a guest appearance by Ohio State coach Jim Tressel.

In the meantime, he took a few minutes for a few questions before heading to South Bend:

Brown, Spielman, Robinson inducted into College Football HOF

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Tim Brown struck the Heisman Trophy pose on stage at the urging of a fan after putting on his new College Football Hall of Fame blazer, then moments later, Steve McMichael playfully rushed past emcee Mark May like he was about to chase down a quarterback.

Both drew appreciative cheers from the crowd gathered for a rally to see the 24 former players and coaches who were being enshrined Saturday.

The biggest cheer, though, was for Chris Spielman, with nearly 100 people in the crowd wearing his No. 36 Ohio State shirt.

"This is how we do it at Ohio State," Spielman said to another loud cheer.

Tragedy brings Spielmans together on Enshrinement Day
but no one received a bigger ovation at Saturday's College Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement than former Ohio State standout Chris Spielman. Spielman's wife Stefanie passed away of cancer earlier this year. He shared a special moment with his four kids after receiving his blazer.

Chris Spielman live at College Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement

Tim Brown may be from Notre Dame, but no one received a bigger ovation at Saturday's College Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement in South Bend than former Ohio State standout Chris Spielman.

Buckeye nation was out in full force. More than 100 supporters were wearing matching Spielman jerseys with a special patch honoring Spielman's late wife Stefanie, who lost her 14-year battle with breast cancer in November.

"I know that when I told Steph about this originally when we got inducted, she was so happy for me," Spielman said Saturday night. "I can honestly say she was my high school sweetheart and I would not have had the success that I had as a player in high school, college or the NFL if it wasn't for her."

College football: Former Ohio State star Spielman gets full support

There were men in blue jackets standing on stage and young children running around in 'Future Hall of Famer' t-shirts, but no apparel stuck out quite as much as the scarlet and grey Ohio State jerseys of No. 36 Chris Spielman.

There were at least 110 fans wearing these jerseys, who stood together and cheered when Spielman's name was announced. Spielman's wife passed away just eight months ago after a 12-year battle with breast cancer, and the loyal O-H-I-O fans wore the limited edition jersey that has a patch on the left shoulder for Stefanie Spielman.

When Chris Spielman was first informed that a bus was going to bring fans to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, he tried to change their minds.

"I was saying that nobody's going to do that," Spielman said. "And, look what happened.

"It's humbling and not surprising, because Ohio State fans are pretty supportive of everybody."

On College Football Live today, Spiels talked about the '87 team and what happened with Cris Carter being declared ineligible due to accepting money from an agent.

At one point, Spiels said he was a broke college student, and he "used to go to all the non-football players' rooms and steal their peanut butter and jelly, so don't get mad at me at Park Hall".

"I think how a generation of Ohio State fans was brought up is that you had the non-conference part of the season, the Big Ten season and then Michigan," said former Buckeye linebacker Chris Spielman.

CHRIS SPIELMAN, OSU linebacker in the 1980s, ESPN game analyst, radio talk-show host.
?I?m waiting to hear a good argument for moving the game and I?ve yet to hear of one. It?s driving me crazy.?

?I?m all for expansion. I?m all for divisions. I don?t care if they?re in the same division or different division. But I think it?s vital that they keep it the last game of the year. If it moves to any other part of the year, it becomes less significant and it just becomes another game, because the next week?s game becomes more important. To me, it loses all its luster.?

On options if the Big Ten is adamant about moving the OSU-Michigan game from the final weekend
?If I were the Big Ten, I would start the season with a Big Ten rival ? ?Crossover rival? ? that Labor Day weekend. If you want to do a new thing, then go all out (and schedule OSU-Michigan for that weekend). Then it still can be that special game. Could you imagine that hype?
?I could imagine the first game of the year or the last game of the year. Anything other than that, I don?t know would happen (to the intensity of the rivalry).?

Growing Pains - Chris Spielman Interview
Story: Jason Ohlson | Intro: Kristen M. Foley & Johnny Davis

oct06.cover.jpg

When you read or hear about sports figures, the most prominent part of their initial introduction or bio normally is bursting with a plethora of facts, figures and dates. Sports heroes are normally more likely to be known for yards rushed, homeruns hit or baskets scored than they are for their other accomplishments. For the most part, one could say Chris Spielman is no different. A two-time All-American, three-time All-Big Ten selection, all-time leader in solo tackles and all-time leading tackler with over 546 to his name. That?s just a few facts and figures to get started. He also was the 29th pick in the 1988 NFL draft for the Detroit Lions where he earned Pro Bowl honors four times during his eight seasons there. He continued to build on those numbers during his two seasons with the Buffalo Bills and one season with the Cleveland Browns.

But these are not the only statistics or facts you should keep in mind when it comes to Chris Spielman. Four is the number of kids he proudly raises. Eight is the number of years since his wife Stefanie was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, and seven is the span of years since he last set foot on the field as a player due to a career-ending neck injury. These are the numbers that have undoubtedly affected Spielman more than any amount of tackles or yards he has accumulated in his lifetime.

Upon sitting down with Spielman, we wanted to put some meaning behind all of those numbers in addition to getting the break-down of his new reality show on ESPN ? Summer House, where six incoming freshman football players from diverse backgrounds are put in the same house to compete against each other in competitions aimed at determining the "Big Man on Campus,? all while having Spielman as their ?house dad.? Without question, Spielman?s story is one worth learning, and he?s a human being worth emulating.

SPIELMAN THE SAME

Life has gone on for Chris Spielman and his children. The former Massillon, Ohio State and NFL great is coming up on the one-year anniversary of his wife Stefanie?s death after a long battle with breast cancer. As part of that and breast cancer awareness month, The Repository will publish a pink paper Oct. 20.

I caught up with Spielman for a story in that edition. Look for it then.

But being a single parent hasn?t changed him. He still demands an honest day?s effort from his children and won?t allow them to make excuses.

?If my son brings home a report card with a B-minus on it and he?s looking at me like what?s wrong a B-minus? Well, you?re capable of so much more,? Spielman said. ?I know what my kids are capable of. There?s no excuses. A B-minus isn?t good enough.?

Spielman?s children ? from 8 to 17 ? are all in sports.

?I know parents give me the fish eye sometimes because I?ve seen it,? Spielman said. ?My 8-year-old (Audrey) is playing soccer and she?s playing a grade up. ... Look, I?m no soccer genius, but she?s on defense and I know when you?re on defense, you don?t kick the ball back to the middle of the field. So I yell out across the field, ?STOP KICKING THE BALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD WHEN YOU?RE ON DEFENSE!? I got the fish eye.

?The only thing I demand from them is a maximum effort and that they honor their mother in all that they do. If they don?t give a maximum effort, they?ll hear about it. It hasn?t been beyond me to bring any of my kids home from a sporting event and put them on the treadmill (because of a lack of effort). I?m not talking about the next day or next morning. Right after that game because it seems to me they still have a lot of energy to burn.

?They know the standard is high. It isn?t about scoring points or winning. It?s about something they control and that?s effort.?

That?s just a taste of what you can look forward to Oct. 20 from Spielman and his oldest daughter, Madison. Find out what happened when Spielman took her shopping for a homecoming dress a couple of weeks ago, too.

Really enjoyed Spielman's analysis of the game on Saturday. He breaks it down, especially defensively, shows who's supposed to aligned where along with responsibility, and does it with a style that reflects his love for the game. He shows his passion for the Bucks, yet still is willing to point areas that need to be improved. Too bad we can't have him do all of the games.
