Johnny Manziel (unemployed)

My whole defense of JT in Tatgate is he was approached by an attorney who says thing are going on, but don't say anything because tat parlor is being investigated by the Feds. JT doesn't say anything to the university because if he does they report it to NCAA and blow a federal investigation. Therefore JT is now in trouble for impede ing a Federal investigation. Who you want mad at you NCAA who suspends you of Federal Government who sends you on a vacation from which you mysteriously disappear....

1.) I don't want Ohio State treating the rules like SEC schools do - even if the rules are dumb. I hold Ohio State to a higher standard.

2.) Anybody who thinks last year's team goes undefeated with Jim Bollman as its offensive coordinator needs their head examined.

I was referring to last year. Not 2011. Had the team not received the bowl ban we would have been able to silence South Bend and qualm the SEC in one swoop.

While I agree with point #1 - its becoming increasingly hard to for me to keep that stance when doing the right thing garners the most punishment. The NCAA apparently did NOT take into consideration the Universities full cooperation with their investigation. Instead of accepting our own self-imposed penalties, they brought down the hammer. Its nonsense. Always has been. While I don't mean to flog a dead horse, or sound like the State Penn people - penalties handed down to the football team never sat right with me.
Until the NCAA is revamped from the ground up or destroyed completely and replaced with a new, governing body, this type of inconsistent punishment will be the norm.

edit: In regards to State Penn... my use of the term "people" should be replaced with a more accurate ' Mutants '. I apologize for this error.

The easy solution is not rewriting the regulations but instead making interim changes to them. You can easily format a penalty chart to the rules. We have seen this done with illegal hits in the NFL, certain rules in the NBA, roid usage in MLB, etc. Each military branch is governed by its own rules for conduct and on some of these we include a penalty chart so that every person knows what punishment can be expected if you break a rule.

Just hold a committee and determine the penalties for the hot issues put it in print and send them out. Its that friggin easy. "Should any football player deemed to have a part of a profitable autograph or membrolia signing session will be (insert punishment here) for a first time offense with a value less than (insert dollar amount here). If the session is valued at (insert dollar amount here) the player will be (insert punishment here)......"

This would keep every player, school, coach, dean, president, fan, etc. in the know as to what to expect for a fairness and equality across the board.

So he's suspended for a half because he violated the "spirit of NCAA bylaws 12.5.2.1 and 12.5.2.2", which apparently means that by signing so many autographs he must have been aware that others were making money, and he's not supposed to permit others to use his name or picture.

NCAA bylaws
12.5.2.1 Advertisements and Promotions After Becoming a Student-Athlete. After becoming a student-athlete, an individual shall not be eligible for participation in intercollegiate athletics if the individual:

(a) Accepts any remuneration for or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind;

or (b) Receives remuneration for endorsing a commercial product or service through the individual’s use of such product or service.

12.5.2.2 Use of a Student-Athlete’s Name or Picture without Knowledge or Permission. If a student-athlete’s name or picture appears on commercial items (e.g., T-shirts, sweatshirts, serving trays, playing cards, posters) or is used to promote a commercial product sold by an individual or agency without the student-athlete’s knowledge or permission, the student-athlete (or the institution acting on behalf of the student-athlete) is required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics. Such steps are not required in cases in which a student-athlete’s photograph is sold by an individual or agency (e.g., private photographer, news agency) for private use.

The NCAA's lack of investigative ability and subpoena power is fully illustrated here. If they had seen the videos that Joe Schad reported seeing a few weeks ago, in one of which Manziel supposedly said that the autograph broker had better not talk about the session or Manziel wouldn't deal with him in the future, how could they reach any reasonable conclusion other than that he got some improper benefits for the autographs?

Did anyone honestly NOT see some bs slap on the wrist like this coming though?

I thought at the most he would had been suspended for Rice and Sam Houston but allowed to play vs Bama

but FOR A HALF?

Nice to see the NCAA continues to take a nothing wrong to see here approach with the SEC.

So, you have:
Cam Newton 'didn't know' what daddy was doing
Suitgate scandall... Bama player arriving in brand new taylored suits and magically all of these signed items appear for sale in a local suit store. Did the NCAA even ask the question?
Trent Richardson speeding in his brand new $45,000 SUV because the giant ass rims screwed up his speedometer... was there an investigation?
Players on video purchasing what they believed to be HGH at Bama, LSU, Auburn and Georgia... big news and a few weeks later it just poof... gone from all news.
Now Johnny Football (I just had to pay $2 to to the Manziel family to write that) signs over 4,400 autographs out of generosity.

I'm not saying ALL of these were legit, but odds are 2 or 3 our of 5 scandals would be true, particularly when there is video/photographic evidence or police reports on many of them. This is a joke.

The one that really kills me is the HGH use, that is a HUGE problem. If it gets out of hand in college these kids will feel they have to use it in order to stay competitive. I don't give a [mark may] if NFL athletes or MLB players choose to put that crap in their body. That is their career. In college most of those kids, yes even a bunch of them playing for Bama or LSU, won't be playing in the NFL. They may feel they need it in order to keep their scholly or follow their peers, and could be seriously screwing up their lives. I guess the NCAA doesn't worry about this.

SEC makes a buttload of money for the NCAA....it would be bad business to hammer all the big money makers from the conference

It's probably a longshot, but I keep wondering if Kevin Sumlin is going to either follow Manziel to an NFL job (not specifically to Manziel's team) or try to take over Notre Dame if Brian Kelly were to go to the NFL.

I don't see Sumlin being at A&M long term.

1) Johnny plays the race card on the NCAA- "you can get away with that shit against poor black boys, but don't go trying to hang my ass." -and wins.

2) When the SEC and ESPN get done destroying whatever authority the NCAA has, what will colleges do to replace it? If you think this is crazy, wait till the day when there is no NCAA. Ask yourself why it is that Purdue's teams were nicknamed the boilermakers.

3. Time to join Chicago and state that colleges are about academics and not athletics.
