New Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker slips into challenger's shoes
By Dave Scheiber, Times Staff Writer
In Print: Thursday, May 28, 2009

TAMPA ? To fully understand the tenuous life of an NFL kicker, look no further than Mike Nugent, the man seeking to give Bucs incumbent Matt Bryant the boot.

If not for a flukish thigh strain in the season opener last year, Nugent would most likely be preparing for his fifth season with the Jets. After all, he had been nothing short of stellar in his three seasons with the team that drafted him in the second round in 2005 out of Ohio State.

Nugent already ranked fourth in franchise history with 75 field goals, had been named special teams captain in 2007 and established career highs that season with 29 field goals in 36 attempts (after 24 of 27 in 2006 and 22 of 28 as a rookie).

But in New York's first game of 2008, amid the circus atmosphere surrounding quarterback Brett Favre, Nugent felt a tweak in his right thigh on the opening kickoff against the Dolphins. He left the game after missing a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter, returned to kick an extra point in the third ? and would never attempt another kick for the Jets.

Nugent was replaced by veteran free agent Jay Feeley, who made the most of his opportunity and kept the job even when Nugent was healthy enough to return after eight games.

"It was really frustrating," Nugent said after a recent workout at One Buc Place. "Fortunately, I've been very lucky with injuries in my career ? I'd never been hurt before. It was really tough watching all my teammates work so hard and not being able to be in there with them."

Nugent, 27, attributed his injury to a change in his offseason routine, in which he kicked much more than usual. "I like to stick to a routine, but we did a lot more kicking, and I did things I didn't normally do," he said. "The wear and tear on my leg just finally took a toll. It was hard because I was really looking forward to the season as an established veteran."

Instead, Nugent experienced the flip side of a kicker's existence. He worked out quietly on his own, then passed on the Jets' offer to re-sign this year and compete with Feeley. Instead, he opted for free agency as one of the top kickers on the market. Several teams expressed interest, but Nugent was attracted to Tampa Bay because of his comfort level with special teams coach Rich Bisaccia.

TAMPA - Matt Bryant, the most accurate kicker in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history, returned to the team's practice field Tuesday and sounded conflicted about his chances of retaining his starting job in 2009.

The Bucs signed 27-year-old free agent Mike Nugent from the Jets to compete against Bryant, who turned 34 last month. Bryant set a franchise record with 131 points last season while converting 32-of-38 FG attempts, including all 27 of his tries from inside the 40.

Nugent, a second-round pick out of Ohio State in 2005, is considered to have a stronger leg, especially on kickoffs.

Bryant has missed Tampa Bay's voluntary workouts while attending to a family medical issue in Texas. He returned to the Bay area Monday evening and participated in Tuesday's practice session.

"I still need to talk to other people about what's going on,'' Bryant said. "Once I talk to the people I need to talk to, then I can talk more to you guys. You can have more of a story once I talk to other people.''

Bryant apparently is concerned Nugent will have a leg up in their matchup when training camp opens Aug. 1.

CHANGE OF SCENERY TAKES 'NOOOGE' TO TAMPA BAY

Former Buckeye kicker Mike Nugent received 1,229 votes from Association members, second-most of all candidates on the All-Alumni ballot. Nugent, who has connected on 82 percent of his career field goals with the NFL's New York Jets, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason.

It had been a few years since he was recruited, so former Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent was looking forward to being wooed as an NFL free agent last winter. His success in three seasons with the New York Jets attracted a few suitors, and in March he signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But the contract came with a caveat. Nugent must out-kick the incumbent, Matt Bryant, during training camp. Neither is guaranteed a spot on the roster.
Nugent insists he is looking forward to that part of the process, too.

"That's what's great about the NFL. You're always competing," he said.
"Even if there's nobody else there to compete for your job, you're competing with every other kicker in the world, because they all want to be in the NFL. That creates an environment to get better and better every day."

Nugent made 75 of 91 field goal attempts (82.4 percent) in his first three seasons, including 17 of 22 between 40 and 49 yards. He suffered a strained right quadriceps in the opening game of his fourth year. By the time he was ready to return around midseason, his replacement was kicking well, so the Jets opted to keep Nugent on the sidelines.

He blamed the injury on overuse during the preseason, something he has vowed to avoid from now on. He has been working out regularly in Tampa, and he pronounces himself fully healthy.

Nugent's biggest hurdle this summer figures to be mental, rather than physi-
cal. Kickers and punters are the most isolated players on a football team, and the difference between success and failure often is a movement imperceptible to the untrained eye. A tiny change in how the kicker swings his leg can send a ball hooking or slicing wide of the goalposts.

Battle of the Boots: Matt Bryant vs. Mike Nugent
by Buc Wild on Jul 20, 2009

One of the more unnoticed training camp battles this year will take place at the kicker position. Kickers are generally forgotten around the NFL, dismissed as a part of the team and seen by fans as either great (when they convert an attempt) or the worst (when they miss). Everyone points to the kicker?s "one job" that they have to do; put an oddly shaped ball through two posts anywhere from 20 to 50 yards away. That?s it, that?s all they have to do.

