NFL NOTES
Nugent eager to stretch his leg

Jets not giving former OSU kicker chances for long field goals

By Karen Crouse
New York Times

Late in the third quarter Sunday at Dolphins Stadium, the Jets drove to the Miami 30-yard line, where they faced third-and-13. According to the numbers that Mike Westhoff, the special-teams coach, had fed coach Herman Edwards after gauging placekicker Mike Nugent's performance during pregame warm-ups, the Jets were in Nugent's field-goal range.

Then left tackle Adrian Jones twitched at the line and was called for a false start. Just like that, Nugent's foot was taken out of play. The 5-yard penalty moved the Jets out of his range, in the estimation of Westhoff.

After Brooks Bollinger threw an incomplete pass, Nugent trotted onto the field, but it was not to attempt a 53-yard field goal to add to the Jets' 17-10 lead.

Edwards instructed Nugent to hit a pooch punt, which he did without complaint.

Edwards said Monday that he was well aware of Nugent's burning desire to show everybody that he could convert a field goal of more than 50 yards.

"Absolutely, I know that's something he wants to do," Edwards said, "and we had a chance in that game." Jones' false start "wiped some points off the board for us," he said.

Nugent, a Centerville High School graduate, made eight field goals of 50 yards or more during his four-year career at Ohio State, but he is 0-for-2 from that range in his first year as a pro.

His confidence has clearly swelled since the most recent of those misses, a 53-yarder that could have won the game in the final seconds against the New Orleans Saints on Nov. 27.

He has not missed a field-goal attempt in the past three games.

Nugent said after Sunday's game that he did not try to persuade Edwards and Westhoff to let him try the field goal.

"If anything, I've got to do my job lobbying in practice," said Nugent, who is 7-for-7 in December.

Since going 0-for-2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 9, Nugent has converted 15-of-17 attempts, missing a 51-yarder against San Diego and falling a yard short on the late attempt against New Orleans.

He was 2-for-2 Sunday. He lined up for three field goals, but did not get to kick a 21-yard attempt in the second quarter because of a low snap that holder Ben Graham fumbled away.

"Maybe the fact that I'm 0-for-2 on 50-yard-plus field goals might play into that a little bit," Nugent said of the coaches' decision. "One of the things I have to do during the week is make sure they think we can hit a field goal like that."

Edwards said that if the Jets had been driving toward the other goal post, the decision would have probably been different because of the wind.

"The other way we were good with him trying from that distance," he said.

Regardless of whether Nugent would have made the long field goal, three points wouldn't have been enough, as the Jets went on to lose, 24-20, and fall to 3-11.

yes the ball is different in the nfl and nuge is in his rookie year. but there is no way on earth you can emphasize enough how important the long snapper and holder are. i can't count the number of times the holder (his name currently eludes me) made absolutely unbelieveable plays in catching bad snaps putting the ball right where it was supposed to be exactly when it was supposed to be there and nuge didn't have to break stride. if the ball wasn't there, he just went through his steps and kicked no matter what with full faith that the ball WOULD be there regardless of what happened with the snap. when you don't have that kind of trust, it makes the transition that much more difficult.

if you are talking about while nuge was at osu his holders were Andy Groom, BJ Sander, and Kyle Turano

The Jets suck only 18 TD's, Nuge is the least of their problems..when you cant score FG misses are magnified..I think Nuge will be fine hat first year is a big transition..Kaeding missed kicks last year that he makes this year.
Actually Nugent is 21/21 on extra points this season, not 18/18...and the Jets also went for two once this season. So I believe they scored 22 Touchdowns. Still really pathetic...(still worst scoring offense in the NFL) but not near as pathetic as 18. That would just be gross.
