Large Terrorist attack in Paris

Yet with time, patience and the stomach to see it through, the feds have made the Mafia almost into an underground association now.

It's not going to be fast. It's going to probably take decades. But if we don't bother to try, more attacks are coming.

The Mafia was cut off by state Attorney Generals, DEA, FBI, and the IRS. ISIS won't be so easy. The problem is the religious ideology that breeds it. Kill ISIS, and something even worse will just sprout in its place behind it. Boots on the ground will solve the imminent threat. But the region is 5,000 years of festering holy war and would only breed something new we can't comprehend yet.

Not saying war is a bad option - I think it's now inevitable, - rather just resigned myself to the idea this is probably unwinnable in the sense there will never be a conclusion. Maybe Trump can build a wall around them and pen them in?

Honestly, I don't think there's anything "the West" can do that will really matter or get ISIS/AQ/etc. to stop and disappear.
  1. Stop propping these shitbags up to fight our proxy wars.. AQ vs Russia & ISIS vs Assad - both worked out well.
  2. Get out of Saudi Arabia.
  3. Stop dropping bombs on country's we haven't declared war with.
  4. Stop sending billions of dollars to Israel and her enemies. (If I were President, I would end all foreign aid. Don't get me wrong - let's help when help is needed and continue to be the most generous country in the world - but lets cut the horseshit.. we broke.)
You seem like you are justifying their attack. Why?
I don't want to speak for anyone else - but - I do think it's important to understand why planes smashed into towers back in 2001. I hope the "they hate us because we're free" rhetoric has gone away - but I'm pretty tuned out without TV. Not passing judgment on anyone here or their opinions, but, we ought to look at the root cause of things. I guess I would start with France and Britain re-drawing the Ottoman Empire after the first World War (or half-time of the only World War depending on your flavor).

Does that mean I am justifying their attack? Fuck no - just means I'd like history to stop repeating.

What's the point of having a border today if you don't secure it like your life depends on it? Because, as we can see, it does.
I think it's beyond ridiculous that we have things like the Patriot Act, the NSA and the NDAA - yet our borders are wide open.

In all honesty - when stuff like this continues to happen - at what point does collateral damage become acceptable to rid the world of this shit?

I watched our president last night describe what happened in Paris as a crime - and this is the problem with our leader. He does not recognize that this was an act of war in the midst of a war that has been going on for decades. The enemy has morphed into many forms with different names over those decades, but they have a consistent ideology and remain determined to cut all of our heads off. But our effete leader - who has a worldview that he espouses for millions of other misguided souls - feels better if he denies the reality of war by declaring it a criminal matter. In that way, he is able to use a police approach as a response rather than a war response. This is why I have felt for many years that this worldview is going to eventually get us all killed. A significant part of the world population is trying to kill us all, but we want to fight them with the local police department. Nothing against the police, but that's not what they are equipped to do.

No sane person wants to fight a war, but dammit, when people are determined to cut every head off in the western world, you have to resist that with everything you have. The reality is that there is no negotiating or diplomacy with people who want to behead you. Think about how you would start that - "Uh, I understand you want my head, but would you consider an arm or a leg?" And when the enemy believes their god wants them to kill you, and they will get heaven, 72 virgins, and all that, I would put them in the category of "unpersuadable".

Someone questioned whether all of our killing of them has done any good. Sure it has. Bush tried to fight a half-measure war in Iraq for several years, but it failed, so he implemented the Surge Strategy, and in about a year Iraq was stable and relatively peaceful. My son was there from March through December of 2008. He was emailing throughout the spring and summer about the fighting they were doing every day. Around October he started saying he was bored because no one was shooting at them anymore. I asked him why, and he said, "I think we killed most of them, and the ones we didn't have decided to go home to mama before we do." You don't have to kill all of them, you just have to kill enough of them that the mamas refuse to lose any more sons. But clearly, our president does not see this problem in realistic terms, and/or does not have the balls to do what has to be done.

The eternal lesson of the American revolutionary war was that a centralized military cannot defeat a radically decentralized resistance. Obama understands that.
Maybe. So what? The British probably would have much preferred not to fight that war. Sometimes the enemy is at war with you, whether you like it not. It's hard to imagine someone wanting to fight less than Obama has already. And like Al Quaeda before them, ISIS isn't seeking Independence. Their revolution is to bring about the end of days. Death cults man.

That shit doesn't matter to them anymore. Might it help lower their recruitment numbers and lessen the propaganda seen as "true" by the people they recruit? Yeah, it probably would. However, they've moved well past only wanting "the West" out of the region, they just want us destroyed or to at least constantly terrorize and kill via attacks like this. Look at how they're recruiting and who they're appealing to. This isn't just about their region anymore.

Am I getting closer to saying "Fuck you, we're out. Go ahead and wipe yourselves off of the map you stone age fuckwits." Yep. Do I think it would really do a damn thing? Nope.

What some of you need to go do is buy a ticket to some Muslim country. Get your passport, go live there for 6 months minimum.

I hate to say this but there are a lot of opinions in this thread. But not a lot of truly educated opinions. Americans cannot relate whatsoever to people in the middle east and their problems. There is that much of a difference between us (Europe included) and the rest of the world. You are so spoiled and have no idea. Spoiled with an education, safety, a life of a thousand years of knowledge, art, and free thought.

It's naturally western to believe that people all over the world have similar sensibilities. It just makes sense. I'm not insulting anyone. Just pointing out that you are dealing with an alien culture and people.

By the time Europe had been torn down at the end of World War 2, you had been up to nearly 1200 years of almost constant warfare. Why did Europe stabilize? Because the allies stuck around and ensured an enduring civilization was created from what was left. Sure the Cold War was a driving factor, but while the USSR failed, they did stabilize Eastern Europe.

With the Middle East, something similar will have to happen and it's going to take decades. That's if our political leaders are willing to do it, which I seriously doubt. After all, there's elections to be won. The French won't stop, neither will the Russians. Everyone agrees the attacks are abhorrent to the absolute maximum, but unless a true coalition that is willing to stick around for 30-40 years forms (i.e. NATO, the Warsaw Pact, etc), we'll be right back to where we are now in 10-15 years.

I seriously don't see any other way. We can't wait them out, they'll just get stronger. We can't "contain" them, and airstrikes are a crappy way to enforce containment. This is where the UN needs to grow a pair and be useful.

I figured out how Obama is going to get troops to Syria and not put boots on the ground.

He is going to dispatch an all woman and transgendered special ops division and they will put heels on the ground instead.

Oh boy...could you imagine the reaction of the crazies in the middle east if there was such a thing? The Fightin Caitlyn's...or something....

It probably wouldn't impact Isis / AQ any at all, agreed.

Too late sadly. It was the only solution that could have ever worked.

Still a good idea though.

It would help our budget.

It would take targets out of their home court.

Soldiers and their families probably would rather patrol our border than participate in color revolutions and random adventuring.

As for saying fuck it and just getting out, agree as well. These are barbarians, not civilized people. I don't really give a fuck what happens to these nations, their people, or their oil. Just walking out sounds fine to me.

We have nothing as a nation of people to gain by interacting with them. Their oil is completely replaceable with other production.
