How are we allowing this guy inside "The Fence"?

Scramble the fighters at Don Scott and shoot that bad boy down.

Senior Jordan Hicks talks with former Chicago Bear linebacker Dick Butkus after receiving the Dick Butkus Award for being the top linebacker in the country Wednesday Dec. 9, 2009, at Lakota West High School. Hicks was also suprised by the presence of his senior teammates, family and coaches while receiving the prestigious award.

WEST CHESTER TWP. - Add another piece of hardware to Jordan Hicks' resume.

The Lakota West High senior outside linebacker was given the Butkus Award - which honors the nation's top high school linebacker - on Wednesday morning, Dec. 9, at West.

And he was handed the Butkus Award trophy by NFL legend Dick Butkus himself.

"It's great," Hicks said. "I was surprised, which made it even better. It feels good to be noticed like this. I've been working for it for a long time, and it's finally coming."

...
"I'm ready to move on to the next step in my recruiting process," Hicks said.

That next step, he said, is "hopefully making a decision soon," which could come at the end of this month or in early January.

Asked if Alabama and USC are still in the mix, Hicks said: "Alabama still is. USC, I'm not sure."

Mack Brown just got a raise to $5,000,000 a year, indicating he might stick around for a little while. Muschamp, the "head coach in waiting" might have to wait a bit longer than he thought and may look around. Do we know whether this kid is a Mack Brown fan, Muschamp fan or just a Texas fan? ...

I don't know whether that makes anything better for us or not, but it would be a shame to lose him out of state.

He grew up a Texas fan. Everything I've read indicates he's interested in the school more than the coach.

Hicks receives Butkus Award: NFL legend Dick Butkus was in West Chester on Wednesday to present his award to West Chester Lakota West senior linebacker Jordan Hicks. The Butkus Award is presented to the best high school, college and pro linebacker each season. Hicks is just the second high school linebacker to win the award. "I like the way he hits," Butkus told the Pulse Journal. "He really hits people. I?m surprised. He?s kind of lanky, so he?s going to be able to fill out. He?s going to be a stud and keep his speed." Hicks, who is undecided on a college choice, was scheduled to take an official visit to Florida last weekend.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

AND THEN THERE WERE THREE: Linebacker Jordan Hicks of West Chester Lakota West, the No. 2 prospect in the country according to ESPNU, has narrowed his college choices to Ohio State, Florida and Texas. (Samantha Grier, Hamilton (Ohio) Journal-News)
Hicks' resume

Jordan Hicks, a 6-foot-2, 220 pound linebacker prospect from West Chester (Lakota West), has already compiled some impressive credentials:

/// 2009 Butkus Award winner, signifying the outstanding high school linebacker in the nation.

/// The GatorAde defensive player of the year in Ohio

/// Considered the No. 2 overall prospect in the country by ESPNU, behind defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat of Plano, Texas.

/// Ranked No. 12 overall by Rivals.com, but No. 1 at outside linebacker.

/// Will play in the Under Armour All-America game Jan. 2 in Orlando, Fla.

It remains to be seen whether Jordan Hicks will become an All-American linebacker on the next level, though in the arms race that is major college football recruiting, three powers that be ? Ohio State, Texas and Florida ? appear to be banking on it.

The senior from Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio, is the focal point of an intense wooing battle in these last two months of the 2010 recruiting season. He reportedly has whittled what was a tree limb full of narrowed scholarship offers from all over the country down to the three listed above.

In the past week, Hicks has played host to visits from Florida coach Urban Meyer, Texas coach Mack Brown and Ohio State's Jim Tressel.

And just for certification of Hicks' credentials, there was the surprise drop-in visit from former All-American and All-Pro linebacker Dick Butkus on Dec. 9. Hicks already knew he was a finalist for the high school version of the Butkus Award, which the namesake also bestows on one deserving college player and on one deserving NFL linebacker each year. Butkus dropped by to let Hicks know he was this year's winner.

"The kid's got to be the best guy on the field and got to be one of the best off the field, and that's what Jordan is," Butkus told the Hamilton Journal-News after handing Hicks the trophy. "It's unbelievable the more we find out about him. This guy's the real deal."

But a fellow player doesn't win something like the Butkus Award and become one of the elite college football prospects in the country ? ESPNU ranks him No. 2 overall, Rivals.com has him No. 12 ? just because he's a great guy.

"He's a great football player; he's a very good student; he's the whole package," said Bucknuts veteran recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic, who has lists Hicks No. 1 in the state in Ohio Football Recruiting News. "He's got good size, he runs well."

Butkus noticed.

"He really hits people," Butkus told the Journal-News. "I'm surprised. He's kind of lanky, so he's going to be able to fill out. He's going to be as stud and keep his speed."

Which is what Kurelic was alluding to in the first place.

"The bottom line, he's a difference-maker," Kurelice said. "That's why almost every major college program out there offered him a scholarship."

Although there's probably no such thing as a player we "need to get" in this recruiting class, there is no player I want more in this class than Jordan Hicks. His academics, community service and pure athletic ability all spell "star" to me. I'll enjoy watching him wherever he goes, but it'll be a lot more fun if he's a Buckeye.
