Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

They were having some success with gap schemes in The Game but still kept going back to outside zone. Almost threw the remote at the TV. Glad I didn’t because we won it all. The counters and power (incl QB power) in the playoffs definitely resulted in some hard-ons lasting longer than 4 hours.
they probably went back to zone in The Game because they thought martindale would get blitz happy if he saw the OL always running gap schemes.

chess match.

personally I think a lot of the TCUN game plan was in that vein - the smart guys outsmarting themselves and thinking it all into a box they couldn't escape for whatever reason.

Probably, and I’m of the philosophy that they should just keep running it until it stops working. That game is such a blur and I don’t know if they did force OSU back to zone, but I think we can all agree that the patchwork (at the time) OL wasn’t executing their base runs very well albeit against arguably the best interior DL they faced all season.

Add in the wind, the missed FGs, Will possibly not being 100% and the defense playing well, it felt like they just turtled up a little too much and lost the game.

Hindsight is always 20/20 I guess. Oh well.

Here is the thing I can't get past:

Knowles is an older guy. That means he grew up in a world of "get it done or you are fucking fired" as pretty much just any old Tuesday at work.

I mean no one of my age cohort or older could get that bitter about being yelled at and having their job threatened. It's just not a pulse raiser in the long term. He's a Philly guy for fucks sake. He can't be that much of a pussy.

Something else had to have happened.

the more i think about this past season the more perplexed i become.

which defense - before oregon or after oregon (BO / AO) - was the real knowles defense?

cuz the way i now understand it, it was ryan day who told knowles he needs to make changes after the oregon performance. and this was the red line that was crossed and got knowles’ panties in a bunch because he got over-ridden in favor of LJSr and was proven wrong?

or was the post-oregon defense knowles’ defense, after day stepped in, and knowles pulled a “see, i told you… i’m outta here bitches” thing?

Watching Oregon 1 again, I don't see how Day wasn't irate about our corners being burned for big plays. They definitely changed up the back end by the Rose Bowl.

Knowles might have gotten more say over the DL calls afterwards, but I think he also got chewed out for big plays again. Honestly, I don't know if we ever saw what Knowles wanted to run.

But watch some Rose Bowl clips again. It's all coverage sacks. The D-line was getting home because the secondary was playing so well.
