Nugent's injury gets Feely back in the game

By Associated Press

Friday, September 12, 2008
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? Jay Feely was miserable last weekend, watching NFL games from his couch instead of warming up his kicking leg on the sideline.
"When you're not playing, it's a humbling experience, especially when you have good years," the New York Jets' new kicker said this week. "More than anything, sitting at home watching a game this past Sunday made me want to play a lot more."
Feely is back in the league after signing with the Jets and replacing the injured Mike Nugent.
"When Mike got hurt, they started making calls," Feely said. "I was very excited to get the opportunity to come up here. I think it's an organization that wants to win ... and is in great position in the AFC."

Jets' Nugent still hurting

By Chick Ludwig
the Dayton Daily News

Thursday, October 09, 2008

New York Jets kicker Mike Nugent ? the former Ohio State star from Centerville High School ? could miss his fourth straight game Sunday against the Bengals because of a thigh injury. Jay Feely is subbing for him.
"He's still working through an injury," Mangini said. "But he's been moving along, and we'll have to see where he is at the end of the week.
"We have a plan in place. What we don't want to have happen is have any setbacks. We will not try to rush things for the sake of rushing things. I think Jay's done a good job filling in for him."

Jets kicker Nugent getting close to returning

By Jane McManus
The Journal News ? November 8, 2008

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Mike Nugent said that thinking is the enemy of any good kicker. During those minutes on the sideline, long stretches when the offense or defense is in, any small thought can balloon too quickly. Particularly if a kicker is thinking about whether he is healthy.
"You don't want to be on the field thinking, 'Gosh, I can only put out 90 percent of my effort right now,' " Nugent said.
Which is why he is taking his recovery from a right thigh injury slowly.
Nugent has never spent much time on an injury report, so in that way alone, this season has been difficult. He has been coming into the Jets' practice facility more often than when he just comes to practice so that he can get treatment.
"Just trying to get out there this week in practice and trying to keep building strength," Nugent said. "This is my first time really being injured in my career playing football my whole life. I've learned that it's not only getting better, getting better from an injury, it's also keeping the strength, building strength back up."
He last played in the first week against Miami, when he was injured during a kickoff. Nugent is finally back at practice in uniform, getting used to the feeling of kicking again. Jets coach Eric Mangini said that Nugent is one week closer to being back.
"Some days you've really got to listen to your body because your pride tries to jump in and overcome how you feel," Nugent said.
Jay Feely has been filling in for Nugent, but he has missed 4 of 12 field goals, including a potentially expensive one against Kansas City early in the game. What would have been a 10-0 Jets lead soon became a 7-7 tie, and the Jets barely squeaked by with a win thanks to a late touchdown pass from Brett Favre to Laveranues Coles.
Mangini expressed confidence in Feely, and said every kicker misses a few. The ones Feely has made - including a 52-yarder in Oakland to tie the score with three seconds left in regulation - were big.
"Last week's field goal, at the end of the (Buffalo) game, was as important as any that we've had," Mangini said. "Those are pluses. The misses, you don't want those at any point, but each field-goal kicker where I've been has had some misses. We're going to look at that situation closely and make sure Mike is completely healthy. Jay has given us that luxury of time with the way that he's played."
The Jets have had a round robin of kickers and punters this season. Ben Graham started punting but was cut before the San Diego game, only to be brought back for a week when his replacement, Reggie Hodges, became injured.

Kicker Mike Nugent declines offer from New York Jets, will test free-agent market

by Dave Hutchinson/The Star-Ledger Wednesday February 25, 2009, 1:00 AM

Andrew Mills/The Star-LedgerMike Nugent says he feels like it might be time to move on from the Jets.
Kicker Mike Nugent has declined an offer from the Jets to return and will test the free-agent market, The Star-Ledger has learned.
Nugent suffered a strained right quadriceps in the 2008 season opener against the Miami Dolphins and was replaced by veteran Jay Feely for the rest of the season. Nugent was in the final year of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent.

The Jets had been facing a tough decision on whether to keep Nugent or Feely, and probably couldn't go wrong with either one. Now Nugent has made the decision for them.
"The Jets have been really cool about the situation and gave me time to decide whether to stay," Nugent told The Star-Ledger in response to an e-mail Tuesday. "They approached us last week to re-sign, and also called again this week, and gave us a chance to talk about making a decision.
"I have so much respect for the organization and my teammates, but I feel it might be time for me to move on. (General manager) Mike (Tannenbaum), (director of football operations) Ari (Nissim) and the coaches have been incredibly understanding of my decision process and I am really grateful to them."

Feely, who is also an unrestricted free agent, is expected to sign a two- or three-year deal to replace Nugent. Last season, Feely, an eight-year veteran and former Giant, converted 24 of 28 attempts, including his last 14 in a row.

Nugent, a second-round pick in 2005 out of Ohio State, is the top kicker on the free-agent market now that the Titans' Rob Bironas has re-signed with Tennessee.

Bucs Sign K Nugent
By: Jim Flynn
March 4, 2009

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed New York Jets free agent kicker Mike Nugent on Wednesday. Nugent, 27, originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick in 2005. He has made 81.5 percent of his field goals and will compete with Bucs K Matt Bryant.

