Doug Brien knew his career with the Jets was over when the team picked a kicker in the second round of the NFL draft Saturday.
Yet he hopes to continue his career once he is released June 2. He also had some words of caution for the Jets' new find, Mike Nugent.
"Kicking in the NFL, in the Meadowlands, it's a whole different thing," Brien said. "I guess they think they've found their guy."
Brien said by telephone from his Bay Area home last night that the Jets have given his agent permission to talk to other teams and that Minnesota has shown interest. However, for salary-cap purposes, the Jets won't release him until June.
Brien confirmed that coach Herman Edwards assured him after last season that he would be given another chance to kick for the Jets.
"I'm coming to New York to pick up my stuff tomorrow, and that's my future with them," the beleaguered place-kicker said. "I guess this is probably the best way. I just hope I get a chance to redeem myself."
Brien pointed out correctly that he had two fine seasons with the Jets. That was until he missed potential game-winning field goals of 47 and 43 yards in the last two minutes of regulation in a divisional playoff game at Pittsburgh in January. The Jets lost on a field goal in overtime.
"I made a mistake, and it came in a big game," Brien said. "Any time I've had problems in my career, I've always worked hard to come back."
Asked if he could have returned to the Jets and overcome the ill will against him, Brien said: "I think it would have been hard, but I was preparing myself."
Brien converted 51 of 61 (84 percent) of his regular-season field-goal attempts over his two years with the Jets. He kicked a 28-yarder in overtime to beat the Chargers in San Diego the week before the failure in Pittsburgh that sealed his doom as a Jet. He made 57 of 58 extra points during the regular season.
Nugent, the 23-year-old kicker the Jets chose with their first pick in the draft, had an 82 percent success rate kicking field goals for Ohio State. Seven of his 16 misses occurred as a freshman.
Brien, 34, remembered how he felt when the 49ers drafted him in the third round in 1994.
"I was young and figured I'd spend the next 10 years with the 49ers," said Brien, who lasted less than two seasons in San Francisco and has been with five teams since. "I know he's a great kid, but it's simply not as simple as it might seem."
Brien said he's had a chance to clear his head by spending time with his wife and two young kids in California. People don't boo him on the streets of Oakland.
"Out here, I'm not a kicker," Brien said. "Out here with my friends, I'm just Doug."
I'm a big JETS fan and Brien WAS a good kicker but some people need to learn how to let go. That is just what the JETS did in picking up Nugent now it is Brien's turn. I'm sure he will be eating his words this year when NUGE make a couple of deep ones to help us on our way to the Super Bowl.:) (Hopefully)Oneshot said:Oh, the rantings of a bitter man.
Was Brien ever a proven leader and team captain? Did Brien ever nail 55 yarders in the final 2 seconds of a game to clinch the win? Was Brien ever named his team's MVP? Did you ever hear BRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENN being screamed by 100,000 raving lunatic fans?
It's just a sad thing when he comes down on a 19 year old's carreer like that.
