Juniors leaving early - speculation thread

If Whitner left, its going to be Na'il Diggs all over again... (Ie a guy who was ready for the NFL, but could have been moved up 2 or 3 rounds the next year, and it cost him a lot of $)

First, another year will help him get better....

Second, safety isn't a premium position... so you lets say you're the 3 or 4th best Safety to come out (I have no idea what Donte would be)... You could be drafted in the 2nd round, or the 5th. Not like being th 4th best Defensive Tackle...

Anyway... unless the advisory people come back and say he's a 2nd round lock, I think he could stay.

as on osu fan, i want whitner to stay, obviously.

but as a bengals fan, i know this. Donte would be starting THIS year for the bengals...... they need another safety BAD (madieu williams out for the year), and I would LOVE it if they drafted donte in the second round this year if he came out....

After reading Ashton's incredible bio I think he values his education too much to leave early. What I've heard of Donte is that he loves the college experience and really needs one more "lights out" year to be ready for the pros. Santonio has already called this a "money year" and if he's projected high in the draft he's outta here.. he's got a family to support.

great point.. this is exactly what happened to mike doss. AA selection according to everyone and a major player around campus/on the field and was still taken in the second round. if it happened to him, it could definitely happen to anyone

Maybe methomps can answer this, but would Darnell Bing leave USC early? He'd probably be behind Michael Huff (Texas) and Greg Blue (Georgia), but probably about even if not slightly ahead of Harper (Alabama) and Salley (Ohio State) at safety.

RE: 2005 players leaving for the pros

I can't believe you guys think this many players will leave early - I mean 2005 is alot!
I would think more like 30 or 40 players total would leave early.
you guys didn't learn from last year, when you thought 2004 players would go pro early, and it was only about 40. I mean, you were off by 1,964!
And this year you pick an even higher number than last year! I can't make the connection.
I'm going to call Mr Obvious and see what he thinks....

Youboty got burned all day, it was disguisting. He played the run well, but Ellerson and Wheelwright both had their way with him, I havent seen an OSU corner play that bad in quite a while, hopefully its just because of an injury.

Between today and mid-January is a period where three big things happen:

1. Bowls
2. Coaching carousel
3. Underclassmen declare for the NFL

I thought it'd be worthwhile to start a thread tracking and predicting which draft-eligible juniors and sophomores will make the leap.

Leaving
Ray Edwards, DE Purdue

Staying
Fred Davis, TE USC

Here are the top prospects from DraftDaddy.com:

QB Brady Quinn - Notre Dame
QB Vince Young - Texas
QB Omar Jacobs - Bowling Green
QB Drew Stanton - Michigan State
RB Reggie Bush - USC
RB Lendale White - USC
RB Lorenzo Booker - Florida State
RB Lawrence Maroney - Minnesota
RB Maurice Drew - UCLA
WR Santonio Holmes - Ohio State
WR Steve Smith - USC
WR Jason Hill - Washington State
TE Leonard Pope- Georgia
TE Joe Newton - Oregon State
TE Vernon Davis - Maryland
OT Joe Thomas - Wisconsin
OT Winston Justice - USC
OT Doug Free - Northern Illinois

DE Mario Williams - NC State
DE Adam Carriker - Nebraska
DE Quentin Moses - Georgia
DE Ray Edwards - Purdue GONE
DE/LB Lamar Woodley - Michigan
DT Haloti Ngata - Oregon
DT John McCargo - NC STATE
LB Ahmad Brooks - Virginia
LB Ernie Sims - Florida State
LB Paul Posluszny - Penn State
CB Devin Hester - Miami

Just about any such discussion has to start with USC, and they're the only school I know anything about on this subject, so here are my opinions (in order of where I think they'd go in the draft if they left):

1. Reggie Bush, RB: Gone! (99%)

2. Darnell Bing, SS: It's been an expectation the entire year that this was his last season. (95%)

3. Winston Justice, OT: He struggled a lot this year, mostly due to trying to get back into the flow of football after a year off. He's an absolute physical freak (though not size-wise) and especially quick, and he will be tried out at LT in the NFL (currently protects Leinart's blindside at RT). He could use another year of seasoning, but he's still a 1st round prospect this year. (85%)

3. Lendale White, RB: Before this morning, I would've said he was gone (100% as opposed to Bush's 99%). However, he was very adament yesterday that he is returning. This article quotes him several times. It requires registration, but bugmenot.com provided this email/password combo that works:
email: [email protected]
password: kissit

5. Steve Smith, WR: I think Smith wants to go. I don't think he's ready, but with the loss of Leinart and the emergence of phenom WR Patrick Turner, I think Smith is gone. (80%)

Nobody else is above a 1% chance in my mind.
