And if one of those stories includes something that USC's explicitly told him not to report, they're free to ban him from the practices that they give him the privilege to attend.

This.

The reporter is well within his right to report on something that comes across his desk. However, the university and program are well within their right to revoke his access for doing so. He chose to ignore their rules/policies and briefly paid the price.

I hate the slimeball as much as the next guy and yeah he probably could have handled it better but I don't disagree with the university revoking access because of it.

Mike Leach was on the radio yesterday and he was implying that revealing injuries of students is a HIPAA violation, so that is why the coach and school are so sensitive about this. Hate to side with Kiffin, but the reporter was being an unethical ass.

Balderdash! It MIGHT (and frankly, that's long stretch of it) be a HIPAA violation for the coach/school to discuss student health issues without appropriate consent from the student, but a newspaper reporter...or another student...has no duties under that law.

The real issue always is whether there's any competitive advantage involved.

And USC has no duties under any law to allow access to any reporter.

Mmmmm, not so fast on that one. Depends on whether you mean access to A reporter or access to ALL reporters. If it is the former, then the reason for denial CAN be a legal issue.

Meanwhile, to get back on topic, KIFFIN IS STILL AN ASS!

If a reporter reports an injury, and you let him back in to the next practice, and then he reports another injury, and so on, at what point is the school responsible for the supposedly private information being broadcast to the public? I say throw the bum out, to play it safe.

I get the feeling that Kiffin won't last too long as the HC. He keeps saying stupid things. First, the thing about accusing UFM about the recruiting gaffe, then voting USC #1 while claiming to not vote them #1, and now this. I suspect it'll be there only a few years at most.

Where has it been said that the story on the kicker's injury came from practice?

The article seems to imply that the reporter was banned merely for reporting on the injury, not because of where the information came from. If Kiffin decided that anyone who reports injuries is de-facto banned regardless of where the info came from then that is complete BS.

If the information came out during a regularly scheduled press conference, then again it is complete BS. If USC/Kiffin doesn't want something reported on, then they need to not discuss it during press conferences.

Finally if the information was derived from privileged access to closed practices then we finally get to a point where it is entirely reasonable for the staff to ban a reporter from practices.

Maybe it's because I tend to hate the entitlement that media members show, but I don't see much wrong with Kiffin's thinking here. His actions? Could be handled a lot better, but I get tired of these media people who act like they're above the rules/requests of the coaching staffs.

You are missing the point here

I stand by my opinion that this guy is a world class turd sandwich.

USC coach Lane Kiffin may have tried to willfully deceive Colorado during the Trojans' 50-6 win. That's what the L.A. Times was wondering when the paper asked Kiffin about backup quarterback Cody Kessler changing jerseys while playing on special teams in the first half.

Kessler usually wears No. 6, but he switched to No. 35 during special teams plays, which included a run for a two-point conversion. Punter Kyle Negrete is No. 35.
