Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

Alright what is the first thing you think when you hear "St. Louis Cardinals". Baseball right? But now that I think of it I do remember reading about that team.

Just as a warning ,the SF Giants used to be in New York... so that might trip you up down the road as well. :wink2:

Well even if I were young pup like yourself, I MIGHT suspect that there was something different going on when Bud's name was attached to a St. Louis Cardinals team.

For instant history on every team I recommend this site - its a good read and you will end up being better informed.

Actually, since I liked pro football better than I did pro baseball, if I hear "St. Louis Cardinals", the old football team pops in my head, just like when I hear "the Rams" I think of the Los Angeles Rams.

Not to bring down the mood on this thread, bu we would do well to remember a coach(who shall remain nameless) out at USC who is on pace to win his 3rd National Title in a row, and has his team on a ridiculous winning streak. Not to mention a stocked cupboard.

I'm full-on-board the Tressel bandwagon, but he's not the only coach right now making major waves over his first 5 years in a program.

This bugs the shit out of me when I hear that USC is going to 3Pete.
FUCKING LSU WON IN 2003. NOT USC.
THE BSC was set up to settle all this shared champion bullshit. Just because one poll chose to separate themselves doesn't mean they decide the championship over the BCS.
And Texas is going to kick the shit out of US(with no fucking defense)C

Jax: "4. John F Cooper 111-43-4 (.715)"

Coop's middle name is really F?? Is Bucky Dent's middle name really F too? What a coincidence ..

sandgk: "He is one of the very few Head Coaches who stands a better than theoretical chance of doing ALL the good things outlined in this thread."

I'd like to think so, but National Championships are very elusive, especially in real conferences. I don't know if you can expect Tress to win another one (we certainly can hope), but either way, he'll probably retire as the 2nd best Buckeye coach in history.

Look at how far apart National Championships are for the major programs in CFB. This excludes Miami, who played in no conference, then the Big Least, and got to play their National Title games at home, Nebraska, who hasn't won one since the Big 8 got other teams with pulses & became the Big 12, and USC, who of course plays in the "Wack" 10:

- Oklahoma, one National Championship in the last 19 seasons.
- Florida State, one undefeated season. Period.
- Florida, no undefeated seasons & one National Title thanks to the "do-over" Bowl.
-scUM, one split NT in 50+ seasons.
- LSU, one split NT since 1958.
- Tennessee, one Title since 1951 (and a whole lotta Citrus Bowls in-between - can't spell 'Citrus' without U.T.)
- Notre Dame, one NT in the last 27 seasons.
- 'Bama, once NT in the last 25 seasons.
- Penn State, one NT in 18 seasons. Even ran the table once in that span & got shafted.

My point in all this? Even the best programs go very long stretches with no hardware.

My commander during my last couple years in the Air Force was an '84 Buckeye grad, and when Tressel was hired I told him that Tressel will win 3-4 national titles during his career here if he coached for 20 years. There's no doubt in my mind he'll get us a couple more titles before he hungs it all up.

Well, on a board talking about football, when I see the St. Louis Cardinals I think of the NFL team. Of course, I still call the Redskins the Boston Braves and the Lions the Portsmouth Steamrollers...so perhaps I'm not the best person to reference.

Deacon Jones, Maxie Baughn, Roman Gabriel, never heard of them. Ok, well, er, Mili is right. That's exactly how I remember it. Of course, back in those days we walked through 6 feet of snow to get to school, and we couldn't afford shoes, so we wrapped our feet in newspapers, and....

No, the BCS was not set up to settle 'all this shared champion bullshit,' it was set up to match the top two teams in the country on the field; everyone knew going in that there would be problems if there were three or four really, really good teams, and that we could still see split championships in the event that the number two and three teams in the country were very, very close.

LSU may have won the designated BCS championship game for 2003, but USC won their bowl game too and was crowned with the AP title, so accept this and move on. If you are going to deny USC their AP national championship in 2003, then by the same measure you're denying Ohio State their AP national championships in 1942 and 1954. If not having a consensus champion invalidates a national title, then you'd have to negate Ohio State's 1957, 1961 and 1970 titles too.

I think you need to get a better grasp on what the definition of the word 'poll' is. USC has a trophy in their trophy case from the AP, so accept it: USC were national champions in 2003 too.
