Johnny Manziel (unemployed)

As for whether the argument that JT did that to protect some FBI investigation (which I don't buy), the answer was simply it wasn't his fucking call to make. He didn't run the AD much less the university, and it was his job to pass that upstairs and let Gordon Gee and the university lawyers contact the FBI. Nobody has ever contended that he needed to hold some press conference the next day to disclose the e-mails.
If the FBI says, "Don't say shit", then you don't say shit...federal investigations curp-stomp trump NCAA guidelines. Not saying that Tressel was actually told to keep his yap shut by the FBI, but the idea that he actually had some sort of responsibilty to forward info up-channel--when the FBI told him not to--is laughable.

Contacting his superiors and lawyers at the university was a big no-no, yet it was OK to contact Pryor's mentor in PA?

And like you said, there is not a shred of evidence, or even hearsay, that the FBI in any way contacted JT and imposed a gag order--short of that, it wasn't his decision to make. The university lawyers and outside counsel at Vorys are quite capable of knowing how to handle that kind of information (much more so than JT) and would have had direct FBI contacts to refer to before any public/ncaa moves were made.

No, an Ohio State grad student doing an unrelated e-mail database search uncovered them and notified GS who notified Gee (only proper thing he's ever done in his life). We turned ourselves into the NCAA (that's why it was FTM and not LOIC). All yahoo did was "break" a story that was already in motion and would have been announced to the public anyways. They sped the timetable up is all.

I believe the 'unrelated e-mail database search' was a FOIA request from the University of Missouri which was butthurt about being left out of the B1G expansion, while Nebraska was included.

But I see a big difference in tOSU turning that info over, and the aTm chancellor making statements about being sure that Manziel didn't do anything wrong and making Johnny out to be a victim in the whole debacle. How in the Hell could he be sure that Manziel didn't take anything he shouldn't have?

It sucks to once again see programs that the approach of trying not to uncover anything get away with a joke of a penalty, even if the NCAA exists in order to profit off of student-athletes. The only thing good about this whole mess is that they actually made a decision before the season started.

Suitgate scandall... Bama player arriving in brand new taylored suits and magically all of these signed items appear for sale in a local suit store. Did the NCAA even ask the question?

Aren't we all just waiting for the NCAA to say that every Alabama player that's done an appearance at T-Town Menswear to each receive a half-game suspension because they all should have realized that the business was profiting from them?

Remind me to stop trying to sell air conditioners in Hell when that happens.

We get it, ORD. Let's not do this all over again. Please. Football season is close. So close.

I'll check that out in a few, Mali. I gotta believe wealth played a role if not race. Nevehr had to worry about Pryor lawyering up.

I gotta believe there was some undue influence on the NCAA with the Football's parents threatening lawsuit and their deep pockets. Hate to see race being called into play on this issue in the article. How long before Bam weighs in from his current vacation spot....

Yeah, it's certainly hard to say it was THE factor, but it also certainly felt like JM got the "benefit of the doubt" that other student athletes did... and there may be a race/privilege factor to that.

I think the biggest factor was the fact that the family had oil money, so he could be seen running around spending money on sporting events and going to parties and the NCAA couldn't make an assumption that he came into that money by accepting impermissible benefits.

Agreed... but looking deeper you can see that the "they have oil money" story isn't as simple as it seems.

But, who questioned those initial assumptions? Not me, for one...

Now Johnny Football signs over 4,400 autographs out of generosity.

Yeah, I got him ranked right up there with Mother Teresa, Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton, and John Paul II. I'm sure you won't find a more compassionate/caring/generous guy in all of college football. Any day now I expect him to be off to the Philippines to circumcise new babies.
