I just finished watching Suicide Theory. I would be a good movie if it didn't have so much bad philosophy 101 banter about nothing in it. Maybe worth a watch? It is good to watch while posting here and pick your head up for the good parts.

I am now watching the Hunt for Red October. The most rewatchable movie of all time. It's okay.

>Maze Runnner: Scorch Trails

SO much better than the first Maze Runner. Had decent humor, good action scenes, and a few nice twists. Not a must see by any standards but if you saw the first one like I did and were semi-curious by the story but thought the first movie was shit, then I think you'll be pleasantly suprised by this installment.

Sets up for a third movie that will probably be lame.

The Visit.

Likely the worst movie I've ever seen. Truly horrible.

I had free tickets for an advance screening of this movie, but decided not to go. Now I comfortable believing I'm glad I didn't.

BTW, does anyone else get these? I forget how I got signed up for these screenings, but I get maybe a dozen a year. The one that was the biggest deal was Lincoln. I saw Avengers this way too but there weren't studio employees there.

Actually, cool story bro time: for these things they search you to make sure you don't have a camera or anything else to reveal the movie. So my girl had made a ton of popcorn at home the way she likes it (she's crazy organic, etc.), and we were worried about the search. Well the lady searching just laughed and said, "we don't care about that stuff" when she saw the popcorn. She wasn't a theater employee though.

Edit: If anyone wants to sign up for this the company that gives the advance screenings is 43Kix Columbus. I think you are more likely to get the tickets the more you accept them. The theaters are always Easton or Lennox.

The Visit.

Likely the worst movie I've ever seen. Truly horrible.

I actually didn't think it was that terrible....than again, I went in with expectations of what was to come from a M. Night movie. Slow, methodical build up with some light humor mixed in...minimal jumps and then his usual curveball at the end. That's really the only point of going is the curve, which he does well at least. He has original ideas which is rare and funded the film completely himself. I'm at least hopeful to see what he has next and he should get some opportunities after this one, 5M budget and at least 60M global already so he's cleaning up. But I do agree that there were several annoying things about the movie, i.e. the kids. The whole 'father leaving' backstory was unnecessary as well. Odd casting choices but the old folks really nailed it.

Hoping to see Black Mass this weekend but 100% going to see Sicario....that looks like must see to me. Brolin, Del Toro, Blunt, Bernthal....too much talent not to be good.

Knocked off a couple of horror flicks this weekend:

Midnight Meat Train: Like Lovecraft, Barker’s short stories seem to have difficulty translating to the screen. This was one of the better ones, though it falls well short of straight movies like Hellraiser. Kudos for the use of Brook Shields…one of the few times you will see someone like her used correctly, good minor role, brings some star power, but stays out of the way of the rest of it. Like many of Barker’s stories, it was a bit too fantasyish for me, but they did a good job with pacing and casting. 3.5/5

Feast: Yes, I am way late to the party on this one, it was a phenomenon in 2005, a sort of small budget project around the time of the After Dark Horror Fests and the like were beginning, sort of a pushback against crappy mainstream American movies of the genre. It was OK, nothing special, though Henry Rollins as a (bad) motivational speaker was worth the rental right there. 2.5/5

I really liked The Visit, with the exception of every time that kid opened his mouth to rap. That was God awful.

Black Mass was phenomenal. Depp is a hell of an actor when he's not a drunk pirate. I didn't know much about the Bulger story so it was really interesting from the get go.

Vacation. Obviously not as good as the original, but it had some funny moments. Great to see the Family Truckster make an appearance.

MI: Rogue Nation. Thought it was a solid action film. I've liked all the Mission Impossibles.

The Silver Linings Playbook on Netflix. One of the better films I've seen this year.
Has anyone seen that Silver Linings movie? How the freak did that get a Best Picture nomination???? Was it that good?
I'm not sure it was quite Best Picture material but it wasn't a terrible nomination in my IMO. Having not read the press clippings, I was shocked at how good of a movie it was. I expected a witty, edgy romantic comedy but instead found a lot of layers and depth along with the dark laughter. It was a very unexpected, poignant portrayal and commentary on mental health issues. The complexity and similarities of mental health issues, the lack of understanding about those issues (professionally and socially), the severe stigma, the struggle of treating them, the way medication is overused and often makes it much worse, the coping mechanisms, the heriditary nature of many of them, etc.

It was very dark but also quite funny at times. Both actors turned in great performances, particularly Lawrence. De Niro was his usual great self as a struggling OCD father. Those portraying it as a chic flick missed quite a bit of substance.

The Double on Netflix (2011, w/ Gere/Grace)

So I accidentally watched this after a too-quick google turned up 82% for the wrong movie. "The Double" (2014) with Eisenberg received 82% and that movie looks great. I'll have to pick that one up soon.

The critics absolutely hated this one:
Rotten Tomatoes said:
Like a stripper who gets naked too quickly, the lukewarm spy thriller "The Double" lays out its big plot twist early in the movie - and soon finds, shivering, that it has nowhere else to go.
Possibly fair, but I found it to be a decent watch for a lazy weekend day. It's not something anyone should spend money to watch, but if your netflix queue is stale and you don't have any good options for streaming (like Silver Linings), this one is decent. I still think Topher Grace should be getting some sort of work, but Richard Gere's role was pretty weak.

So I've been viewing the top-100 movies on Rotten Tomatoes, and I've found some really strong candidates for library reservations.

Then I pulled up the 2013 top-100 list. Gravity is #1? Are you kidding me? Even sadder is the disappearance of the critic echoing my thoughts that he was strongly rooting for space to win after enduring Sandra's whining.
