Top pick will be inactive

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Cowboys chose Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter in the first round of the NFL Draft because they felt he was the most ready to play of all the potential prospects.
But when the season opens today against the Jaguars, Carpenter, the 18th selection of the draft, will not be in uniform.
Owner Jerry Jones said Saturday that Carpenter will be one of the team's eight inactive players, although the Cowboys won't make the list official until today.
Carpenter's absence can partly be attributed to his struggles at inside linebacker. Drafted to play outside linebacker, Carpenter was moved to the inside when former end Greg Ellis blossomed at outside linebacker. Carpenter now is behind free-agent signee Akin Ayodele, who played with the Jaguars last season.
Carpenter is not as good on special teams as undrafted free-agent linebacker Oliver Hoyte, another factor that contributed to Carpenter's status for today's game.
The Cowboys' improved depth might be another reason why Carpenter finds himself lost in the shuffle. Jones and coach Bill Parcells have said this is the most talented Cowboys team since Parcells took over as coach in 2003.
Kicker Mike Vanderjagt, one of the team's major off-season additions, did not make the trip. Vanderjagt struggled this preseason, and Parcells said he didn't want to use two roster spots for kickers. Shaun Suisham will handle the kicking duties today.
