The Silver Linings Playbook on Netflix. One of the better films I've seen this year.
I'm not sure it was quite Best Picture material but it wasn't a terrible nomination in my IMO. Having not read the press clippings, I was shocked at how good of a movie it was. I expected a witty, edgy romantic comedy but instead found a lot of layers and depth along with the dark laughter. It was a very unexpected, poignant portrayal and commentary on mental health issues. The complexity and similarities of mental health issues, the lack of understanding about those issues (professionally and socially), the severe stigma, the struggle of treating them, the way medication is overused and often makes it much worse, the coping mechanisms, the heriditary nature of many of them, etc.

It was very dark but also quite funny at times. Both actors turned in great performances, particularly Lawrence. De Niro was his usual great self as a struggling OCD father. Those portraying it as a chic flick missed quite a bit of substance.
Agree I was very suprised on how good the movie was. I too saw it for the first time just two weeks ago.

Sounds like I need to bump it up my list.

Pixles and Vacation both sucked

I still love the original. Harold Ramis directing a John Hughes script? So much genius.

I shudder to think how about the Ghostbusters remake is going to be.

The Double (2014) - 84% RT (yes, I finally watched the right one )

Dark, twisted, hilarious. Stellar directing and even better chemistry between the two unusual leads (Eisenberg). A creative and unusual thriller and a welcome change in an industry dominated by retreads.

I really don't want to post the trailer because it gives away too many great scenes.
quality synopses from RT said:
The film's bleakness is almost satirical. It's Brazil drained of the daydreams.
Its clever moments outweigh its contrived ones, twisting into an atmospheric package that's both subtle and haunting.

Anything compared to Terry Gilliam's work piques my interest.

Edit: Did some googling. It's based on Dostoyevsky's novel. That alone makes it worth looking at. I's also directed by Richard Ayoade (of The IT Crowd fame)...yeah I'll be watching this one.

Watching Love and Mercy.

I'm gonna be biased. It just is. My first true musical love was the Beach Boys. I'm not talking Surfin' USA, but the B sides where he was allowed more latitude and didn't have to follow the 'formula'...

I love Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Pet Sounds is the Mona Lisa of American Rock in my imo and so far its looking like this movie is about the making of that album (at least the flashback parts). The music he could have made if he wasn't pushed into a box by those around him. Its hard to feel sad for successful people, but Brian Wilson was a true tortured unstable genius.

I remember when Brian Wilson finally came out of seclusion and debuted Love and Mercy in the late 90s early 2000's. I knew his story. Full orchestra backing. Great song for someone who had been fed anti-psychotics and who knows what for 25 years. It seriously pisses me off how the leeches and hangers on took advantage of his fucked up head and his money. His own family of mostly mediocre talent. His Kokomo ginger leech cousin. His father selling out his publishing rights. Criminal fucking behavior.

So I'm gonna start a band and play Pet Sounds front to back live. Only gonna need me and about 30 of my closest friends. LOL. I swear there are people playing shoelaces and toothbrushes on this album. Someone is gonna have to play that baddass spatula solo too...

The Gift: now I will admit, a combination of Jason Bateman and a mainstream (Universal) release had me going in with low expectations...but what a terrific little thriller this is. Good acting, good directing, good creepiness factor. Also a huge bonus is that, for once, the ending didn't suck...in fact it was good. Solid 4/5
