K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

I was telling a friend over the winter after watching the playoffs that the Jets would probably take Nugent with their first pick which happened to be in the second round. I will say this, the Vikings were pissed they missed him two picks later so he was definitely going in the second round. I hate to be rude but I am tired of the talking heads and gurus saying what an asinine move it is to take a kicker. Excuse me, but a kicker like Nugent comes around once in a blue moon and watching the NFL play tressel ball every week with games being decided by 3 points or less regularly I would think that most would get it. Sure there are plenty of kickers on the free agency market available. Just ask the Jets they just let one go last year. Now who here wants that kicker over Nugs?? :oh: :io:

Can't believe the Jets fans were booing that pick, do they not remember their playoff loss to Pittsburgh? 2 missed FG's with the game tied, if either of them goes in then Jets advance to take on the Patriots, and there's no doubt in my mind that Nugent would've made them.

I have to admit that if I were an owner of an NFL team (and we're all thankful that I'm not), I would not pick a kicker until the third round. Unless, maybe, he can kick 75-yard field goals. But maybe, if the former Jets kicker is as bad as you all say he is, I would change my mind.

So, when I said anything before 3rd round for a kicker wasn't going to happen, I was wrong. Again, let's all be glad I'm not in charge of draft picks for any team. Except maybe I should pick the Ravens' picks. They would be so bad it would be awesome!

That just goes to show you moronic the New York fans are, Nuge would have hit both of those no problem.

I think its hilarious when teams "fans" boo their picks. Remember a few years ago when Philadelphia booed their pick? I can't remember who the pick was. Oh yeah - some guy named "McNabb." I haven't heard much about this guy. Is he still playing?

If I'm an NFL owner/GM, I know I'm looking for the next Anderson who I can have on my roster for 15 - 20 years. With the average margin in an NFL game being under 3 points, the kickers importance is elevated. It's not a coincidence that last years two Super Bowl teams were the two who happened to have the best kickers, Vinateri and Akers. Heck, without Vinateri (or someone comparable), the Pats not only wouldn't have won three Super Bowls, they might not have even appeared in at least one of them.

A single FG, or even PAT, can make or break a season. The Jets lost to the Steelers on two missed FGs. What about the Vikings a few years ago ... the Saints missed PAT after their Cal-esque kickoff return scramble ... Scott Norwood?

IMHO, the undervaluing of kickers is the most foolish thing amongst NFL franchises. I'm thinking of some of the most consistant teams in recent memory, and all of them have ZERO questions regarding their FG units: Vinetari, Akers, Vanderjagt, Stover, Elam ...

ESPN's Bruce Feldman, quite possibly the biggest Miami apologist on the planet, even praised Nugent in his blog yesterday, listing Nuge at #5 in his 10 most important draft picks of 2005:

Mike Nugent, Jets, second: Best college kicker of his generation, he will win three games for the Jets as a rookie.

The other thing that you have to keep in mind is that people in the New York/New Jersey area don't watch college football. They only watch pro football. I mean, who do they root for? Syracuse? Rutgers?

I guarentee that they boo'd him based soley on him being a kicker. There's a distinct possibility that all the Jets fans that were seen on the live telecast booing the pick have NEVER seen him kick before, with the exception of the one guy in the front row saying, "Alright, I'll take him." They don't know how athletic he is (even tackling the player he kicked the ball to), how dedicated he is to his craft and his team, and how accurate and strong his leg is. He might not boom the ball out of the end zone anymore, but he will be in the league for 15+ years, guaranteed.

With that being said, I would have LOVED to have seen both Dustin and Nuge on the Vikes. If he had gone to them, there would not be any of this "controversy" over picking a kicker in the 2nd round or anything. He would be greatly appreciated in Minnesota, not only because they need and wanted Nuge, but because they ACTUALLY know how good this kid is, being in the Big Ten and all! Just because Jets fans are uneducated on the essence known as NUGE, we have to deal with all of this stupid media hoopla. They should be kissing his feet right now, because now they can win the close ones with a guaranteed "closer".

The Jets just drafted a future Hall of Famer. They should be thrilled with this kind of reliability. All their offense has to do is get passed the 50 yard line. The only way I could have been more happy for him is if he went in the first round (which he should have).

To be perfectly honest, I feel a bit sorry for Nuge to be going to the Jets. I get the feeling that the Jets fans will be all over him the first time he misses a field goal. They seem to take their drafts pretty serously and don't seem to have any patience for early picks that don't pan out immediately. (see Kyle Brady) Hopefully he can win them over early on and not have to deal with too much.

Yeah- But its not like he's replacing any sort of Legend.

That doesn't matter to those Jets "fans". What matters to them is that the Jets "burned" their very first pick (for all intents and purposes a first round pick) on a kicker.

Well... he might take the heat in a game or two... but... we know how good he is, so... I mean... the first one he nails from 55 to win one... it goes from "burned" to "wise investment"

The only concern I have with "burned" is if the Jets suck and there is backlash at mgmnt for taking a kicker who can't win them games when you lose 28-9... but I doubt Nugent will let that bother him...

If the Jets would have had a 1st-rounder, their fans wouldn't have reacted much. What's interesting is that Doug Brien didn't suck last year, but the critical playoff miss makes teams almost have to change kickers. Nuge does have a stronger leg so they'll be able to try more 50+ kicks.
