Top pick will be inactive

By CLARENCE E. HILL JR.

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Cowboys chose Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter in the first round of the NFL Draft because they felt he was the most ready to play of all the potential prospects.
But when the season opens today against the Jaguars, Carpenter, the 18th selection of the draft, will not be in uniform.
Owner Jerry Jones said Saturday that Carpenter will be one of the team's eight inactive players, although the Cowboys won't make the list official until today.
Carpenter's absence can partly be attributed to his struggles at inside linebacker. Drafted to play outside linebacker, Carpenter was moved to the inside when former end Greg Ellis blossomed at outside linebacker. Carpenter now is behind free-agent signee Akin Ayodele, who played with the Jaguars last season.
Carpenter is not as good on special teams as undrafted free-agent linebacker Oliver Hoyte, another factor that contributed to Carpenter's status for today's game.
The Cowboys' improved depth might be another reason why Carpenter finds himself lost in the shuffle. Jones and coach Bill Parcells have said this is the most talented Cowboys team since Parcells took over as coach in 2003.
Kicker Mike Vanderjagt, one of the team's major off-season additions, did not make the trip. Vanderjagt struggled this preseason, and Parcells said he didn't want to use two roster spots for kickers. Shaun Suisham will handle the kicking duties today.

Carpenter hoping for debut
Cowboys' first-round draft pick Bobby Carpenter said he might make his debut against Washington.
"I would like to hope so," Carpenter said. "But you can never tell with Bill [Parcells]."
Carpenter was inactive for the season opener at Jacksonville. Parcells opted to use undrafted free-agent linebacker Oliver Hoyte on special teams.

Drafted 18th in the first round and not even dressing for the first game. I don't get it....
Bill likes to play his games. Bobby gets drafted, and mentions that his Dad coached him on how to deal with Bill's mind games. Bill reads said interview, and decides that he has to kick it up a notch, if he's really going to break Carpenter and make him a "Parcells Guy". It's all part of the brainwashing.

Parcells is a jagoff and always has been. His tactics don't work in todays NFL. He might get a team to the playoffs, but they won't go far. I can't wait for his impending clash with TO...it's gonna be marvelous.

What is there to get? he's obviously not doing well. You don't sit a 1st round pick to play "mind games." You sit first round picks because they either are injured or aren't ready to play in teh NFL yet.
I'm sure NFL rosters are riddled with players who took time getting used to the pro game.

Thank you for your opinion. I'll place it in my back yard right beside the 14 piles of dog shit.

I agree. this doesn't appear to have been a mind game. Calling Terry Glenn "she" was a mind game. Saying that you aren't going to play TO if he doesn't practice is another example. Actually making Carp inactive is probably just an indicator that he's still a bit green.

This likely has more to do with Carpenter's adjustment to inside linebacker, combined with the other kid having had an edge on special teams. Carp will get his playing time, but the transition to the inside position means it will likely take a while longer before he starts getting more meaningful snaps.

Why are they moving him inside anyways?

Too much depth outside or a lack of speed?
