LB Brian Rolle (Official Thread)

have you considered the possibility that rolle was named the starter at mike specifically to combat the triple option and will be back at will/sam next week?
Re-watching the game this morning and my untrained perspective believes that this is the case. He was in the middle of the field and could run down the play to either side and I thought he did a very good job of it. He was in on several of the wide plays because of his speed.

I would say many of those runs were a result of people not doing THEIR job and trying to anticipate.. LBs and DL alike!! the triple option was a nightmare!! That being said I genuinely believe Rolle will become the nightmare for opponents who run more traditional offenses.. He plays with malice in his heart and I love it!!

Most of those were the fault of the DL allowing holes being blown open. Neither of the TD runs up the middle from 15 or so yards out were touched by Rolle, so his size had nothing to do with them...but we'll be sure to pass on your analysis to Coach Tressel.

Honestly, if Brian Rolle wasn't playing yesterday I think we'd be sitting at 0-1 right now..He was all around the ball yesterday on every play..Can't wait to see what he does against usc next week.

I agree I beleive this defence will play better against a more traditional offense.

Rolle and Coleman should be the co-MVPs of that game. Each were outstanding on the defense.

We knew Coleman would bring the heat after starting a full year, being a senior, and also being a captain. But to see Rolle come alive and into his own on his first collegiate start was quite impressive.

Thinking back to recent greats in our LB Corps, here are Rolle's numbers in his first start compared to JL's first game in his first starting season:

Rolle (Navy) : 9 Tackles (3 solo), 1 INT (1 unofficial assist in a FF)
JL (2006, NIU): 4 Tackles (2 solo), 0 INT, 0 FF, 0 FR

- Note that JL did follow it up with an impressive performance against Texas, with 14 Tackles (11 Solo), and an INT.

What does the comparison mean? Not much if he doesn't follow up next week with another outstanding performance. But to come into the Shoe with lofty expectations on you to mature quickly and pick up where the departed Seniors left off, and to actually come through speaks volumes. Should he bring the wood against USC on Saturday, we need to start clearing some space for more trophies on the mantel.

:oh:

It may have been mentioned and if so it's worth noting again.. B Rolle looked like he was shot out of a cannon running that int back!! I mean he held his speed quite impressively!! Makes me wonder if part of spitlers issue wasnt conditioning? playing Navy your conditioning is going to be tested and it makes sense if Spit just didnt have his game legs?

It bears noting again. :) Rolle flat smoked Navy's QB Dobbs on the return, and that guy has some wheels. I can't remember an OSU linebacker that fast.

Two points:
- 99 yards at a dead sprint and didn't seem to slow down at all (until he crossed into the endzone)
- Still had enough energy to jog back over to the sideline after playing a full game against that offense

That's pretty darn impressive.