The Buccaneers want to add competition to every position on their roster, including kicker.

That was made apparent Wednesday when the Bucs signed New York Jets free agent kicker Mike Nugent to a contract.

Terms of the deal were not available.

Nugent, 27, will compete with Bucs K Matt Bryant, who has made 82.1 percent of his career field goals. Bryant, who turns 34 this year, was 32-of-38 (84.2 percent) on field goals last season, but is just 2-of-10 on field goals over 50 yards during his career.

A 2005 second-round draft pick out of Ohio State, Nugent has made 75-of-92 (81.5 percent) of his field goals and 83-of-85 extra points as a pro. That includes 3-of-9 from 50-plus yards out.

Nugent's best season came in 2006 when he made 24-of-27 (88.9 percent) of his field goals. But he missed nearly the entire 2008 season after sustaining a thigh injury in Week 1 of the regular season.

Bryant and Nugent will compete for the right to kick for the Buccaneers in 2009 and beyond. However, there is a chance Tampa Bay could carry two kickers on its 53-man roster as well, depending on how each player performs in training camp and preseason.

Bucs Grab Nugent

TAMPA - That youth kick the Bucs are on extends all the way to the special teams units.

Obviously concerned that 33-year-old Matt Bryant may be losing some of his leg power, the Bucs on Wednesday created a competition for the place-kicker's job by signing 27-year-old Mike Nugent to a one-year contract.

"It is an open competition," Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said during a radio interview with 620 AM. "Matt just set a Bucs single-season point record last year, but we want to increase the competition."

Nugent should have no trouble doing that. Like Bryant, he has made good on 82 percent of his field-goal attempts during his four-year career and has hit on 98 percent of his extra points.

The difference comes in the two kickers' success rates on kicks of 40 yards or more. Since the beginning of the 2006 season Nugent has gone 10-for-12 on field goal tries of 40 to 49 yards and 3-for-7 on tries of 50 yards or more.

Bryant, meanwhile, has gone 16-for-24 on tries of 40 to 49 yards and 1-for-8 on tries of 50 yards or more, with the one good kick being the 62-yarder he made to beat the Eagles on Oct. 22, 2006.

Bryant, of course, spent a good part of the 2008 season kicking under great duress following the sudden death Sept. 24 of his 3-month-old son, Matthew Tryson.

He performed admirably under those conditions, however, hitting on 32 of 38 field goal tries and 35 of 36 extra points, establishing a team record for points with 131.

Nugent, meanwhile, missed all but the first game of last season because of a quad muscle injury. Nevertheless, the 2005 second-round pick of the Jets was still considered the top place-kicker in free agency.

"We feel it's going to be a real healthy competition and we're excited to watch that one unfold throughout the offseason," Dominik told 620.

Bucs' Nugent healthy, ready to compete for kicking job
By IRA KAUFMAN | The Tampa Tribune
Published: May 15, 2009

TAMPA - Following a lost season with the New York Jets, Mike Nugent has declared himself healthy and eager to challenge Matt Bryant for Tampa Bay's kicking job in training camp.

Nugent, a second-round pick of the Jets out of Ohio State in 2005, signed a one-year deal with the Buccaneers in March as a free agent. At 27, Nugent is six years younger than Bryant, whose career 82.1 percent success rate on field-goal attempts is slightly better than Nugent (81.5 percent).

Nugent has recovered from a torn right quadriceps suffered in New York's 2008 opener. By the time Nugent recuperated late in the season, former Tampa Jesuit High standout Jay Feely had established himself as the Jets' kicker.

"I'm doing well and getting after it,'' said Nugent, who attended Tampa Bay's voluntary practice sessions this week while Bryant declined to participate. "It was tough for me last year. I'd never been hurt before seriously enough to miss a game since I was a little kid. Right after the game, I thought I'd be fine and maybe miss a week. Then we got the MRI back and it just didn't look very good at all.''

Bryant set a franchise record with 131 points last season, converting all 27 of his field-goal tries from inside the 40-yard line.

But Bryant went 0-for-3 from 50 yards or longer in 2008 and is only 2-for-10 from long distance during his seven-year career, although he beat the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006 with a memorable 62-yard kick as time expired.

"The best medicine for a torn muscle is just rest,'' Nugent said. "I did a lot of rehab last season, and it was tough to watch your teammates play so hard and you couldn't do anything to help them.''

Nugent is 3-for-9 from 50 yards or longer in his career and has made 53 of 59 attempts from inside the 40.

Kicker duel: For all the talk of the position battles at quarterback and other units, one of the most interesting could be the one brewing at kicker.

The signing of Mike Nugent, a Tampa native, in March was a surprise given veteran Matt Bryant's consistency with the Bucs since 2005. But Nugent is younger (27) than Bryant (33) and arguably has more range, though Bryant has been slightly more consistent. One of Bryant's issues the past couple of seasons is his tendency toward short kickoffs. That has cost the Bucs field position.

Once training camp arrives, they will square off and be under great scrutiny. Morris and general manager Mark Dominik say Nugent was added to increase competition. To that end, the Bucs will have their first legitimate position battle at kicker since 2005, when Todd France challenged Bryant for the job.

Don't be surprised if Bryant doesn't survive this challenge.
