Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

there have been so many misconceptions about tressel, on both ends of the spectrum.

some people think that his teams never make mistakes, and are so disciplined, etc. etc. (even though this particular team fumbled about one million times)

other people think he's an old-fashioned conversative that runs up the middle every play, and is incapable of "opening up" the offense, blah blah blah.

he's been here 5 years now, and I think that my conclusion, after watching him coach so many games, is this:

- the one single truth about Tressel is that his offenses always seem to perform better, be more advanced and in-sync, at the end of the year compared to the beginning of the year. I am against a playoff system, but if they ever created one I would be able to get over it because the Buckeyes would excel in such a system.

Tressel is not perfect. He has his flaws. But at the end of the year, I'm taking him over any other coach out there. And there are a few that I think are great coaches.

Keep in mind, however, that he's only been here 5 years. It will be interesting to see how his offense performs after Troy Smith. If not for #10, Tress could be 2-3 against Michigan, and at least half of the fanbase would be calling for his head. The more his offense continues to succeed at the end of the season, with different players entering the mix every few years, the more I'll be convinced of his greatness as a coach.

Smith is his player (and taken when we already had our savior in Zwick in the 02 class), so I'm not sure how you can take anything away from Tressel b/c TS has developed so well. Also, he stuck by him with tons of people berating Troy, especially early in 05 when Zwick looked pretty solid.

I was thinking the same thing. How gutsy to bench a 5-star reruit to go with an unheralded prospect, not all college coaches would have done it.

I respect your opinion, but give credit where credit is due. JT has been here just 5 years and won 2 Big Ten Championships, 1 National Championship and is 4-1 against Michigan and 4-1 in Bowl games. If not for JT, Troy Smith would not be a member of this team. He is a great coach, 5 national championships are enough for me.

I remember the day he was hired. I was stationed in the UK at the time and my good buddy was a fellow Buckeye fan from Massillon. Everybody was asking who this Jim Tressel was that tOSU had hired. We knew of his track record at YSU and just told everybody "don't worry, he's going to do BIG things at Ohio State".

I still cringe when I hear the "conservative" label used to describe Tress. You don't run a fake field goal in the NC game if you are conservative. You don't run a spread offense if you are "conservative".Many more examples of not being conservative. And finally,Tress won with HIS recruits. So sick of hearing the "won with Coopers recruits" nonsense. If you don't think Tress has "re"established the respect for OSU,look at the polls.Great job and a great season. Thanks Tress! Go Bucks

It will be interesting to see how his offense performs after Troy Smith.

Seeing that he went 25-2 between 2002-2003 without Troy Smith, I think he will find a way to win. He might have another 8-4 or 7-5 season here of there, but he could also have another 25-2 run with the right players.

The great thing about college football is that you get an entire new team in every few years. Every year you wonder how well the offense (or defense) will perform without this player or that player.

January 4, 2006 at 4:44pm ET Plenty of people have given a lot of credit to OSU's players for the win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, but there hasn't been as much given to the coaching performance of the OSU staff. Jerry Rudzinski gives a thumbs-up to both the players and coaches in his latest Captain's Corner. What a beautiful victory over the Irish! Sure, OSU had some chances to open the score up a little more, but we will take 14-point victories against a recruiting competitor all day long.
The thing that jumped out the most is the coaching. Ohio State looked very well coached. The assignment football on defense made for a long day for the Fighting Irish. If you have the flat, cover the flat regardless of what is going on elsewhere. If you have the B gap, stuff the B gap regardless if a guard or tackle comes down on you. The schemes, X's, and O's don't matter as much when the assignments are buttoned up. We showed discipline on both sides of the ball. Yeah, OSU's athletes looked faster and more electrifying, but the players took care of their responsibilities. Jim Tressel's consistent approach and message goes further than a thick playbook. With that said though, the blitz packages, play calling and adjustments looked awfully sharp to me. Those five National Championship rings prove Tressel can get it done.

</NOSCRIPT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The five-year run has been incredible. We can credit so much of this five-year success on those Michigan victories. What is the mindset in 2001 if the Buckeyes don't finish with the Ann Arbor victory? The National Championship doesn't happen unless Will Allen steps in front of the Michigan pass at the goal line. OSU's 8-4 with an Alamo Bowl victory isn't 8-4 with an Alamo Bowl victory if they don't beat Michigan in the Horseshoe. As for 2005, the BCS is not a reality if we don't witness the Troy Smith show in our regular season finale. It goes deeper than "The Big Ten Title goes through the OSU-Michigan game." The truth is, "A successful season goes through the OSU-Michigan game."
