Tressel is 'master motivator'

Seventh-year coach showed players a boxing match with a Buckeye faithful for game prep.

To get his players ready for a showdown Saturday night, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel had them learn about a Penn State mauling and watch a Buckeye fan do a little brawling.
Former OSU quarterback Bobby Hoying gave a first-hand account of the Nittany Lions' 63-14 victory in 1994, warning the current team to brace for a constant din in Beaver Stadium.

Tressel also showed a snippet of boxer Kelly Pavlic's grueling middleweight fight against champion Jermain Taylor last month. Pavlic, a Youngstown native, entered the ring in a scarlet sweatshirt and wore gray trunks adorned with an OSU block "O" during his seven-round TKO.

Tressel?s motivational tool box well stocked

[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]COLUMBUS ? For Ohio State senior co-captain Kirk Barton there was no doubt.
There was no doubt the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes were ready to play in a 37-17 win over Penn State on Saturday night. And there was no doubt coach Jim Tressel will come up with some interesting motivational tactics with Wisconsin coming to Ohio Stadium this Saturday.
?Tress is the master motivator,? Barton said on Saturday night, as he described some of the things Tressel did to prepare the team for its trip to Penn State.
Those motivational tools included watching tapes of middleweight champion fighter Kelly Pavlik, of Youngstown, which is a weekly occurrence, and bringing in former quarterback Bob Hoying to talk about one of the most one-sided losses in OSU history, a 63-14 defeat at Penn State in 1994.
?He finds new things for us to watch every week,? Barton said. ?I don?t ask questions when it works.?

As posted in PSU game thread:

JT: 71-14
Petey: 71-14

The battle is on....

Only six coaches in D1A have averaged 10 wins a season since 2001.

Mack Brown ...... 73-13 ...... .849
Jim Tressel ....... 71-14 ...... .835
Pete Carroll ....... 71-14 ...... .835
Bob Stoops ....... 73-15 ...... .830
Urban Meyer ...... 66-15 ...... .815
Mark Richt ........ 67-19 ...... .779

Mack Brown (Vince Young) went through Tressel, Carroll, and Stoops all in the same season to get to the top of the list.

Technically, Bob Stoops' record should be 65-11 since the '05 season is wiped out of the record books.

That is something I never noticed regarding Mack Brown and that '05 Texas season. When you think about it, it's pretty damn impressive. Whether or not it was solely due to VY, and we all know that it was, to knock down your top 3 competitors all in one fare swoop says alot. 2 of the 3 don't come around very often, and he had the last laugh for about a year with JT. Carroll won't get another shot at UT anytime soon unless the manipulators, er I mean Bowl Committes, feel like it's their unspoken duty to provide a rematch. Oddly enough, PC and MB might both settle in with around 3 or 4 losses, presenting the bowl matchup. Only, this time played in December, not January. :slappy:

True, though doing so would disqualify him from the list based on the 10-win season criteria, as well as start a ridiculous argument over the validity of Stassen's data vs what appears in the official Oklahoma media guide. :wink2:

If Nick Saban doesn't leave for a cup of coffee with the NFL, he would certainly be on this list, while Larry Coker also would have qualified with 60 wins in 6 years on the strength of the '01-'03 seasons. With those two added, the list would include all the National Championship winning coaches since 2000, plus Mark Richt (though recent FSU and Georgia performances post-2000 suggest he was clearly the brains of that '99 FSU title squad. He does have a championship ring as an assistant with the 'Noles).

JT has always said his philosophy is 'if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.' Since he's been head coach, OSU has scheduled Texas and Southern Cal. Gene Smith has made mention this season of trying to schedule Georgia, while Andy Geiger had tried hammering out an agreement with Oklahoma back in '03-'04.

The Holiday Bowl is a fun bowl to go to. I had front row seats in 2005 on the 50 yard line. It was a close game (17-14 Oklahoma), and was just a straight up fun experience. The fly over was awesome. It was cool to be right there at the level of the action.

I'd watch USC vs. Texas in the Holiday Bowl, easily. It wouldn't surprise me if they both ended up in this bowl game.

I just wanted to mention about Tressel that this past saturday, I seen a whole new look in his eyes. I have never seen him look like he is in such control. From kickoff i knew that we would win the game, I believe that he was probably hurt more than anyone of us know about what happened in the dessert about a year ago, he is coaching his ass off this year and I commend him for it. He wants revenge and he's taking it out on anyone who is an opposition.

vince young didn't stop ryan hamby from catching a probable game winning td. didn't force tOSU to settle for 3 field goals 3 times after turnovers gave us the ball inside the texas 40.

vy played his part that night, but the texas d won that game. he may have thrown the final td in the final seconds. but if their d gives up 21 instead of 9 that is nothing more than a garbage time td to keep things from looking as bad as they really were. they had a great team that year.

as far as tressel is concerned. he impresses me more every single year. it really seems to me that not only does he shape his offense to match the players. but he seems to be getting more aggressive as time goes on. im not sure if he is getting more comfortable with his job and no longer afraid of being fired if he looses. or if it is taking him time to adjust from D1 AA athletes and schemes to D1 A. or it could simply be that the things he wanted to do simply weren't possible until he was able to work in his recruits. but i have been very happily impressed by the way he is managing this season and as well as seasons past. you always see players develop over 3 - 5 years. its not as common to watch a coach/coaching staff do the same.
