Prahalis makes USA U-18 national team

Ohio State incoming freshman point guard Samantha "Sammy" Prahalis kept a streak alive this morning by earning a spot on Team USA for the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship for Women Tournament.

Prahalis did acknowledge the flutter of some internal butterflies while she was waiting word following the three-day trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Even though she had never been cut from a team, Prahalis knew she was trying out with 33 of the best players in the country for one of 12 roster spots.

"I was really nervous because I shot terrible," she said. "But I did set up my teammates well and I played good defense. I tried to be a vocal leader on every team I played for. And I wanted to play as hard as I could."

OSU coach Jim Foster watched the tryouts.

was running through some of the women's basketball web sites today and stopped at All Star Girls Report. I found a brief look at recruiting classes for 2009. These are verbal commitments. The letter of intent has yet to be signed. The kids listed could change their minds and a ton of others have yet to make a decision.

Even so, Ohio State was listed at No. 4 since receiving verbal commitments from Pickerington Central's Emilee Harmon and Cincinnati Princeton's Brianna Sanders. Baylor, UConn and Virginia were 1, 2, 3 in that order. Baylor has a commitment from 6-6 center Brittney Griner, the second-ranked player in the country in every recruiting list I've encountered.

I talked to Bret McCormick, the recruiting guru for ASGR, and he stressed how early it is in the process. He actually had to look at the story to remember what he had written.

Basketball dominating Harmon's summer

By JOE ARNOLD ? Sports Writer ? July 1, 2008

PICKERINGTON - A year ago, Emilee Harmon was a bystander at one of the most prestigious prep basketball events in the U.S.
This year she was healthy, happy and eager to learn.
Harmon spent three days in June at the U.S. Olympic Training Center with 34 other high school basketball stars vying for one of 12 roster spots on the Women's U-18 National Basketball Team.
The Pickerington Central senior didn't make the cut on June 12, but was satisfied with the experience nonetheless.
"It was disappointing. You always want to make a team," Harmon said. "At the same time, though, I get the chance to go back out there next year."
Harmon, who has orally committed to play at Ohio State, watched the 2007 tryouts from the sidelines because of a stress fracture in her right leg. Although the injury kept her on the bench, her education never stopped.

Buckeye snapshot

I picked up two preseason college basketball magazines - Lindy's and Athlon - and turned to the sections on the women's game.
Connecticut is No. 1 in both preseason polls and that makes perfect sense even with though top-rated freshman Elena Della Donne decided not to play basketball. The Huskies still have player-of-the-year candidate Maya Moore, Tina Charles and Renee Montgomery returning.
The Athlon top 10 is: 1. UConn; 2. California; 3. Stanford; 4. Texas A&M; 5. Duke; 6. Maryland; 7. Oklahoma; 8. Arizona State; 9. Tennessee; 10. Louisville.
The Lindy's top 10 is: 1 UConn; 2. Stanford; 3. Maryland; 4. Tennessee; 5. Rutgers; 6. North Carolina; 7. Duke; 8. California; 9. Louisville; 10. Oklahoma.
Notice the difference of opinion after the Huskies. Also notice the absence of a Big Ten team in the equation. Ohio State is the only Big Ten team ranked in the top 25 in both polls. The Buckeyes are No. 17 in Lindy's and No. 13 in Athlon. Michigan State is No. 23 in Athlon.
OSU sophomore center Jantel Lavender, the Big Ten freshman and co-player of the year last season, gets a nod as a second-team All American in Athlon. No other Big Ten player receives a mention. Word has it that Lavender is adding a three-point shot this season to her inside game.

Foster loses best Ohio recruit... again.

Foster again loses the best player in Ohio as Ruef out of Beavercreek will make Stanford her new home next season. She is the 16th ranked player in the country and will play the wing at 6'2". She was heavily recruited by former Buckeye Amy Tucker who is a native of Springboro along with former Buckeye Coach Tara VanDerveer. Congrats to the Cardinal for a good pick up.

PSU is tearing up the recruiting scene as is Illinois. Purdue is also getting a good class and OSU will be slipping to about 4th in the conference. I guess the recruits are finally catching on...

Thanks for the update:(. I sure hope that Foster changes his style of play this season as has been rumored or he probably will lose more big-time recruits from Ohio. Hopefully, he can land Hill's sister is she has not landed someplace else by now.

Hill has not considered OSU and we are not on her final list.

Foster has been saying that he will change his style ever since he arrived in Columbus. Actually, those were his exact words at his presser as he said he couldn't wait to recruit athletes to OSU unlike those he could recruit to Vandy. Hmm... was he slamming our academics??? How many players really have the green light at OSU if not a post? Not many in his tenure or there is @#$% to pay behind the scenes if a bad shot (in his mind) is taken.

Do you really think you can teach an old dog new tricks? He talks the talk, but never walks the walk. He has been out recruited for top players in Ohio since his arrival. He is a one trick pony and that is having a dominant post player and praying to find a good point guard. Times have not changed a bit.

If you read my prior posts on this thread regarding Foster, you will see that I am not his biggest fan but CBF40 has tried to turn my thinking. When I see him change his style of play, I will believe it when I see it. I know that he brought in that great PG from New York so he must of had to tell her that he was going to change his style of play. Hopefully, he told her the truth.

He always recruits a very good post player and his style usually revolves around that post player. That is so easy to defend and that is why he has not gone any place in the NCAA. He must change his style of play or we will lose more big-time recruits out of Ohio. Losing one to the Stanford program is not shameful but it is another loss.

We did win the Big Ten last year right? Was that not our 3rd straight Big Ten title? Foster is 130-32.......not to shabby despite his struggles in the NCAAs......
I guess at Ohio State I would like to see more than just Big 10 titles and if he doesn't change his philosophy this coming season those will start coming to an end. The state of Ohio is one of the most fertile states for high school girls basketball players.
