Johnny Manziel (unemployed)

Do most of you really think the Aggies and Manziel deserve all this...or do you just enjoy seeing it because its about time somebody else got caught since we know so many SEC schools have gotten away with things like this and worse without any public criticism?

I dislike it all...it has nothing to do with the actual football, which is the part of this I love. There is enough exposure at all these schools now that we could just let all NCAA players make money off their own likeness, and the sport would survive and I don't think there would be any more unfair advantage to certain schools than there is now. What's the purpose anymore?

Players getting paid under the table for signing LOIs...yes dirty. Players getting paid for their autograph or their possessions...not dirty.

I'm sure some will disagree, but I feel like some of these rules are hurting the sport more than helping it.

Not getting enjoyment from this. I just want to see someone else get the shaft like we did. As it stands, they should get the same thing we did (5 games suspension) I don't think they get a bowl ban until they can prove A&M knew about this and let him play prior to the alleged signings.

New ESPiN evidents

Broker says Manziel was paid $7,500

On the videos, which the broker said were recorded without Manziel's knowledge, ESPN heard Manziel say "you never did a signing with me" and that if the broker were to tell anyone, he would refuse to deal with him again in the future. Manziel, who appeared comfortable throughout the video recordings, also said if asked, he would say he had simply been approached by various autograph seekers.

At one point, ESPN heard a broker ask Manziel if he would take additional cash to sign with special inscriptions, but Manziel declined, indicating he had done that before and it led to questions. The video does not show Manziel accepting cash, which the broker alleges happened three times. The broker told ESPN that Manziel said he wanted money for new rims for his vehicle.

Dumb as a box of rocks

The only reason I'm laughing and enjoying this is that Manziel is possibly the most unlikeable player in the history of college football. He comes from deep, Texas oil money and yet is still dumb enough to do something like this. Is that bad of me? Possibly, but I'm going to continue to let this play out and do this:

Also, why is Sumlin not getting any heat at all? He signed 31 guys last year and continues to turn a blind eye to Manziel. It baffles me.

SEC! SEC! SEC!

That's why.

Frankly, I'm SHOCKED that e!spn is running with this. They must look down at aggy as "new money" SEC.

How do you make sure there aren't people who tell kids on their visit that if they commit to ____________ then they'll be there to buy their autographs from them for thousands?
At this point...wouldn't there be an equal advantage to all schools? Obviously if somebody is selling one autograph for $1000s the there is something dirty going on. But as far as brokers who wanna make money, who are not connected with the school...they are all over...and of the player is good, then it won't matter why school he is at.

I truly feel bad for Sumlin. To date he's been one of the good guys in college football and he's earned the right to Coach in College Football's most competitive league. He doesn't deserve to deal with this [Mark May] and I'd be willing to bet he's more than willing to part ways with Manziel and start fresh.

But you don't just cut a Heisman trophy winner and it looks like the discipline surrounding his quarterback has been taken out of his hands and put into the hands of the AD.
I'd bet he's quietly hoping the NCAA makes the tough decision for him so he can begin with the transition to his next QB.

There's two issues here.

#1 Should he be able to sell his autograph (or "likeness")?
#2 Does he deserve to get punished for breaking the rules?

We can debate #1. A lot of people think he should, but there's a lot of unintended consequences in things like that.

As for #2...regardless of your feelings on #1, if he did take money for signing items, he broke the rules. He knows that selling his autograph is against the rules and he did it anyway. So yes, he deserves to be punished.
I agree that he broke the rules. Unless the school had knowledge, they don't deserve punishment. They are getting it anyway cuz he's their best player. But I just feel like this, and the rules, is hurting college football.

There is no doubt he's done some stupid things...and if he broke rules he deserves the consequences that he knew were there to begin with. But I do feel bad for the Aggie fans. They didnt ask for this, and now this whole season could suck for them. In the end it's about the student athletes and the fans...and I hate when either gets the shaft.

I agree with you... but the "had knowledge" thing didn't help Southern Cal, who were found responsible because they "should have known". Also, SC's report included comments to the effect that "high profile athletes require high profile monitoring".

One thing I find ironic is that the "brokers" are speaking on condition of anonymity and refuse to cooperate with the NCAA...but if you look on e-bay, there are basically 2 people with Manziel stuff listed, and it's a bunch of it. Real smooth there, chief(s)

You mean you think that Manziel or someone else would be making as much at Utah, Washington State, or Boise State as he [strike]does[/strike] would at TAMU? Just think how much he'd make at Ohio State if it were allowed...

The working theory being concoted between War Eagle & Aggie is that 'Bama is secretly pushing this story from behind the scenes (and the Longhorns are probably connected too, but they can't prove it).

No, I'm not kidding.

This. The autograph of a touted freshman like Pryor or Brax would be worth more before they stepped on the field than a three year starting QB breaking NCAA records at Hawaii or Boise State.
