K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

I'm gonna do something a little different and compare Nuge to a professional athlete.

Living in the Cleveland area and being a Tribe fan, I've had the incredible pleasure of getting to watch Omar Vizquel play SS here for the past 11 years. Now, I'll probably spend the rest of my life waiting to see another player this great try to step in and fill his shoes. The thing is, it will never happen.

Mike Nugent, in TOSU lore will probably go down the same way. Guys like Omar and Nuge are those rare players who's greatness will only be amplified over the years. 25 years from now, we'll all still be talking about Nuge. He will be the "measuring stick" for TOSU kickers for many, many years to come, and we'll only appreciate his greatness more and more as the years go by.

I'll put it this way in how Nuge will go down. It is rare when you can take a team like TOSU and clearly call a single player the "greatest" that ever played his position here, and WITHOUT debate. Up until this year, I could only put two players into that category.

Archie Griffin- Greatest RB in TOSU history- NO DEBATE
Jack Tatum- Greatest DB in TOSU history- NO DEBATE

Add Mike Nugent to the list:
Greatest Kicker in TOSU history- NO DEBATE. Peace.

You can cross the Chargers off that list. They spent a pick last year on Kaeding, and despite missing that playoff kick, he still had a solid season. No way they can justify using a pick on Nuge.

The Vikes and Jets are two prime candidates to pick Nuge though. Being playoff teams, they don't have too many holes to fill. Also, by sitting in the bottom half of the draft, it's easier for them to justify taking a kicker in an earlier round. Minnesota would be a great opportunity, because he'd get to play in a dome. He'd have a legit shot at breaking the FG distance record playing there. New York would also be a great opportunity for him off the field. He could become a star there. The first true "star" kicker ever.

When fellow old-schooler Dubs proclaims Nuge as the best Buckeye kicker ever, then you can pretty much bank it. I remember after the 2002 season or so, there was a debate over on Bustnuts as to how good Nuge was. Dubs was fairly adamant about either Tom Klaban or Vlade Janakievski (I'm fairly sure it was one of those two) being the best kicker, and that Nuge still had a long way to go to even be put in the same category as whichever of the two he had picked. Now for him to say that not only is Nuge worthy of being in that category, but that Nuge is in his own category, should ring true as to how good Nuge truly is. Dubs has seen every kicker over a span of almost four decades, and is about the best judge of who is the one with the Golden Foot.

Only K going in the 1st round that I can recall is Sebastian Janokowski going to the Raiders, so it is a stretch that Nuge will go round 1, but he is a better K than Jano was and kickers are getting scarce around the league.

Colts also might look at him, they're sick of Vanderjagt and might release the guy.

I think that from a fans standpoint, the Marshall game this year showed us all what Nuge was all about, and from a coaches standpoint as well. When TOSU got the ball back, the offense, as I saw it, was pretty much "setting up" for a 55 yard field goal attempt. As stupid as that may sound, I think that Tressel had that in mind, cross the 40 and put the game on Mike's foot.

Now, think about this, to those who watched the game. When NUge took the field, was there any other kicker in TOSU history that you would have preferred being out there other than him. AND, think about this also, did any of you really have any other expectation other than seeing that ball fly through the uprights with plenty of distance to spare??

Spielman always says that the longer it's been since he played, the better he was. I believe that the legend of Nuge will continue to grow, just like Spielman's did/does. When a great Buckeye like these guys come through, we appreciate them more and more as the years pass, rather than forgetting about them, like so many other places do.

I went at Marion where we had 1000 people (I was 10th in line...yes, I am a geek). I had as much fun in line talking to fellow buckeye fans as I did talking to Nuge while he signed my poster!
