Lady Bucks Basketball Thread

Purdue has a chance to unseat OSU if they stay healthy this year and have a better recruiting class coming in than OSU. Illinois is in on some of the top recruits in the country and she is turning heads (Rutgers type recruits as she was the recruiting coord.). PSU may have one of the top three classes in the country this year... after recovering from the late Rene years.

Foster continues to do the same old thing and is hardly ever mentioned by any big name recruits. We have the best facilities in the country and can't draw a whiff from most of the top players. Matta is doing it with his energy and effort but we don't see the same from the women's side. His program continues to draw few fans... about 7th in the Big 10 but he makes the most money. It is time for him to be accountable.

We shall see how the point guard does... but we already have 2 point guards who have started many games in the program. Will this one player who is slight of build make a difference? Time will tell... but she was not recruited by UCONN or UT if that means anything...

I see her as a Jamie Lewis type player. One that is decent but will not take the team to the next level.

Foster lost out on the two recruits he wanted mostly in this class. The post out of Columbus and the one out of Beavercreek. Losing 2 top players this close to home has to mean something. If it was on the men's side... you would hear people calling for Thad's head.

Foster won when the Big 10 was really down... probably last in the power conferences. We shall see what happens as the league improves with these new coaches making some moves and showing some great recruiting energy.

I would not go that far:biggrin2:. I have seen video of the PG from N. Y. and when it comes to ballhandling she has a little bit of Pistol Pete in her. There could have been other reasons that UT or UConn did not recruiter besides her basketball ability. She did verbal awfully early to Ohio State.

With regards to attendance, I think for women's basketball there was a big mistake to move them to the Schot. When you don't get more than 5000 people into that place, it's almost like playing in an open gym. However, Ohio State women's basketball might draw a little better if it was more entertaining, i.e. up-tempo

Aw... c'mon LitlBuck.... do you really think anyone will be allowed to play with a "Pistol Pete" type of a game under Foster? I have seen two of her games... and some of that stuff won't fly on the college level.
Wait until the Buckeye Planet "Crazy":lift: who has a little more reputation sees your posts... Oh My!:)

If Foster does not change his philosophy this year, he should be ejected. I know that we have won 3 Big 10 titles but teams are starting to catch us as you have mentioned. I guess we shall see. Do you have any idea who might be on Foster's recruiting radar if Hill is not coming here:huh:

Obviously dissapointed to see us lose Ruef...She is good friends with Harmon and most had us as the favorite, but she didn't even visit, like she was suppossed to before her decision...

As for style you will see a change this year....NOt sure on how much, but there will be a change...We really lack a true shooter or two to be an elite team tho...That is what I hope that Foster is out there trying to pull in...

Lavendar will be a great player for us this year...

Heard Amber Stokes is very fast on the court...

I think Foster is done recruiting for the season... not good enough to break in with the elite and perhaps losing to 3 other Big Ten schools. Illinois is still in on a few really top players. I am not sure if PSU is done or not, but they are turning heads.

Recruit picks Stanford

Beavercreek High School senior Mikaela Ruef, reportedly an Ohio State recruiting target, chose Stanford over the Buckeyes and Purdue.
Ruef, a 6-foot-2 forward, told the Dayton Daily News that Stanford began recruiting her last year. She took her offical visit to Palo Alto, Cal., last weekend and informed former OSU coach Tara VanDerveer of her decision Sunday.
Ruef started her basketball career as a point guard and brings good ballhandling skills to the forward position. She told the DDN that she plans to work on her quickness and strength to prepare for the jump to college.
"I know I'm not the quickest player around," Ruef said. "(Coach VanDerveer) thinks I can guard someone at the four spot, but I can play the three."
Ohio State '09 recruit Emilee Harmon, a senior at Pickerington Central, and Ruef were AAU teammates this summer with the Dayton Lady Hoopstars. Princeton High School senior guard Brianna Sanders is the other commitment for coach Jim Foster.

C-J's Walker leans toward UConn

The junior is one of the top girls basketball players in the nation, and the recruiters are in hot pursuit.

