He could probably be in either category. If there is potential for the DB to be a great CB, usually they put him in the CB rankings. Also, these lists are not necessarily who is the best right now. Right now, Joyner might be the top S in high school but he has the potential to develop into the top CB so rivals lists him as the #1 CB prospect.

You could look at this two ways... He's an athlete and/or a DB... our coaches will find out what position suits him best then couple this with input from the athlete as to where he wants to play...

So doesn't worry me as to what position he is listed... now...

Agreed!

I still remember Ted Ginn listed as a 5 star corner prospect out of Glenville, Anthony Gonzalez was a 4 star CB .
Chris Gamble was a wr, until he got thrown into a prevent package on D.
Some insider observed Gamble moved over because he had the best cover skills of anyone on the roster, which included Youboty, Underwood, and Fox!
I guess those all worked out alright.

Ok, all of those were valid points, I was just a little puzzled because if he was rated so high at one position I didn't understand why he was being projected at another. But it makes sense if these rankings are projections and a lot of times these HS kids don't play the same position in college.

In past years, nearly every highly rated Safety or Safety/Cornerback tweener recruited by Tressel to OSU started off his first season at CB.

In recent years, Donte Whitner, Jamario O'Neal, Kurt Coleman, Ohrian Johnson, Eugene Clifford, etc. all spent one year at CB before moving to S full time.

I would guess that would be how things would play out as well with LaMarcus. One year at CB where he would compete to be the nickelback and really work on his coverage skills. Then, either stay at CB or make the move to SS like Donte did.

The method has really worked in putting out NFL caliber safeties and I think Coleman is the next in line to be a high NFL draft pick in April.

Lamarcus Joyner not only is seeking a state but also a national championship at star-studded St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). The defending national-champion Raiders - No. 1 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 - are 11-0 this year and riding a 35-game winning streak.

The 5-9, 170-pound senior has dominated this year as a cornerback, safety, wide receiver and running back ? not to mention as a kick returner. He has made 14 catches for 236 yards and four touchdowns, run 35 times for 325 yards and two touchdowns and returned seven kickoffs for 350 yards and three touchdowns.

On defense he has made eight solo and 10 assisted tackles while also causing two fumbles and recovering one.

?He?s had a real good year,? veteran coach George Smith said. ?He?s a guy you can do (many) things with. We like to get him the ball as much as we can. He?s extremely fast and has a great vertical leap. He?s extremely strong in the weight room and he?ll hit you.?

Joyner has visited Ohio State, Notre Dame and Florida State. Smith said that he also plans to visit Florida and possibly Southern California.

Joyner vital to STA's success
BY MANNY NAVARRO

When Lamarcus Joyner sat down to Thanksgiving dinner last year, he had a lot to be thankful for.

This year, he has more reasons.

Not only does the 5-9, 180-pound St. Thomas Aquinas senior have his choice of elite colleges -- Florida, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, USC and Florida State -- but he also has the academic requirements to get into whichever school he chooses. Since transferring from Southwest Miami High last February, Joyner has raised his grade-point average to a 3.3, and in his eyes prepared himself for the next level.

``This season has definitely been what I hoped it would be, plus more,'' Joyner said. ``St. Thomas is a place that's made me a better person and prepared me for life. I wasn't ready 12 months ago.''

Joyner, one of 16 finalists for the U.S. Army National Player of the Year Award, has more than done his share to help the No. 1-ranked Raiders (11-0) on the football field. Playing safety, corner, running back and returning kickoffs, he has tallied more than 908 all-purpose yards and scored nine touchdowns. His most memorable moment so far?

``Returning the kickoff for a touchdown against Byrnes,'' Joyner said. ``It meant so much for this team. I'm hoping I can have a few more of those in the playoffs.''

The Raiders will host district rival South Broward (10-1) Friday night in the Region 4-5A semifinals. Joyner had a 99-yard kickoff return for a score in the Raiders' 51-7 win over the Bulldogs on Nov. 6 and helped shut down South Broward star running back Kevin Grooms.

``Over here we take it one game at a time,'' Joyner said. ``We're not looking ahead. But I heard Ely was going to be a nice test in the playoffs. We're kind of looking forward to that.''
