Mike Nugent took the early lead in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' place-kicker competition with a 51-yard field goal Saturday night.
In his first field goal attempt for Tampa Bay, the five-year veteran -- a former New York Jets and Ohio State kicker -- promptly earned the confidence of his coaches and teammates in the 27-20 preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans.
Several teammates congratulated Nugent after his field goal before halftime.
"A kicker being a new guy, no matter what you've done in the past, whether you're a rookie or a 10-year guy, you kind of have to earn that confidence that teammates have in you," Nugent said. "You have to earn it on the field."
The Buccaneers are going to have enough issues this season, without having to worry about the reliability of their kicker.
The team's decision back in March to sign Nugent, who has a strong leg, to create competition for veteran kicker Matt Bryant, is turning out to be very fortuitous.
Bryant's sore hamstring kept him out of practice again Monday. Bucs head coach Raheem Morris said the 34-year-old incumbent kicker will be evaluated Thursday.
Then it will be determined if Bryant will kick Saturday against the Jaguars in Jacksonville. He has been sidelined for more than a week of training camp and did not play against the Titans.