Matt Bryant has been with the Bucs for 4 seasons after two one-year stints with the Colts and Dolphins. He spent his first two years in the league kicking for the New York Giants. He?s become somewhat of a fan favorite, particularly with the heart-wrenching story of his young son passing and still coming back that week to kick the game winner. Let?s not forget the 62 yarder he made, the second longest field goal in NFL history that pushed us to a win over Philadelphia after we tried to throw that game away.

The Bucs front office made a good, yet interesting move this offseason. Rather than stand pat with Matt Bryant at kicker, they opted to bring in some competition. But rather than bring in some unheralded camp leg, some undrafted free agent, they brought in a 4 year veteran who was one of the more auspicious kickers in the league, Mike Nugent.

See you on the other side of the jum

Nugent was the second round draft pick of the New York Jets in 2005, and was actually the first player off the board for them. Nugent hails from Ohio State where he set just about every kicking record they have and even won a team MVP award. After signing on with the Jets, he enjoyed moderate success in the Meadowlands before suffering an injury last year and losing his job. Nugent declined the Jets contract offer and opted instead to become a free agent, where he signed with the Bucs. The contract was a one year deal worth $2.4 million, about double what Bryant is scheduled to make.

Seems that the front office is pulling for Nugent, right? It looks that way until you see that Nugent?s contract has no guaranteed money and if he is cut before the regular season, the Bucs owe him nothing. Thus, we have a true training camp battle here.

He was actually born in Kettering but lived in Centerville. I know this 'cause my little bro was born on the same day as Nuge at the same hospital. Our mom's were in the same hospital room as well.

Placekicker

The Bucs have gotten plenty of miles (and points) out of Matt Bryant. He has an average 83.1 percent success rate on field-goal attempts the past four seasons. But the one thing coach Raheem Morris and general manager Mark Dominik have vowed to do is increase the level of competition among all players. That means no job is safe, even for a player who owns a franchise record 62-yard field goal.

To that end, Mike Nugent was signed during the offseason and will be given every opportunity to win the job. His 81.5 career success rate on field-goal attempts is slightly lower than Bryant's 82.1, but Nugent's tendency for longer kickoffs at least evens the competition.

KICKER

Tampa Bay's offense could be in scoring position often this year and Morris wants to make sure his team can at least get three points. Hence, Tampa Bay signed kicker Mike Nugent to push, and possibly surpass, Matt Bryant.

Although he has been Tampa Bay's starting kicker since 2005, Bryant struggled with long-distance kicks last season. Bryant was 27-for-27 on field goals of 39 yards or less, but only 5-for-11 on kicks from 40 yards or more. He was also 0-for-3 on attempts from 50 yards or more.

Nugent is 20 of 31 on field goals of 40 yards or more in his career. This battle might last until final cuts.

A big caveat: Nugent, signed from the Jets, must beat out incumbent Matt Bryant.

A year ago, Bryant, 34, missed 5 of 12 field goals during the preseason, which might have left him without a job had the Bucs invited a better alternative to training camp.

Bryant rewarded the team's patience with the best year of his career, converting 84.2 percent of his attempts, including all 27 from 39 yards and shorter. But Bryant's leg strength was called into question after making only 5 of 11 from beyond 40.

A second-round pick in 2005, Nugent, 27, has a stronger leg, particularly on kickoffs. Special teams coach Richard Bisaccia really liked him coming out of Ohio State.

I'm not sure on the afternoon session, but in the morning session Mike Nugent took all the kicks and made them all, minus one that got blocked. Don't think this is any indication as to who is leading for the job. Expect to see both guys rotated in and out for now.

IT'S GOOD: Mike Nugent got a chance to make some live attempts in a full-squad period and nailed a 54-yard field goal. He was 3 of 5 during the stretch, including another make from 42 yards. He had a 47-yard attempt blocked. Nugent, 27, is competing with 34-year-old veteran Matt Bryant.

Minor injury to kicker Matt Bryant gives Mike Nugent a chance to shine for Tampa Bay Bucs

Mike Nugent, working with holder Josh Bidwell, showed off a powerful leg during Tuesday?s afternoon practice.

TAMPA ? For a day, newcomer Mike Nugent had a leg up on Matt Bryant in the competition to be the kicker.

With Bryant nursing an unspecified but apparently minor leg injury (more on that later), Nugent handled all the placekicking duties in a relatively short special-teams practice Tuesday afternoon.

"He's doing fine," coach Raheem Morris said of Nugent. "He's got a powerful leg."

Nugent, a former Ohio State standout who spent his first four seasons with the Jets, said the chance to solo didn't give him any "advantage" for the job.

"It wasn't like a reward," he said.

Morris, however, said it does help with his evaluation when one player has all the repetitions. So, what did he see? Well, Nugent hit a couple 40-plus-yard field goals but then missed one from the same range when Morris had players encircle him and scream at him to distract him.

"I think they were in his way," Morris said. "He got a little p----- at them. I could see him back away kind of angry."

