LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

This is the biggest joke of an award I have ever seen. It was obvious he was the best lb in the country. His stats cleary showed it, and he has been a stud for 4 years. You are the best lb in the country in our eyes AJ and that is all that matters.

As for Poz congratulations.

I just don't get these awards, they make absolutely no sense. Who the heck does the voting.

Congrats to Poz, but I find it interesting that the Big 10 coaches and media, who have obviously seen more of these 2 than any other group in the country, voted AJ Defensive POY in the conference. Poz is a stud, but playing inside in PSU defensive scheme he should have more tackles than AJ, and the fact that their totals are as close as they are I think is actually a credit AJ, not to mention that he played the season beside Anthony and Bobby who ate up a lot of tackles. Combine that with the fact that AJ is MUCH better in space and in the passing game, and I think the national voters were a little short sighted in their voting.

Having said all that, I think that AJ may have actually been hurt a bit in the "National Perception" area by how well Anthony played in the Michigan game. While he was steady all year, Anthony was the best player on the field for the defense that day IMO, and voters who hadn't followed the whole season may have been swayed to move to Poz, I don't know. It doesn't seem to matter how well you play early in the year (Texas), the last few weeks are all that seem to count (just ask Vince Young).

Good post VOR.

IMO, A.J. was hurt by being the most recognizable face on a defense full of recognizable names. On the other hand, Poz was the poster boy of that no-name defense. Whenever folks talked about tOSU's defense, they named a number of serious players...PSU was Poz and the gang.

That perception hurt the vote imho.

Is it just me or does this sting just as bad as us losing a game. I know AJ is probably shrugging his shoulders and saying congratulations to Poz, and not worrying about it, b/c that is the type of class act he is, but I feel like we just lost a game or something.

This was a no-brainer to me. It would of been like Young winning the heisman over Bush.

Well if that is the perception, then these people need to not vote on perception, but actually watch a damn game and look at some stats. I don't know how you can vote for an award on perception.

I think if there is anyone that would know best, it would be the coaches in the Big Ten who voted AJ the best defensive player in the big ten, and they saw him play all year and had to coach against him.

Not to me...

For me, an award only has relevance if you respect the opinion of the person or group giving the award; because that's all it is: an opinion.

As soon as they gave the award to someone other than #36 back in 1987, I lost all respect for the Orlando Downtown Athletic Club and by extension the Butkus Award. I wasn't even upset at the time because their loss of credibility was so instantaneous in my eyes. For them to do the same thing now is just further proof that the award has no value whatever.

Let me break this down into three questions:
  1. If Martha Stewart were to give an award for the best Defensive Tackle (or whatever) in college football, would anyone care if a Buckeye won it or not?
  2. Based on their past selections, does the Orlando Downtown Athletic Club know more about college football than Martha Stewart?
  3. Then why does anyone care what they think?

Poz had 111 tackles, 60 solo, 11 TFL, 3 sacks, 0 FF, 0 FR, 0 Int, 0 TD

Hawk had 109 tackles, 60 solo, 13 TFL, 7.5 sacks, 2 FF, 1 FR, 1 INT, 1 TD

I don't get it. Hawk has over twice as many sacks, has 2 forced fumbles whereas Poz has none, and Hawk shows his all-around ability by the fact that he's scored a TD, recovered a fumble and picked off a pass. Poz had 2 more assisted tackes. This is absolutely ridiculous. I'd like to ask those who voted for Poz on what basis they did so. It sickens me to say it, but this (much like JoePa getting coach of the year award) is just another instance of the media loving PSU and being PC by giving them all the awards simply b/c everyone had written JoePa off as being too old to coach. Ridiculous.

Yes I agree on the Martha thing, but...

If Emeril gave out an award for say the biggest hit of the year I would respect it. Hell he could call it the BAM! Award and that would make it even better.

I understand your points, but this award is recognized by many as a huge award. Now Poz gets all this recognition, that he shouldnt even be getting. I seriously cannot stand all this media recognition for PSU when all they did was return from the cellar in the big ten. They have one good team every 10 years and they get all this recognition. Give me a break.

LOL  Logic with a bit of humor. I love it. Although, I must say that Martha may have more college football knowledge than we think. Remember, she spent a few months behind bars. She HAD to have run into some Miami (FL) players and/or prospects in there!!!

Some of you need to chill...I don't think there's any PC in football, and this kind of thing happens every year to someone with some award. I agree with grad, and I would add that Poz played one of his better games against OSU, but Hawk didn't against PSU in the opinion of many who watched that game...and it may have been the only game that voters saw both play...who knows?

Poz is a great player, with a lot of heart and grittiness. Hawk is better, plain and simple, in my eyes, but he didn't win this particular award...no biggie. He has plenty of hardware...oh yeah, and a ring...which a lot of other guys don't have. I'm sure he wouldn't trade that for 4 Butkus awards.
