No one really knows how bad it will be, but 8/12 is a long time to swing in the wind.:(

Depends on who you ask. If you ask someone who was stupid enough to think Ohio State would never get a letter of inquiry from the NCAA, for example, today's breaking news that Ohio State got such a letter sounds like a big fucking deal.

Meh... I don't mean to minimize the allegations contained in the letter... but... sheesh... the only "news" here is that it came... the rest of it is pretty old stuff, in my opinion. That is to say, there's already been plenty of speculation about "lying" to the NCAA, etc..

I don't know... seems to me that a lot of folks operate in a vacuum.

Lack of institutional control deemed by the NCAA is about as bad as it gets without recruits getting cars and houses. You never want to hear this phrase from the NCAA. That's like saying a parent has lost control of the house. Those expecting things to be light better brace themselves.

Yep.

It was painful listening to the Common Idiot and the ReTorg this afternoon as the ReTorg was cheerleading the "fire him now" chorus, but there really isn't anything new here at all other than the letter was finally sent.

You have it wrong BG13. The NCAA is not accusing tOSu of LOIC....thank God. That takes the worst stuff off the table. While "good news" seems like a poor way to put it, it is a relief to know that the NCAA are not thinking that way.

no offense, but there was at least a confirmation of what some of us said all along but several vehemently denied......Jim Tressel lied to the NCAA in a fashion similar to a systematic cover-up. It wasn't a vast OSU conspiracy....or even small OSU conspiracy as far as the NCAA knows from its investigation thus far. It was complete disregard for the rules that started and ended with JT.

I treat this as very good news because had it grown beyond JT to others within the department than it would have been a conspiracy and resulted in LOIC.

Up until now, I haven't vented much at the Tat5 (yeah, some of you hate that term, but tough [Mark May]), but had they not been so fucking self-centered we'd all be giddy with excitement for a very possible national title run this season. They just couldn't keep clean, play one more season, and then get their big NFL paycheck. They had to put a couple grand in their pocket and some extra ink on their arms. They never should've even put their coach and father-figure in that position in the first place...

I totally agree.

I vented early on about all of this and have now calmed down about it. There are a few reasons why.

The news today that we are not being hit with LOIC AND/OR FTM is huge. Its one of the reasons Tressel looked so calm Saturday IMO. Gene Smith knows as well as Tress that the worst is over. We may get slapped with some minor stuff but the big stuff was avoided. THIS IS THE BEST NEWS OF THE OFFSEASON.

Whoever takes over for Tressel is taking over a stockpiled program. Tressel will go out with dignity and will be allowed to resign if it comes to that. It is not like Hoke taking over for RR. There will be no rebuilding FOR THE NEXT COACH.

IMO after seeing Tressel Saturday I feel better about the situation. This is the first time since thr press conference that Tress has looked this confident and relaxed. I think he could walk away after this season and be happy. He rebuilt our program and will leave it on an upswing. He dominated his rival like no other. He is the Michigan killer. Woody is somewhere smilin.

Tressel had less than 5 years left anyways from what I have heard. His legacy might be tainted outside of the Buckeye family but inside of it we all know what he did for OSU. Fuck everyone else and their opinions. JT single handedly destroyed Michigan football and it was beautiful to watch. He will leave a blueprint for all future Buckeye coaches to follow. Michigan still has a 3-4 year rebuilding project left.

All in all its great to be a Buckeye...

I don't think anyone really thought the NCAA wouldn't send a letter in this vein, at least not on BP.

That said, only the dimmest of idiots outside of the OSU fanbase really truly believe the conspiracy part of this story. Yes that includes the braintrusts at eSPIN. This seems to be pretty clearly a coach who didn't follow the correct procedures and will now take the punishment for it.

I'd think, however, if Gee and/or Smith thought this fiasco was going to seriously cost Ohio State more than some games for the players (via the denied appeal) and a show-cause or some type of program restrictions they would have allowed Tressel to resign as he proposed to do back whenever this crap started. I don't know if that truly means anything anymore. I also don't think Smith has put any distance between himself and Tressel in this entire process which may also mean something too. It is usually pretty obvious when the AD is not even answering the phone for the coach anymore. I haven't seen any indication that is happening here yet.

The only real question is how often will eSPIN feel the need to fan the flames between now and August 12th? I'd guess we'll see this story mentioned at least once a week (and probably more) after July 4th.

Nothing like proving your character by taking responsibility, albeit belatedly, and taking your medicine. It's something I'm trying to instill in my daughter and it's something JT is going to have to do now.

Understand the need to vent and all, but the actions the "Tat5" were suspended for took place 18-24 months ago. And as poor judgement as it was, it doesn't excuse Tressel's reaction to it. He is the adult, the leader, the figurehead. He needs to make to right decisions at even a higher standard than the 18-19 year old kids.

That said the public and the NCAA are nuts if they don't think almost every major BCS college campus doesn't have a network of pawn shops, tattoo parlors, bars, auto dealerships, clothes stores, we*d dealers, etc. that all cater to and give extra benefits/credits to college football and basketball players that are not extended to the general campus at large. At most schools(including tOSU) these networks are not explicitly set up by anyone involved with the coaching staffs or athletic departments, but anyone who's been around BCS level school knows this is a truth, including any of the other college coaches and presidents who may pile on tOSU/Tressel in the coming weeks.

None of the above is meant to excuse/justify Tressel's reaction.

edit: Also, Mililani, the bulk of my post is not aimed at you, as I know you're about as knowledgeable a BUckeye fan as their gets around here. Don't hurt me

From this article, there is the following quote that I find is significant.
The allegation that Tressel lied to the NCAA is significant. Since 2006, the NCAA has sanctioned 28 schools for violating the ethics bylaw that Tressel did. Of the 13 head coaches involved, only one kept her job. The others either resigned or were fired by their schools.

A-freakin'-men! Tressel has disappointed me, but these guys piss me off.

Keep in mind, Bruce Pearl was fired for losing 8 of his last 10 games. If Tennesse makes a run to the elite 8, he is not fired. A lot of those other coaches are from lesser programs where it is easier to just cut ties to avoid punishment.
