Hicks' resume
Jordan Hicks, a 6-foot-2, 220 pound linebacker prospect from West Chester (Lakota West), has already compiled some impressive credentials:
/// 2009 Butkus Award winner, signifying the outstanding high school linebacker in the nation.
/// The GatorAde defensive player of the year in Ohio
/// Considered the No. 2 overall prospect in the country by ESPNU, behind defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat of Plano, Texas.
/// Ranked No. 12 overall by Rivals.com, but No. 1 at outside linebacker.
/// Will play in the Under Armour All-America game Jan. 2 in Orlando, Fla.
It remains to be seen whether Jordan Hicks will become an All-American linebacker on the next level, though in the arms race that is major college football recruiting, three powers that be ? Ohio State, Texas and Florida ? appear to be banking on it.
The senior from Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio, is the focal point of an intense wooing battle in these last two months of the 2010 recruiting season. He reportedly has whittled what was a tree limb full of narrowed scholarship offers from all over the country down to the three listed above.
In the past week, Hicks has played host to visits from Florida coach Urban Meyer, Texas coach Mack Brown and Ohio State's Jim Tressel.
And just for certification of Hicks' credentials, there was the surprise drop-in visit from former All-American and All-Pro linebacker Dick Butkus on Dec. 9. Hicks already knew he was a finalist for the high school version of the Butkus Award, which the namesake also bestows on one deserving college player and on one deserving NFL linebacker each year. Butkus dropped by to let Hicks know he was this year's winner.
"The kid's got to be the best guy on the field and got to be one of the best off the field, and that's what Jordan is," Butkus told the Hamilton Journal-News after handing Hicks the trophy. "It's unbelievable the more we find out about him. This guy's the real deal."
But a fellow player doesn't win something like the Butkus Award and become one of the elite college football prospects in the country ? ESPNU ranks him No. 2 overall, Rivals.com has him No. 12 ? just because he's a great guy.
"He's a great football player; he's a very good student; he's the whole package," said Bucknuts veteran recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic, who has lists Hicks No. 1 in the state in Ohio Football Recruiting News. "He's got good size, he runs well."
Butkus noticed.
"He really hits people," Butkus told the Journal-News. "I'm surprised. He's kind of lanky, so he's going to be able to fill out. He's going to be as stud and keep his speed."
Which is what Kurelic was alluding to in the first place.
"The bottom line, he's a difference-maker," Kurelice said. "That's why almost every major college program out there offered him a scholarship."
