Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

From today's presser:

COACH TRESSEL: "I'm not surprised he's taken the ball and run with it because the way he prepares and he's a talented kid. And, yes, we did need to see it. I think sometimes when you're knighted before you're deserving it works against you. I think Todd, not unlike the quarterback at Wisconsin, had to go and earn and emerge as the guy. I think that's most respected by your teammates. Sometimes the old axiom, some guys have to prove they can't, some guys have to prove they can, I think you gain the greatest amount of confidence from your teammates when you're one of the guys that has to prove he can."

Nice dig at Ntre Ame and Claussen, and an incredibly funny one at that. :)

Yes. What did that quote have to do with Notre Dame?!
Nothing at all. Although it certainly could apply to the Pickle...who is in a pickle because much was annointed to him before he ever had a chance to prove it.

But I'm quite certain JT wasn't digging at him...that's not JTs style. Maybe Spurrier's...not but JT.

I think one of the simpler, yet most impacting, things Tressel has done and is continuing to do is to cultivate to sense of pride in being an Ohioan and a Buckeye. He has built and maintained relationships with high school programs throughout the state, and I think we'll see more and more recruits like Todd Boeckman ("I've always wanted to play for the Buckeyes") and fewer turncoats (Burgess, Crable, etc.)...

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but he's comparing earning a position like Boeckman earned, to some other team's situation of knighting a kid, which I have never seen before the Jimmy Claussen situation, and then having it come back to backfire on the team because you have to earn a team's respect. Those things just aren't given out. You would have to have a basis of comparison to even compare the two situations. Who else would fit the comparison more than what is going on at ND?

What's even better is that more often than not, the Boeckmans turn out better than the turncoats.

Intentionally? Maybe not. But he did describe the crux of ND's problems in one sentence.
If there was any innuendo in JT's comment, I'm inclined to think it was directed at his own team, not someone elses. He called his own team and coaching staff out for mailing it in this past January. 41-14 is this seasons motto. Nobody is resting on their laurels. They're not allowed to anymore. You don't win national championships for beating Michigan.

If that was JT commenting on the situation at another program, it would be a precedent setting first.

Tressel only knows anything about two football teams, his and the one he's playing next Saturday.
