Kiyaunta Goodwin (OL Kentucky, transfer to Florida)

So what are we holding our teams standard to be now? Aw shucks at least we play in big games and 5stars know where OSU is on a map? Or are we moving into the future of wanting to win NCs and not being content with just B1G titles and beating scUM? At this point, Bama and Clemson are the biggest thorn in OSU's side, and getting to the mountain top, we need to win the OT battles. Because Bama sure is, and they're not seeming to be happy with a 3star project if they lose out on a 5star OT. We shouldn't be holding on to the past Tressel days and use that as a barometer for today and the future. Because tbh, Tressel and his ways wouldn't last in the current elite CFB landscape
I’d be fine holding this team to the standard that’s been set by the last few O Lines. Which is the point that some of us have been trying to make. Additionally I think it is ridiculous to think stud can’t recruit when he clearly has and you cannot convince me that it takes a certain talent to recruit outside guys versus inside guys. It’s not logical to say that missing on some elite tackles points to him being a bad recruiter

And it absolutely doesn’t point to him being a bad position coach.

Does it suck? Yes

....does it prove anything? No.

We don't know why he's missed on a series of elite tackles but he clearly has. Why, is open to speculation.

I, personally, don't dismiss topics just because I don't have the answers to the questions. I think it's healthy to ask "why?" if you don't know. To each their own on that world view however.

I don’t think it’s a question of different skill sets (recruiting tackles vs. recruiting interior linemen) so much as it’s a question of degree of difficulty. Elite tackle prospects are in shorter supply than are elite guard prospects, and so it is harder to consistently land elite tackle prospects.

Not even close to being accurate. A 4star from a school like IMG, Aledo, Moeller, etc isn’t the same as getting a 3star from a rural school. You can’t seriously believe that 4star Thayer Mulford when he came to OSU was in the same boat as Grant Toutant. Yes, you can say pretty much every kid going to college on a D1 scholarship is a project, but some come better prepared than others. A Toutant can have success, but he shouldn’t be where your class or OL is hanging its hat on.

You’re arguing a point nobody made. I never said all players are equal coming into a program. I said everybody, specifically OL, outside of one or two people are projects. I don’t care what program they came from. A 5 star from IMG can be further along than a 3 star from the middle of nowhere when they hit campus. That doesn’t mean the 5 star will see the field faster nor does it mean the 5 star will have a better career.

The NFL draft shows you every year that OL recruiting is a crapshoot. Look at recruiting rankings. Just pick a year since 2013 or 14 and see how many of the top 5 OT’s were drafted in the first round. At a premium position, by the way. Heck, in the class of 2015 none of the top 5 guys were even drafted at all and there were 12 OT’s taken in the three 1st rounds that they would’ve been eligible. 2018, ‘19, and ‘20.

Maybe Goodwin will end this debate somewhat and flip to the good guys.

He’s anything but a sure thing though. I’ve always heard it’s the hardest position to project on and this guy has things you can’t teach but it’s yet to be seen how he will do.

I’d say the closest guy to a sure thing, PJ is a Buckeye. So there’s that.

He was at Mich St this week for an unofficial visit. Feels to me like that confirms this was not a “miss” but should be bucketed in some other category.
It was most certainly a miss, but Birm has been pretty clear that the staff was disappointed in his decision to commit days before the visit ban lifted and they have not been aggressively pursuing him since that time.

I think what you might be getting at is that if a kid chooses Kentucky over Ohio State (and Clemson and Bama, etc.), he doesn’t have the mentality to compete that Ohio State coaches are looking for, which is probably true as indicated by them basically cutting things off.

Birm also speculated that if Goodwin wanted to visit Ohio State the coaches wouldn’t tell him ‘no’ but it is entirely up to him to initiate that visit.

So, a good miss?

I’m not sure that’s the case anymore.
OSU has hosted some pretty big OL prospects the past few weeks, and reportedly is only looking at taking three.

The OL numbers are going to be tight in the class (even if they bump the number to four), and I can see the coaches not wanting to gamble on a kid who might not have the intangibles they are looking for.
