Let's not give up on Carpenter

I'd hate to be Bobby Carpenter these days. The Cowboys' first-round draft pick out of Ohio State is living through a tough first year.
Selected 18th overall, Carpenter was said to be a Bill Parcells-type player. He was a very good linebacker for the Buckeyes, and his dad played for the Tuna in the 1980s with the Giants.
So far, he can't get on the field. Carpenter has been inactive for three of the Cowboys' first five games, including last week against the lowly Houston Texans.
Let's not call him a bust... yet.
The Cowboys didn't know Greg Ellis would make such a smooth transition to outside linebacker. Remember that Ellis, a defensive end his entire career, demanded to be traded and went to Oxnard still wanting out of Parcells' 3-4 scheme.
Carpenter has also been blocked by second-year linebacker Kevin Burnett, who also endured a tough rookie season. Burnett has been a solid backup and gets plenty of time in the Cowboys' nickel package.
The rookie's journey from Columbus, Ohio, has gone like this: He went from playing the outside in the Buckeyes' 4-3 to the outside of the Cowboys' 3-4 to now the inside of the 3-4. That's a lot of changes, so I'll cut him some slack.
But first-round picks are supposed to play, period. The fact that Carpenter hasn't should raise some flags. If he gets to dress for the Giants' game Monday night, he might want to make some plays.
It shouldn't be lost on Carpenter that the Cowboys cut fullback Lousaka Polite and signed linebacker Junior Glymph.
In a recent conversation with the NFL's all-time leading rusher, Emmitt Smith, he expressed frustration with the Cowboys the past few years and told me at some point they should spend a first-rounder on an offensive lineman. Left tackle Flozell Adams is 31 years old. Guard Marco Rivera is 34. Starting center Andre Gurode is a free agent at the end of the season.
The Cowboys haven't drafted an offensive player in the first round since tight end David LaFleur in 1997, and before him, wide receiver Alvin Harper in 1991. Tackle Howard Richards (1981) was the last offensive lineman taken by Dallas in the first round.
Final thought
The Cowboys host the Giants on Monday Night Football. They are 3 1/2 -point favorites. This is a game that good teams with playoff aspirations must win.
After Monday, the Cowboys are on the road against Carolina, Washington and Arizona. After that, the Cowboys host the Colts and then Tampa Bay on Thanksgiving.
