Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

2). I'm not certain why PSU would do this? Other than to potentially wound a conference rival?
Was anybody disappointed in Penn States defense over the past 2-3 years? Did they massively under develop talent? All I see are NFL teams running to the podium to draft these dudes and for good reason. I'm not certain this was ever a deficiency in the PSU program.

Joesus worked in mysterious ways.

His cult is even mysterier

the more i think about this past season the more perplexed i become.

which defense - before oregon or after oregon (BO / AO) - was the real knowles defense?

cuz the way i now understand it, it was ryan day who told knowles he needs to make changes after the oregon performance. and this was the red line that was crossed and got knowles’ panties in a bunch because he got over-ridden in favor of LJSr and was proven wrong?

or was the post-oregon defense knowles’ defense, after day stepped in, and knowles pulled a “see, i told you… i’m outta here bitches” thing?

I tend to lean towards option 1 - I DO think what happened is Day told LJ Sr and Knowles to work more closely together rather than giving Knowles final authority and that's what broke the camel's back.

This season was so bipolar that we can do this same exercise with three or four position groups and all of the coaches in general.

OL-how do you go from that to that? It's not like the two guys on the right side got any better in the 3 weeks after The Game. Was it Kelly finally waking up to how to use scheme to mask their weaknesses? If so, where exactly in the fuck was that all year?

So on and so on and so on. Just such a crazy year. That said, I vote we discuss this somewhere in the Buckeye football forum and relegate this one to the dust bin of former hired guns.

so, we got a natty because LJSr basically got his way… EDIT: and not because the mad scientist got the chance to keep tinkering away.

hence ryan day making a big deal during the celebration that LJSr has been around for TWO natties. meaning… don’t mess with the guy because he’s the only one in this program who’s been here before.

good idea… if we can get any of those elitist prick mods to move this to another thread (2024 defense / offense discussion)?

cuz i’d sure love to hear more on those topics.

on the OL topic, though, i think that what changed everything was when frye was forced to rotate guys, with good results, owing to the fact that he couldn’t string together fulltime starters using the glitchy guys he had on the bench.

EDIT: i think what also helped the OL was the willingness to let howard take off and run much more in the second half of the season and particularly during the playoffs, among other things, to take pressure off the OL when a play was taking too long to develop.

I'm not even sure I'd say LJ Sr got his way. I'd say Ryan Day got his way ultimately.

But I can see why a DC would leave after being told to work with what is essentially a subordinate more closely to "fix" his defense.

I can answer that one immediately.

They went to a gap scheme instead of the zone blocking stuff that is hit or miss. Gap blocking is more resistant to overly-stacked fronts and doesn't require as much coordination between players like zone blocking can. It goes deeper than that but that was a HUGE part of it and one I truly hope they keep around.

Me too, I just can't see why anyone would pay that person 3 million dollars per year.

Like is anyone else like "Oh, yeah, this guy and Big Game James will totally come up with the right answers together!"

They were having some success with gap schemes in The Game but still kept going back to outside zone. Almost threw the remote at the TV. Glad I didn’t because we won it all. The counters and power (incl QB power) in the playoffs definitely resulted in some hard-ons lasting longer than 4 hours.