DAYTON ? Neither Tamika (Williams) Raymond nor Geno Auriemma were in the gym Tuesday night, Sept. 30, but their influence was.

Another Chaminade-Julienne High School girls basketball open gym drew more college coaches to be seen "giving love," as players and coaches say, to C-J's Samarie Walker.

The sleek, 6-foot-1 wing player with an all-around game has been rated as the country's top junior by several online scouting groups.

"I think it's been a gradual incline since she came in as a freshman," C-J coach Marc Greenberg said. "There was always certainly a talent there, but she did nothing but solidify herself this summer. She has brought her game to another level."

That's brought out letters, phone calls and e-mails from across the nation.

"My coach usually tells me (who attends) so I don't have to look, but sometimes I take a peek over there," Walker said. "It's exciting."

Walker said Auriemma couldn't make it Tuesday. Raymond starred at C-J and played for Auriemma at Connecticut. Walker will see Auriemma at an event this weekend in Columbus.

"Growing up, I watched Tamika since I was in the fourth grade," Walker said. "I saw her go to UConn, saw some of the championships and that's when I knew I wanted to go to UConn.

"My freshman year, I thought they were going to be recruiting me and they weren't, so I kind of changed my mind about where I wanted to go. Now, they're recruiting me and I'm on top of their recruiting list and they're on top of my list, too."

Walker said her father, Sam, won't let her commit too early.

"We haven't visited (every top school) yet," he said. "So her mind might change."

Sam had a slightly different top seven schools, with his including Dayton. Watching the pick-up games with his son, 3-year-old Sam Jr., he marveled at his daughter's status among coaches.

"I find it kind of strange that they would drive so far just to see her for an hour or two," he said. "It's nice, though. She has remained humble, and I'm proud of that."

Walker said she would "love to go away from Ohio for a little bit," but that maybe her father is right about waiting to commit. "I agree with him to some extent, but that's my dream school," Walker said of UConn. "But, I've got to listen to him."

The Walkers moved to Dayton from Illinois in 1996. Samarie watched her dad play as a toddler, started at 2 and was on teams at 4 years old.

While she admits she has weaknesses to work on, she's proud ? and protective ? of the mythical No. 1 scouting rankings. "I check it about once or twice a week to see if anything has changed," she said. "I don't want anyone to take my spot."

We did win the Big Ten last year right? Was that not our 3rd straight Big Ten title? Foster is 130-32.......not to shabby despite his struggles in the NCAAs......
The Big Ten is aweful in women's basketball the last few years. Winning a bad conference is not good enough for me and I'm sure some others here, and even though we're winning we aren't dominating it. We lost to frickin' Indiana last year, not acceptable.

No problem. OSU has given him a raise and an extended contract. Why should he have to work harder?

I say it is time for a buyout after this season and move this program to the top as it has the potential to compete with the Big Dogs.

Why I would not mind seeing another coach assume Foster's position, he is a very class guy and emphasizes other things than just basketball such as academics which means something to me. Also, I do not think that is the way the Ohio State athletic department works. He is doing some very good things with the program but I just think it could be a little bit better.

Don't bring up academics. OSU has had more ineligible players under Foster than the past two coaches. Every women's program usually meets the APR and standards as women know they need the degree while a percentage of men don't finish. Foster also has had less OSU scholar athletes and OSU all academic Big Ten players. He also has recruited a few that have been barely eligible (passing due to lots of tutoring). One of his past recruits landed here as she got in via the last ACT try and could not get into the school of her choice. Yes, he will graduate all of his players... but so do most programs in the NCAA that care about their athletes.

Do class coaches bully and degrade their players? Does their language rival Rich Rod? IF so, I guess I struggle with the definition of class. Oh yeah... if we want class.... see Jim Tressel. Foster isn't on the same planet.

All I knew was that while he was at Vanderbilt he was noted for all his players graduating. That has been said repeatedly. I know that there have been a couple players who have missed some time at Ohio State because of academics but I think you might be stretching it a little. I do not know that I personally but I have just heard that he has always been a class person. Perhaps since you're closer to the scene, you know a great deal more than I do.
