Great article on Southeastern recruiting.....I've posted part of it.

I wonder who the coach at MSU was when they recruited Means??

Now, if you are going to talk about the Tahd Program, the brain damaged moonie-like adherants of the drunken Bear cult- then yeah - they will lie cheat, steal and buy players on a routine basis.

Jeez guys, I never thought contesting that fact was even on the table.

Well if they are a fan of keeping tabs of where the whores are at then I guess they aren't all that bad. Must be a B10 thing.

I want my coaches as aggressive on the recruiting trail as they are on the sidelines.

How many times have you heard from a young man - "Hey, Coach X was with me from the start. He's been recruiting me from Day 1 and I respect that. He made me feel wanted"

"coach x was with me from the start" is a very different statement than the one i replied to and you know it.

Good Lord. Yeah, the Big-10 does not want aggressive recruiting from its coaches...

i suspect we have different definitions for the word "aggressive". mine doesn't involve the following quote:

They DO NOT QUIT till they get a yes

Do you even get how silly this makes you sound? The Woofman said nothing about dishonesty nor did he imply that we condone impropriety. We do like a coach that get after recruiting and does everything within the rules to get some studs. Without the athletic talent you will not win, despite the best coaching in the world.

there is nothing inherently dishonest or illegal about pressuring someone into making a decision that is in YOUR best interest rather than whats in THEIRS. in some parts of life "the rules" shouldn't be the only guiding principle you go by. not pointing any fingers or making any accusations. but for me personally, id rather be able to look myself in the mirror than have an unblemished record. victory at all costs is only applicable to armed combat. even then its debatable.

"Please Sir, feel free to take my player, and may he prosper in the laudable academic environment at your fine institution."

isn't that supposed to be what happens? seriously, this SHOULDN'T be about conference titles nc's or some coaches upcoming multi million dollar contract negotiations. this is SUPPOSED to be about what is in the best interest of the student. this is SUPPOSED to be about a kid getting an education and preparing for the next stage in life... right?

at some point we as fans need to take stock in what exactly we are really fans of. are we fans of the university? are we fans of the sport? are we fans of these kids and enjoy watching them grow and mature into young adults? or are we a ravenous pack of never was desperately trying to relive some part of our lost youth through a KID who doesn't even know who we are?

I suspect that you are reading into that elements of impropriety. I did not when I read it. So we do disagree, but I would suspect that the disagreement is almost negligible if we talked specifics and not generalized statements like you quoted.

The genie began to leak out of the bottle since the 1930s. I remember old movies and press stories referring to "ringer" football players brought in to win games in the leather helmet days. It was win or be fired back then too.

Really, if you want to be all naive and Ivory tower about it, you could save a few million dollars for tOSU academics by firing Tress and giving it to a guy happy to coach for 200K. As you say, this is SUPPOSED to be about what is in the best interest of the student. So shouldn't your school be about scholarships and research funding and not millions to coaches? Er...no, it does not work that way. tOSU did not get to be a dynasty by saving money on coaches or facilities or by failing to go after highly ranked high school athletes. No school athletic program that is successful is successful by accident. No athletic program can win without quality athletes.

Back in the day when the only option for a Buckeye athlete was a good job after graduation or a poorly playing part time gig with pro ball, what you said could be true. But when TV has turned college and pro sports into a billion dollar industry, the athletes know that success in a good program is entry to pro football millions. The best that you can say about it is that it is a symbiotic relationship, with the school getting happy alums and millions in merchandising and TV revenue, and the athletes getting a shot at a degree and - millions of dollars in a proo career.

When one win can mean the difference to a coach receiving his two or three million dollar salary, reality sets in.

it wasn't the cheating that got him fired...it was losing.

He sucked at cheating was the problem.
We expect our cheaters do deliver the goods a lil more often.

That ring buys a long grace period, especially on Rocky Top - where they have dick for tradition and 2nd class whores as co-eds.

You must have had better experiences in that state than I did

Maybe the server rejects the idea that a LSU fan, Georgia fan, and Florida fan can post amicably in the same thread?

UGA = Auburn
i.e. consistently the most overrated teams in the SEC

Fuck Florida! They couldn't win a SEC championship (without cheating) until the 90's, now they act like they invented football.

The idea that the Big 10 is filled with Coaches of Gandhi like pacificity when it comes to recruiting is laughable. "Please Sir, feel free to take my player, and may he prosper in the laudable academic environment at your fine institution."
When you're arguing against a point I didn't make, it makes me hate the SEC even more :p

Is there any doubt, handlers still look for handouts?? Is the shady character handling Bryce Brown's recruitment really looking out for Bryce's best interests?? Or is he hoping for a side deal like that similar of Young and Adams?
