K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

I don't see him missing more than 2 more kicks the rest of the year. You have to remember he's averaging 3 attempts per game and with the Big Ten schedule and having more defensive struggles, I see this number staying right there. With 8 games left (including the bowl game), that's 24 more attempts...I'll leave it at 20 to stay a bit conservative. I could see 17 or 18 out of 20 for sure. 20 for 20 is what I'm really hoping for, but that would be just phenomonal considering the number of attempts longer than 40 yards. I know he can make any kick but even I, as a biased fan of his, can still see 2 more misses or so. But I definitely do not see him missing another clutch kick, that was a good ball he hit against NW, just didn't draw back in. He'll use that as motivation for the next big kick (probably this weekend).

You are definitely correct about his misses coming from the right hash. Both his misses this year have been balls he thought were perfect, they just never drew back in like they are supposed to. It might have been due to some wind he didn't factor in, or something completely different. The good thing to know is that he's not letting the miss against Northwestern play in his head and he is looking forward to the next kick he has in a pressure situation. And oh yeah, I would have to say he is the greatest OSU kicker ever.

When kickers have problems from on hash or another.. it usually has to do with them being uncomfortable with his targeting....

If your natural ball with no wind moves right to left... maybe on a 35 yoard field goal, from the center of the field, your target is the right upright... (Nuges ball usually doesn't move that much)

But the ball actually moves in a banana shape...not straight then right... so from different parts of the field you have to visualize the path the ball is going to take.. and it a little bit of feel is involved... and for some reason he just doesn't seem comfortable with the feel of being over there and wants to start his kicks farther right than he needs to...

He hits them all very nicely though...

I'm really not sure what the real reason is...I don't think it has to do with being uncomfortable because he's done this a thousand times from all over the field. The balls are kicked well which is a good sign, it's just a random push that he seems to be able to fix right away. I would almost guarantee the next kick he has from the right hash is right down the middle. It's funny these days that it's a huge deal when he misses one kick...a little different from the days as a freshman. He knows what he has to do and he knows just how important to the team he is. Like I said before, he'll pick back up this week the same way he always has....full of confidence and making all the kicks.

When you push though.. usually its because you're trying to overcompensate for something or overthink something...

Think of when you do something stupid with your golf swing that you don't normally do.. its usually because you're of thinking shot you've had difficulty with in the past... But you miss the shot.. you cna normally drop a ball right away and make a good one... I wouldn't worry about Nuge.

Show me any college kicker, or pro for that matter, ever, that didn't miss a kick in three years of starting. Sheesh, the kid's kicking nearly 90% since the start of his sophomore year and holds the school record for consecutive FGs.

(edit) As of the Northwestern game, he is 51 of 59 (86.4%) since the start of the 2002 season, including 5 of 6 from 50+. He is also 93 of 94 in XP since then. For his career, he's 58 of 73 (79.4%) and 116 of 119 in XP.

not only will he play on sundays, he will go in the first round. id put money on it.
Even as biased as I am, I know he won't go in the first round. Janikowski was taken in the first round and I think Oakland know it might have been a mistake. Look at other great kickers like Elam (3rd round) and Kaeding (3rd round). Mel Kiper said Nuge would probably be a solid second round pick. But the first round might not ever come around again for a kicker....IMO

Collegefootballnews made an all-baseball team from college football players in the spirit of the world series. Nuge made the list...

Relief Pitcher – Mike Nugent (PK, Mike Nugent) – Ah, the placekicker. What other position, in football, most resembles the closer, in baseball? For the better part of three years, the Buckeyes have depended on Mr. Clutch to get the final three outs and save the game (kick the game-winning field goal), and, for the duration of those four years, Nugent has delivered. When it’s the bottom of the ninth and you need to walk off the diamond with a ‘W’ (or when you’re tied or down by less than three points with only seconds remaining), there’s no one more dependable than the Buckeyes’ “closer”..

In the spirit of election day I recounted and found that I had missed Nuge's 1 whole point in the offensive explosion at Iowa.

So YTD as of 10/23's game

Nuge 60 pts (254 for career prior to 04)= 314 career points
Pete Johnson = 348 career points

So Mike Nugent needs 34 points to tie # 1 and 35 to break it. Only 4 games left and needs 9 ppg vs some very stout D's. It will be close. If we somehow make a bowl I bet he makes it.

They're still trying to find a way to stop him...
