LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

IMO this is a Parcell's hard-ass "I'll see how tuff I can make you by making your life miserable" escapade... I don't see amazing talent with the LBs he's using so far... so what other reasoning could he have

Have you seen Dallas play this season? Their defense is pretty damn good. Some people put too much into Parcells, no head coach in their right mind is going to put a guy on the inactive squad if they can contribute in one way, shape, or form. Especially if they were a 1st round draft pick, no coach (regardless of ego) is going to make a case study out of a guy that they have a lot of money invested in.

In the end if Parcells is playing a mind game and Carpenter becomes a Pro Bowler this will all be a moot point, then perhaps you could say that Parcells played mind games with him. They worked with Terry Glenn........so, who knows?

He's not playing mind games.

Doesn't bode well for Carpenter, how many other first round picks do you ever see being placed on the inactive list?

I agree........I just think that it's just the sad reality that Bobby hasn't adjusted well to the NFL.....or perhaps something mentally is going on stemming from his injury. Sometimes an injury can scar an athlete very badly.

Considering that Glenn set the rookie record for catches, your comparison is ludicrious.

Carpenter concerned about role: First-round pick Bobby Carpenter said he's disappointed with his role on the team. Coach Bill Parcells said the inside linebacker will dress for Sunday's game and play on special teams and the nickel defense.
It was news to Carpenter, who said he didn't think he was going to play. He was inactive for two of the first three games of the season.
"Yeah, that's something that's kind of bothered me a little bit, not knowing your role," he said. "I don't care what my role is. I'd like it to be clearly defined. I'm a big goal-oriented person, and if they want me doing things in practice, I'll do it. I'd like to do something I'm designated to do so I feel like I'm working toward something to achieve."
Parcells said Carpenter is still trying to grasp what's going on.

Football: Cowboys notebook: Parcells stresses patience with rookie

San Antonio Express-News

First-round draft pick Bobby Carpenter has been inactive in two of the Cowboys' first three games, but coach Bill Parcells said the former Ohio State linebacker will dress today and play on special teams and nickel defense.

"I know you're just waiting to say (he's a bust)," Parcells said. "But it's a little too early. I don't think you can really make a real assessment or judgment about players until they've been a couple of years in the league."

The Cowboys moved Carpenter from outside to inside linebacker in training camp.

"I came here to play," Carpenter said. "But we've got a lot of linebackers here, so I don't feel entitled to play."

Still, Carpenter said he wished he had a more defined role.

"That's something that's kind of bothered me a little bit," Carpenter said. "I don't care what my role is. I'd like it to be clearly defined."

Asked for his assessment of Carpenter, Parcells said, "I see a young player that needs to get a foothold on what's going on."

Let's not give up on Carpenter

By Newy Scruggs

Special to the Star-Telegram

I'd hate to be Bobby Carpenter these days. The Cowboys' first-round draft pick out of Ohio State is living through a tough first year.
Selected 18th overall, Carpenter was said to be a Bill Parcells-type player. He was a very good linebacker for the Buckeyes, and his dad played for the Tuna in the 1980s with the Giants.
So far, he can't get on the field. Carpenter has been inactive for three of the Cowboys' first five games, including last week against the lowly Houston Texans.
Let's not call him a bust... yet.
The Cowboys didn't know Greg Ellis would make such a smooth transition to outside linebacker. Remember that Ellis, a defensive end his entire career, demanded to be traded and went to Oxnard still wanting out of Parcells' 3-4 scheme.
Carpenter has also been blocked by second-year linebacker Kevin Burnett, who also endured a tough rookie season. Burnett has been a solid backup and gets plenty of time in the Cowboys' nickel package.
The rookie's journey from Columbus, Ohio, has gone like this: He went from playing the outside in the Buckeyes' 4-3 to the outside of the Cowboys' 3-4 to now the inside of the 3-4. That's a lot of changes, so I'll cut him some slack.
But first-round picks are supposed to play, period. The fact that Carpenter hasn't should raise some flags. If he gets to dress for the Giants' game Monday night, he might want to make some plays.
It shouldn't be lost on Carpenter that the Cowboys cut fullback Lousaka Polite and signed linebacker Junior Glymph.
In a recent conversation with the NFL's all-time leading rusher, Emmitt Smith, he expressed frustration with the Cowboys the past few years and told me at some point they should spend a first-rounder on an offensive lineman. Left tackle Flozell Adams is 31 years old. Guard Marco Rivera is 34. Starting center Andre Gurode is a free agent at the end of the season.
The Cowboys haven't drafted an offensive player in the first round since tight end David LaFleur in 1997, and before him, wide receiver Alvin Harper in 1991. Tackle Howard Richards (1981) was the last offensive lineman taken by Dallas in the first round.
Final thought
The Cowboys host the Giants on Monday Night Football. They are 3 1/2 -point favorites. This is a game that good teams with playoff aspirations must win.
After Monday, the Cowboys are on the road against Carolina, Washington and Arizona. After that, the Cowboys host the Colts and then Tampa Bay on Thanksgiving.
