LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

I will defer to anyone knowing for sure... but I'll speculate in the meantime...

The fibula is almost non weight bearing... so if it's 'broken' but not disconnected between the two pieces... you might not even know... the final break would most likely have come from a twist (not too far distant from spraining his ankle).. which would put just enuf strain (via the tendons/ligaments) on the broken fibula to finally snap/separate...

If the fibula was broken but still together, he could play since it only upholds a small pct of the weight... and the tibia would have been carrying everything... he would have felt a definite discomfort and even some weakness but he could still play...

I'm a little confused whether you are referring to the tibia or fibula? I thought it was the fibula that was broken?

I corrected my post... you are correct... I had the two switched... the tibia is the weight bearing shin bone... the fibula is the skinny stablizer next to it... my bad .. one would assume I'd know.. since I broke my fibula too...

The most likely bowls for the Buckeyes are the Capital One and Fiesta on Jan. 2, or the Orange on Jan. 3.
"I would say we that we won’t know (Carpenter’s availability) until we’re probably out at the bowl site," Tressel said. "The later we play, the better. So I’m hoping we play like around the third, that would give us the best chance."
The 3rd sounds good to me too :wink2: It sure would be great to see Bobby play one more game in S&G, but we may just have to wait until Sunday...

No problem at all. All I know is that the fibula was the bone behind the tibia. I really had no idea the primary function of both, so I wanted to make sure each were being represented correctly. Interesting info btw.

Bobby broke that same fibula twice in high school; he's dealt with this injury for five or six years now. They'll just put in a longer plate than the one that's in there already.

I know he broke the other leg in high school once, my best friends younger brother is the one who did it. he was a cornerback for Newark High, the kid was small, but man could he hit. If Bobby did break that same leg twice, now for the third time, that would make four broken legs. WOW. He is a monster. If he somehow slides to the 2nd round of the draft, it may very well end up being the steal of the draft.

Bobby is one of our greatest and most versatile athletes in Buckeye history. He can play all 3 LB positions and rush DE, he plays with emotion and aggression, and he gives everything he has on every play. A true native Central Ohio Buckeye.

He broke his fibula, near the ankle joint. Of bones to break, this is the best to break near the ankle. If surgically repaired with plate and screws (a la T.O.), he could potentially return in the 6 week range. The real question is not the bone, but rather the ankle ligaments. If the low ankle ligaments were only torn, his return would not be delayed....if the high ankle ligaments were torn in addition to the fibula fracture, it's doubtful that he'll be back for the Bowl.

My bet is that JT keeps it all under wraps, makes our opponent prepare for Bobby at rush DE, and we find out just before the game.

Either way, BC is a Buckeye great and will always be remembered as such!

Go Bucks!

I would really like to see this trio finish the season together and I am especially hopeful that Carpenter can play, after what happened at TSUN. However, if playing is a risk to his pro career, especially after all of the previous breaks, then I hope he stays out and thinks of himself and his career.

Carps has given us all a lot. I just hope he keeps some for him. :osu:

Carpenter Able to Play For Bowl Game or Not?

Does anyone think that Bobby Carpenter will heal quick enough to play in the bowl game? I don't know how long it takes for his injury to heal up, but I sure hope he does!

If the bone heals and the doctors clear him I don't think JT with be able to keep Carp off the field. I doubt Carp wants his last Buckeye memory to be getting he leg broken in the scum game. This is the same guy who changed jerseys at halftime of the spring game last year to try to sneak back onto the field after JT told him his day was over. If he gets cleared I would like to see him get in a little in the bowl game. Maybe just use him as a rush end in nickle.