"They can be all over me, but if you get close to the motion, I kind of hit somebody at the end," Nugent added. "But that's after the ball's gone, so I should have made it anyway. I just got it left. I should have played the wind a little bit better today. ? I've been in situations like that a few times before, not too often. It's good to have someone trying to rattle you because the harder it is out here the easier it makes it on the field at game time."

Nugent kicks while Bryant sits

The Buccaneers got in an hour-long special teams practice on Tuesday with an interesting twist. Under the Jon Gruden regime, a special teams workout meant that the players that didn?t participate on special teams didn?t have to take the field and got some time off.

Under new head coach Raheem Morris, the non-special teamers, including quarterbacks, were out on the far practice field doing some conditioning drills and sprints.

?We call it we-fense and we?re going to stick with that theme,? Morris said. ?Everybody?s got to come out here. We get some guys that do a little running and we have the guys that aren?t involved doing a little lifting.

?It?s not a day off. It?s special teams practice. It?s we-fense time. That?s what we came out to do.?

During the special teams practice, the biggest story was the kicking dual that wasn?t on Tuesday. Newcomer Mike Nugent participated in all the field goal drills while incumbent kicker Matt Bryant was held out of practice with a minor injury.

?Matt didn?t practice today. He had a little small tweak,? Morris said. ?We have a little deal with those two. Mike Nugent went today and Matt will probably handle the next one. We?re just getting ready for the big competition between the two. I?m not sure what (the injury) was exactly. I usually don?t bother kickers too much. If they say they have a tweak, they have a tweak. You never know what it is. They kind of know their bodies. When they are ready to kick they?ll kick. He wasn?t ready to kick today.?

Nugent was successful in all of his field goal attempts except for two, which were two too many for special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia.

?He missed two. I think they were 44 maybe 42 yards,? Bisaccia said. ?We weren?t happy with that. It?s a little bit of a new situation for him, but there?s no need for built-in excuses. We?d like to make all of them.?

On Nugent?s second miss, the entire team surrounded Nugent getting within feet of him and was yelling and waving their arms at him.

?Nugent?s doing fine,? Morris said. ?He?s got a powerful leg. He?s got pop to his leg. He missed the pressure field goal today when the guys got around him. I think they were in his way. He got a little pissed at him. I could see he got a little pissed at them.?

Bryant, Nugent duel for kicking job

Mike Nugent is in his first camp with the Bucs after being drafted highly by the New York Jets.

TAMPA - It's no secret pro football can often be a cold, heartless business.

The Bucs proved that in February with the release of icon Derrick Brooks, a perennial Pro Bowl linebacker who will likely breeze into the Hall of Fame.

Tough decisions are part of the job description for rookie head coach and first-year GM Mark Dominik, who will soon decide the fate of kicker Matt Bryant.

Bryant, 34, is facing fierce competition from free agent addition Mike Nugent, a mild disappointment in New York after the Jets selected him in the second round of the 2005 draft.

"To me, you judge every position on your football team by what the players are doing in 2009," said Dominik. "That's the way it has to be."

Specials teams coach Rich Bisaccia has had his eye on Nugent since the former Lou Groza Award winner set 22 records at Ohio State and kicked three field goals for the North team against Jon Gruden's staff in the 2005 Senior Bowl.

Nugent is seven years younger than Bryant and appears to have a stronger leg, but the incumbent set a franchise record with 131 points last year -- the longest season of Matt Bryant's life.

During Tuesday morning?s practice kicker Matt Bryant had a setback with his injured leg.

?Matt Bryant was the only real new one in practice today, straining his hamstring a little bit,? Morris said. ?I?m sure Matt Bryant has some concern and I?m sure his coach has some concern. We just have to get him to the game and let him kick and get him healthy and be ready to play and go out there and compete. He made all his kicks today. He kind of strained [his hamstring] and he stepped out. We just have to get him healthy.?

Morris said the Bucs were lucky to have an accomplished kicker like Mike Nugent already on the roster if Bryant?s hamstring continues to be problematic.

?Usually you don?t have two guys,? Morris said. ?Usually you?ve got to get somebody off the street to compete with him. We, as an organization are kind of in a fortunate position, but we still want to see Matt Bryant at his very best and go out and compete.

?[Nugent] has a powerful leg. He has a nice pop. He?s a great kickoff man. He?s a number two draft pick coming out of Ohio State. He?s impressive. He has great talent. Now we just have to go out there and let him kick in a game.?

Matt Bryant's hamstring a setback in his battle with Mike Nugent

When K Matt Bryant limped off the field this morning with a hamstring strain, it was a step in the wrong direction for a veteran who is trying to keep his job.

Bryant missed several days last week and was rounding into shape today by kicking well until the injury occurred.

But the Bucs have the luxury of having standout Mike Nugent, whom they signed in the spring. If Bryant can't make it back for Saturday's game at Tennessee, Nugent would get an opportunity to put some distance between himself and Bryant in this race.

Coach Raheem Morris was realistic about the situation when asked today.

"We as an organization are in kind of a fortunate position," he said. "But you still want to see Matt Bryant at his very best going out to compete."
