K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

i know he was booed when he was drafted. but i have heard very few jets fans actually complain about the selection. the vast majority seem very happy about the pick and are very excited about nuge being a jet.

i can't imagine him wearing anything but #85 though... thats going to be VERY odd.

Actually, he wasn't "booed" per se...there were a lot of audible groans and surprised looks, though.
maybe they just suck at chanting "nuuuuuge!" and need more practice? the message boards i have lurked on seem to be very happy and many were upset with those present when he was drafted.

From the Dispatch this morning...

Nugent’s first kick off mark, but he finds motivation
Saturday, April 30, 2005

After rookie Mike Nugent missed his first kick as a New York Jet and struggled with his second attempt, quarterback Chad Pennington urged him to recall the 55-yard field goal the former Buckeye made last year to give Ohio State a 24-21 win over Marshall, Pennington’s alma mater.

Nugent made it.

The Jets’ first pick of the draft, No. 47 overall in the second round, Nugent is now the incumbent after veteran Doug Brien was released Thursday.

As the Jets opened minicamp yesterday, Nugent lined up for his first kick with cameras clicking.

The snap from James Dearth was bad, and the 43-yard attempt was short and wide right. The next kick hit the crossbar and went over. He finished 4 of 6 on the day. Never before has a Jets kicker been so highly scrutinized at a minicamp.

"The better guys are the ones where pressure brings out the best in them," Nugent said. "That’s the kind of kicker I try to be."
