K/P Ben Buchanan (official thread)

In 30 Varsity games thus far (and 10 Freshman games), Buchanan has never booted a single kick off out of bounds. What WADC45 was saying is Buchanan's kick offs were going out of the back of the end zone, not out of bounds. With the college game now kicking off from the 30 yard line, kick offs out of the back of the end zone will become rare.

I was just giving WADC45 a hard time...I know what he meant. Note the smiley.

Didn't Purdon't have a kid who handled both punting and kicking duties...I thought the Bengals drafted him.

Anyway, I find it humorous and great how much Coach Tressel has gotten us into the importance of the kicker (special teams) position.

How things can change (at least my own perspective) in just a few short years...Nuge, Houston, Pettrey, Pretorious, Buchanan...Groom, Sander, Trapasso, Buchanan...what a crazy string of talent at the K/P position.

I just watched the OSU vs. Arizona St. Rose Bowl on ESPN Classic this past weekend and was caught by surprise as we were driving for the winning (potentially tying FG) score and the announcer stated, "Josh Jackson's Career Long is 39 yards. They'll need to get a little closer to get into his range."

"WHAT!?!? They're inside the 30! Nuge could make that kick blindfolded from the seated position!" is what I thought. Not really, but I was shocked that as long as Josh Jackson's career at OSU was, 39 yards was his career best.

How spoiled I've become.

Thrilled Ben is coming to :osu: to continue my spoiled ways.

Yeah, and then after the Germaine to Boston TD we miss the extra point!
Nothing was certain in the '90s when it came to placekicking.

Buchanan should get to be a four-year kicker for us (09 - 12) with a RS year.

Sorry to show my age.

One name of someone who punted and kicked for OSU that comes to mind is Tom Skladany. He was a tremendous player whose career overlapped with Archie's, who was not only a 2 or 3 time All American punter for the Bucks (and future NFL All-Pro with the Lions) but also had a strong placekicking leg. Don't know if his kick at Illinois in '75 is still the OSU record, but it went for 58 or 59 yards (it was longer than Nugent's kick against Marshall).

Skladany's role as a placekicker was primarily to kick off. He did have some long field goal attempts.
Watching those teams warm up, the most impressive thing was watching Skladany. Bomb after bomb with serious hang time.
I remember him kicking a few through the uprights on kickoffs (from the 40 in those days, though)
He was unarguably tOSU's best-ever punter. Just as the Nuge is unarguably tOSU's best-ever placekicker.
Nuge's 54 yarder against Marshall would have been good from close to 70 yards. And I remember a 48 yarder or so that hit way up on the flagpole in the closed end - hadn't even hardly started to come down yet.

Didn't Ben kick a 53 and 58 yarder in camp this summer? We are going to be spoiled for years to come.

Eh, you're not that old...I suspect most of us remember him. I'm almost embarrassed to admit this, but he was the guy I had a jersey of when I was growing up. Some kids wanted Pete Johnson's number, me: I had Skladany.

Tom was simply awesome back then. What a weapon to have as a punter. Groom reminded me of him.

It's early to start these comparisons with Ben, but he sure does appear to be a real weapon that fits JTs needs perfectly.
