K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

BuckeyeBill73 said:
I think his closest competitor for the Groza was Payne from BYU. But Payne missed 2 FGs today, so I think Nuge has it wrapped up.

:groove: Go Nuge! You definitely deserve it and will be sorely missed next year! (I'm assuming his replacement will be Skeete or Pettrey -- but let's not think about that!)

I've tried to keep an accurate running total on his stats under the "Mike Nugent, best kicker ever?" thread.

Unless I'm way off he needs 7 to tie the record and 8 to break it.

K Mike Nugent (official thread)

I may have missed this somewhere because I didn't get to the boards till after I sobered up on Sunday, but for any of you that were at the game, how loud was the NUuuuuggeeeeee roar when he was announced for the final time on Saturday? I was hoping the crowd wouldn't stop cheering for him for a good 5 minutes.

Well...it was as loud as ever...but it wasn't very long because he was the last to be announced, and then it was onto The Game so everyone just started normal cheers again.

I miss Nuge already. An old man that has had the same seats for years, as my dad and I have, joked about Nuge with me 3 years ago when he had his bad Freshman year because I had told him that I went to high school with Hawk and Nugent. Then throughout the years he would always talk to me about how good Nugent had gotten and how he went from nothing to All-American. After Nugent's last field goal, I turned around and said to him, "That's probably the last time we get to see him ever kick a field goal." And he said, "Yeah...he's come a long way. I can't believe he's already leaving. We are going to miss him."

It was just kind of bitter sweet. The scUM game is always bitter sweet because you see your favorite guys leaving. Nugent is a little extra special for me since we are both from Centerville. I'll never forget the Marshall game. That turned Nugent into a hero. Before he was just a star...then he became a hero.

Nice to see a Centerville native being captian of OSU. And there is no doubt next year we will have another Centerville captain. I mean...is there anybody on the team more fit to be captian next year than A.J. Hawk?

It was a pretty incredible cheer however. I think Fraser was before him (can't remember), and while that guy got a loud cheer halfway thru his "time" the crowd began to erupt for Nugent. It was sad that we had to start the game soon after, because I bet the cheer would have lasted for some time.

I don't know that any player will ever be as irreplaceable as Nugent. Sure players like Eddie George cannot be matched, but he is only on one side of the ball. Nugent not only provides the greatest clutch kicker ever at OSU, but he prevents kick returns and ensures poor field position to start the game. How many great players (Elway) have finished the game extremely well leaving only seconds on the clock, only to have a kick returner erase their efforts without facing the team's starting defense?

Nuge Groza Finalist

Tyler Jones of Boise State, Mike Nugent of Ohio State, and Andrew Wellock of Eastern Michigan have been selected as finalists for the 2004 Lou Groza.

I don't think there's any question who's gonna win this award.
